Wolverine’s Deadpool Concept Art Revealed

Phillip Boutte’s concept art for the look of some of the characters from X-Men Origins: Wolverine gives us a peek at what the characters were originally going to look like. Just a reminder, that this is from the movie that just came out, not the Deadpool movie they are apparently working on right now.

Now, I like what they were doing with Wade Wilson, hinting at the original mask pattern from the comics, but in the movie I liked that he was just a regular looking guy BEFORE he was Deadpool. I loved everything about Reynold’s Wade Wilson, but not “Deadpool”.

Heck, I didn’t even care about the Weapon XI character, and I think that they even called him Deadpool or implied that it was Wade in the first place was my issue. (this is hinted never confirmed – its not even Reynolds in the XI digs)

On the drive home from the theater, all John and I talked about was how they would “fix” this to allow for a good Deadpool movie, and from all accounts so far they are going to go with a closer adaptation to the Deadpool everyone wishes we saw.

What do you think of the concept art?

  1. i like the concept art it could use more bumps, a measles rash kinda look so its not so kruger-ish or vorhees- ish. just a bad skin infection that came from logan’s healing factor warring against wades cancer ( why he did this in the 1st place) like poisen ivy and a bad breakout of hives and veins. spawns skin look burn, but decayed too. that attn to detail should portray on wade as well but not on just the suit, but correct it to deadpool mythos. acne vs bad mutation sculp it and add that to cgi this will save money fir clise ups use the latex fold for realism, like the thingvin the ff4 flix…. thatbkevel of texture will make up for wolverine fuckup. i remember seeing ryan at the 1st trailer … i got hype but got worried… are they ganna fuck this up? they gotta make it right

  2. I also loved Ryan Renolds portrayal of Wade Wilson. I wasn’t too happy with the way they made deadpool. Though Ryan Renolds shared the role with another actor Scott Adkins who was in such movies as The Bourne Ultimatum. Anyways, i thought they did a great job making the character of deadpool look pretty creepy and intense but adding all those powers to him and changing the characters abilities wasn’t good, they didn’t stay true to the character and i hate when movies do that.

  3. i’m was wondering how they will do deadpool’s mask. in the comics, it’s easy to show a lot of emotions through his mask. in the movies, it’s tougher to see the expressions and you would lose a lot of deadpool’s personality. plus, will the director want to ‘waste’ having Ryan Reynolds as an actor by having him just do a voice-over?

hmm… the more i think about it, the more i like having an animatronic mask for deadpool and letting Reynolds do voice-over. you could probably save money in actor salary that way.

    1. “will the director want to ‘waste’ having Ryan Reynolds as an actor by having him just do a voice-over?”

Obviously youve never seen a movie by DreamWorks Animations

    2. that’s a retarded comment. of course I have, and that’s why I put ‘waste’ in quotes and said IN THE SAME POST that it would be good to do a voiceover.

    3. I was joking John lol

Sorry if that seemed like I was being a dick to you. Sarcasm.

I just dont like how Dreamworks wastes money on big actors do do their voices and then has them look EXACTLY like the actor doing the voice

And yes, it would be a waste to use Reynolds for the voice alone, but again, Dreamworks does it all the time

How many lines did the Furious Five have in Kung Fu Panda? And have you seen that cast? Its ridiculous!

    4. lol that’s funny – duh, i’m usually pretty good at detecting sarcasm. that is true – good thing they got one of the greatest legends in kung fu history for those crucial lines.

      “Or even see them.”
      “He’s too fast!”

  4. Deadpool isn’t a ghoul. In this concept art they make him look like some sort of undead creature- I don’t understand whats so hard about getting it right? Spawn’s disfigurement in the Spawn movie was dead on and that was like 10 years ago.

    1. Go watch the movie Brendan. This is very similar to how he turned out in the film.

The illustrations look like a guy who had many surgeries done to him to imbue him with a multitude of genetic powers.

Which is what he was in the film.

    2. I’ve seen the movie rodney. In the concept are there differences that make him seem a little more ‘ghouly’ and just because I’m saying he looked like this is the concept art doesn’t mean I don’t have the same complaint in the movie.

In the concept art he has claws, not fingers- his neck musculature is much more exaggerated, and his torso is nowhere near that disfigured and exaggerated in the movie. Would you like me to keep going?

    3. You can split hairs about all the differences you see, but this art is based on the description that the writer put forth for Weapon XI.

A guy with fresh surgery scars who will be altered to have his mouth stitch over, be muscular but slender. If I was given the task to draw what they described it would look like that too.

This is concept art. Its not supposed to be exactly like the end. But clearly you can see where they went from here.

    4. Your problem is in how your comparing CONCEPT art to the finished product of another movie. They could have fifty iterations of Deadpool drawn out where they all look radically different from each other. The final product rarely looks identical to any one piece of concept art. I bet if you looked at the concept art for Spawn ten years ago the finished product would probably have some differences from the concept art they designed him by, and I would also bet they would have had several iterations of how they wanted him to look drawn up in the concept art.

Concept art is not about getting it right. Its about presenting a vision that can be used in creating the final product.

    5. Difference here is I’m arguing a point whereas you guys are arguing semantics.

The fact is they screwed the pooch on deadpool- either representation, whether in concept art or the actual way he looked in the film are both wrong. They have over 15 years of concept art- the comics. There’s no reason why the character (both in story and visuals) should be so off center.

      1. They screwed the pooch on calling Weapon XI Deadpool. If they had simply left Wade’s “death” as a mystery it could be explained in the Deadpool movie. Instead they imply that Wade IS Weapon XI (I am pretending it wasn’t) instead of just saying a different mutant was imbued with their combined powers.

        1. I agree with you on that. They could play it off that it wasn’t Wade that Logan and Creed were fighting in the end. He never did say that he was Wade afterall (also his lips were sewn shut so that could be the reason why, but I won’t go with that logic). As far as the designs go, not really digging that hood thing they have on him. I think if they gave him the full mask on and in the movie have him put in on and joke around about it then that would be cool. You can see Wade put on the mask and ask “What do you think ladies? Does it match my sense of awesomeness?” with Logan mumbling something under breath about a cheap superhero costume of sort.

        2. Deadpool cant be Deadpool until he goes through the short stage of his life in which hes “Weapon X Deadpool”
Its because of failing at weapon x that he gets sent to the Workshop and then to the Deadpool.
Weapon X Deadpool and the Deadpool you all know are completely different.

Its after he does a mission with Sluggo, Slayback, and Kane who are all succesful wqeapon x candidates, that he goes to the Workshop because he was the only failure hence his disfiguration and psychotic behavior.

So he WASHES OUT of weapon x (hes weapon x deadpool still)
And THEN the game called “The Deadpool” starts, which has nothing to do with Wade
The game is to bet on who dies next in the workshop
The Workshop was painful and he was being tortured, so he became more insane and saw visions of death and fell in love with her, so he put a bet on the Deadpool on himself and tried anything he could do to die and meet death, who was “his love”
So he starts killing people, becoming more insane, then he starts becoming more humorous making fun of people with sick jokes, and then he snaps completely and is sentenced to death, his healing factor finally becomes perfect and he escapes and becomes a mercenary again

THAT is when he starts calling himself Deadpool, he adopted the name from the sick game his Workshop partners used, who he mostly killed

As weapon x deadpool, he always looked different then the deathstroke/spiderman copy cat uniformed ninja, he wore a black and white uniform that was completely different

Were not even CLOSE to meeting the real deadpool yet. The weapon x deadpool was a pretty close adaptation of the weapon x deadpool- disfigured, gross, and controlled by the program.

Hes not even in the fucking workshop yet, itll take them a whole movie to make him deadpool

          1. So my point is, how is he going to be deadpool, if hes not even in the workshop yet?

Youre all complaining about him not looking like deadpool, no he doesnt, because he hasnt even come to that stage of his life yet, hes 3 years away from becoming deadpool.

Now that hes been proven to be a weapon x failure theyll send him to the workshop and then the sick deadpool game will start.
And AFTER he escapes hell be deadpool
He doesnt even get all his powers until he gets sentenced to death which isnt even close to happening.

          2. I’m pretty sure they’re just going to over simplify it. My theory is he’s just going to recover from being wrecked by wolverine and creed and now that he has his voice back, he’ll just say “Wow that sucked, I want to kill things now” and he becomes a merc again.

          3. THANK YOU! Your summary of Deadpool’s history is spot on. I would love to see this made into a movie, especially if they focus more on the character’s transformation rather than making wacky one-liners.

The 2 biggest problems I can see for the writers is how to abandon the super power modifications from Origins and how to fit the Deadpool we all want into the much darker origin story he’s known for, because let’s face it, Wade was a pretty evil character before he decided to reform, and while that would be pretty interesting to see, it isn’t how he’s showcased in comics today.

  5. I like where they were going with the concept art for him after transformation, shame it didnt work out that way. But the pre experient Deadpool Disgusting!! The way the movie Wade Wilson turned out was better.

  6. WTF is that? That looks nothing like Deadpool’s costume. How is the hell is that a “closer adaptation”? Just another example that Fox doesnt know what there doing when it comes to comic book movies.

    1. Wade’s hood and black marks on the eyes look a LOT more like his costume than the movie one did.

However I like the movie version just fine. That was Wade before Deadpool, so it doesn’t have to look like his costume at all.

And funny that you say this is “more proof” while Fox didn’t use this design…. so clearly they knew something??
