Brian Blessed is Thor’s Odin

Kenneth Branagh had said that Thor casting news would be out at the end of last month, but what he didn’t tell us was that it would start a domino effect with a rapid fire sequence of announcements.

Now the Papa Smurf of Norse Mythology has found an actor. Brian Blessed will be booming on high as Odin.

Get the Big Picture says:

Blessed has had a solid career, no doubt, and having worked with Kenneth Branagh a couple of times, it seems natural for Blessed to be cast in the director’s Thor. Good role, too, if the word is to be believed: The guy with the planet’s biggest voice will play Odin, the Grand Poobah of Norse Gods.

Likely what will be a small role in the film, it is still an important one. To establish Thor as the son of the King of Gods, it makes sense that you would want someone with presence to play the part even if it is brief.

I am reminded of the inspiring Marlon Brando as Jor-El in Superman. That made a lasting impression even if he was only in the backstory and not much else.

That and Blessed can truly rock that beard like a God.

  1. Lord Locksley?! Is that you?! Awesome. Even for the 2 minutes he had on screen in “Robin Hood: prince of Thieves” he was absolutely marvelous.
    “God, and King Richard! YAAH!”
    Glad to have him aboard.

  2. I love that marvel is really thinking about who they cast and who directs rather than just putting something out for a quick buck.

I am worried that they may over think thor and it could be a repeat of ang lees hulk. A film reaching to be something its not.

Iron man and the incredible hulk are Honest comic book movies with no delusions of grandeur.

Kenneth brannagh and brian blessed give me pause.

  3. FLASH! AY-YAH!

Great choice. Sure he was hokey in Flash Gordon, but so was everyone.

Excellent casting so far. I’m not a Thor fan, but with a legit director and this cast, I’m thinking it might be more LOTR than…well…crap.

  4. Didn’t surprise me all that much. Blessed has worked with Branagh before on various occasions.

For the past few months I kept thinking about Blessed’s part in Much Ado About Nothing …but in the past five minutes I confess that Thor’s father is also the former Prince Vultan, leader of The Hawkmen….

I know. I know. My bad.

    1. Darren suggested this to me ages ago. I thought he was joking.

I don’t think I’m going to be able to take Blessed seriously because I never can. But I’ll still watch anything he does.

      “SQUADRON 40…..DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE”

  5. From most reports I’ve heard this should much more than Brando in Superman as a great deal of the movie is supposedly set in Asgard.

  6. Awesome casting choice, Odin needed an actor who was bigger than life to make Odin legit and I can think of no one better than this man.

Someone was really thinking when they chose Brian, well done!
