Rob Marshall To Direct Pirates Of The Caribbean 4

I’ve got to admit I did not see this one coming. We’ve all known for some time that there was going to be a Pirates of the Caribbean 4. The only reason I’m not completely against this idea is because I’m holding out some hope that a 4th film will redeem the awful mess the last 2 films were and return the franchise to the brilliance of the original.

Now it appears they’ve hired a new director… and it’s a choice that just might do it! It’s been announced that director Rob Marshall will take over for Gore Verbinski and helm the next Pirates movie.

This is a very interesting choice. Marshall isn’t known for his comedy or action. His films win Oscars (Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha) and his next film coming out, “Nine” (not to be confused with the animated film called “9” coming soon) will undoubtedly win some Oscars too considering that’s what Marshall does, and that Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Kate Hudson and Dame Judi Dench are all in it.

So can Marshall do adventure? I simply don’t know. But what we DO know is that he’s a fantastic director, and that can do nothing but help the franchise.

So what do you think? Does this announcement increase, decrease or not change at all your excitement level for Pirates of the Caribbean 4?

  1. I want everybody back in another awesome adventure. I hear Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly refuse to be in another film and that takes most of the magic out of everything. Now all there will be is action and no love.

  2. As I stated earlier, a new cast would perfect. My choices would be:
    Johnny Depp
    Taylor Kitsch
    Moon Bloodgood
    Anne Hathaway[okay, i’m kidding]
    Sara Foster.

  3. As I stated earlier, a new cast would perfect. My choices would be:
    Johnny Depp
    Taylor Kitsch
    Moon Bloodgood
    Anne Hathaway[a’right, may be not]
    Sara Foster.

  4. Yes! – Bring it! We are eagerly awaiting Pirates Of The Caribbean 4, with great anticipation. World’s End left us with an unresolved ending. We hope that the plot in Pirates Of The Caribbean 4 will be more like Curse Of The Black Pearl in that it will at least be coherrent and more in keeping with what Mr. Walt Disney might have envisioned. Please…keep to the code.

  5. Ok, I actually still liked POTC 2 & 3 (except for the dragged out maelstrom scene, which was **BRUCKHEIMER’S** doing, not the director (Verbinski). And if the film was THAT bad, why’d it make so much money at the theaters AND in DVD sales?

Yes, leave Will Turner out (already done as Bloom has declined to return since his character’s arc is pretty well wrapped up). Leave Knightley out. Bring back Rush and Depp, naturally, and as many of the supporting pirate ship crew members as possible because those characters made the films what they were. As for who directs, that won’t matter one little bit unless the scriptwriters give him good material to work with. Depp said he wouldn’t do it again with Ted Elliot & Terry Rossio continuing to write his character, so I assume they’ve been booked for the job. That’s a step in the right direction. Step 2 is to bring them to filming (just like on the 1st one) so they can add to and trim away from the script as needed and make it all work as beautifully as the first time.

And just to remind people, there WAS action in both “Chicago” and “Memoirs of a Geisha,” both Oscar-nommed films directed by Marshall. He can do this.

And dammit, give Depp his Oscar this time for Sparrow!! He got nommed the 1st time but didn’t win, and he has gotten the nod from Oscar since, even though the character has only become more 3-dimensional, deeper, and funnier as he went on. It’s time Oscar joined the rest of the award shows in recognizing Depp’s talents.

    IMHO.

  6. I don’t need no oscar for Pirates franchise. And I don’t need no Orlando Bloom shit[and Keira Knighteley]. All I want is a new cast[including Johnny Depp] and a great story with great action like the first film. So, I don’t think Rob Marshall is not the right man for the job.But miracle happens, right.

  7. anything is great without Bloom..
they need to bring in actors that can really act infront of Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush and all the other good cast in pirates, and stick to the first Pirate movie style. i hope they bring in Leonardo DiCaprio in the 4th pirates, that be interesting :)

  8. Make it fun, make it tight, take your time with the script, lose most of the characters, have Sparrow, Barbossa and some awesome new bad guy chasing each other in ships for an awesome treasure.

It’s not complicated, it’s hard to screw up.

In fact make James Woods the new villain. James Woods as an evil pirate captain; who’s with me?

  9. Remember that time when Hollywood beat a franchise into the ground by not knowing when to quit? Oh wait, that’s every franchise. Yeah, I expect nothing from this 4th movie. As much fun (not to say that it was good) as the 2nd movie was, the whole thing got pretty stale by “At world’s end”. I’m done with this swash-buckling adventure. I think the studio is better off putting the money into a ‘Sinbad’ movie or something. You know, switch it up a bit.

  10. Well, Chris Nolan wasn’t known for action either but look what he did for Batman. If its a great director I’ll give him a chance to see what he’ll give. One of the reasons I have hopes for Pirates 4 is that I think they’ll actually have the script done when they start filming unlike 2 and 3 which they were still writing while were in production.

  11. I know better than to hold out much hope for any film being any good these days. I’ve been let down too many times. When something is great, I’ll be pleasantly surprised. Otherwise, I’m just assuming that everything is going to suck, it’s the safe bet. Especially when it comes to a 4th Pirates film. The last 2 were utterly horrible.

  12. We shall see. Any confirmed casting? I heard Depp is still just considering and Bloom might not at all?

Cpt. Jack is the ONLY GOOD THING about the second and third movies. And even then he got dragged into a HORRID plot with Elizabeth where they could possibly be romantically attracted to one another. Please. Cpt. Jack is NOT the love interest in these things. I would be happy to just have him back and let the other two stay busy with something else (and out of the picture)

As for the director, it will be impossible to tell until we know the plot. I agree with Adrian that these should not be made into Oscar worthy movies. First of all, how could they? The academy would never lower itself to ever nominate it for anything other than special effects. Snobs.

Just bring back a swash buckling tale with JACK (leave out the other two) and it should be great… anything would be better than the third film.

    1. Bloom needs to stay out of this.

Though I don’t see this happening, do not forget that Return of the King prevailed at the Oscars, including Best Picture.

  13. I think that, considering that while I did not hate 2 and 3, the series is in need of a change. I don’t know if Rob Marshall is the man to do it. At least it isn’t Brett Ratner or Michael Bay. I would love to see it done by someone like James Cameron, Ridley Scott, or John Campea.

  14. I don’t want Oscars from Pirates of the…
I want the fantastic action from the first one, with the brilliant story telling and great visuals.

And i want the Jack from the first Pirates as well.
