All you people need to relax, I can’t believe that there is this much attention being put towards a comic book character being re-imagined as someone of a different ethnicity. Think about that for a second, a comic book character. How many times over the years (twenty or so) have writers changed things, killed people only to bring them back, and come up with absolutely ridiculous explanations to support a story that wouldn’t sell shit if it was not for the beautiful art work that accompanied them? The fact of the matter is that comics books for the most part are totally illogical but yet some people take issue with a characters skin pigmentation…………hilarious.
im not saying SLJ isnt a good actor or anything, but he was nick fury in the ‘ultimate’ series. the movies that are in production are def the original avengers. Even Thor and Captian America movies are being slated for the next couple of years. the nick fury i remember from the original issues of the avengers is definitely a different guy from SLJ. he was a white, cigar smoking, tough guy war leader. this is supposed to be from the good ol days. personally i really cant see a black guy leading in war in those times anyway. world war 2 hero. ookkayyy there were barely any black leaders in that time and i doubt thered be mad white guys following him. 1960s and 70s, that just didnt happen. change can be okay sometimes, but wheres the original nick fury?? he was the best. so gayyy

Jesus had to be black born in Bethlehem but always white in pictures and film, Cleopatra the queen of Egypt ( thats in Africa by the way ) is always white in movies. One of the most famous Catwoman actresses was Eartha Kitt ( a black woman ). It’s good that Marvel has gone with the Ultimates version because the world needs it. Why? Because the reason it is an issue with some ignorant uneducated fools. Good role models thats why! Why do you think that Denzel or Wesley or Will always have hispanic or black girlfriends, try to think of a movie which ain’t about race where they have been white heroines with black heroes. Plus in the old marvel universe Tony Stark kept is Iron Man identity a Secret for a longer time so this was obviously the Ultimates version. Did you the idiots cry when Harvey Dent was played by Billy Dee (black) Williams? No! why? Because he wasn’t a major character, But now he has a major part in The Dark Knight what race is he? Would love to see a major Superhero who is Black get a Big budget movie maybe Luke Cage or Black Lightning or even The Falcon, but the truth of the matter is that the studios would not invest, why not? because the characters are not popular enough and the reason for that is due to the push they never had due to RACE. ( evil circle ). If you want more proof check this one out, sorry to stray just making my point, Rapper and producer Timberland has been around for ages, having many albums of his own and he was the man behind Aaliyah, Missy Elliott and Ginuwine, but he only achieved major fame worldwide when he produced beats for Justin Timberlake. Now he can ride on the white bus! So if Nick fury is black, I hope Captain America is the Black 1 who also got the Super Soldier Serum as well, now that would really mess up some peoples heads.
Oh and I also noticed the ” maybe next time” statement and I whispered to my Girlfriend oh that’s going to be Ironmans sidekick War Machine, I didn’t see or notice any Avengers hints, but after the S.L.J appearance I did immediately think , oh they are going to make a Nick Fury movie, also Nick Fury is not the only character to have the ability to change race at will in the Marvel universe , or should I say Universes?, The KingPen was black in the Daredevil movie . LoL.
When I used to read the Spiderman comics (before and around the time Todd McFarlen was drawing Spiderman) when Nick fury would make an appearance , I thought Fury was a great character just the way he is, my first time seeing Nick Fury as a black guy was when I bought the Ultimate Spiderman video game , I remember thinking , ” that’s not Nick Fury, that’s a black dude, I thought maybe they killed off Fury and replaced him with a black dude who is now using Nick Fury as a code name or Honoring Nick Fury by taking his name while filling in or taking over for Nick Fury, I had no Idea that Nick fury now has a new Superpower ” the ability to change race” lol! That’s pretty cheesy to me, I now have the Marvel Ultimate alliance and nick fury is still a white dude with grey sideburns, also in the Punisher videogame Fury is still a white guy fighting alongside the Punisher and the Black cat, I thought Fury was black only in that one video game, until I saw the Ironman movie after the credits with S.l.J., What the hell is going on in the Marvel Universe? They now have another Marvel universe to confuse the crap out of the old Marvel fans or what? I can understand them killing off a character and replacing that character with someone of a different race like maybe creating a new Cap with a black dude to replace the dead one, but changing a characters race entirely all for the sake of being politically correct is pretty anoying and makes readers lose interest in comics all together.

Well, I loved the movie but, I don’t like RD Jr. Not my fav., I think Dermot Mulroney would have been a much better Stark. He has a rougher voice and I think more of the Drinkers ravished/induced look to him. More beliveable as a millionair playboy. RD Jr. did however pull it off and I commend him for it.
I would appreciate much if Sam Jackson was nowhere near the IronMan sequel, maybe the third thou. I would however like to see a War Machine in the next film and The Mandarin. The terrorist group in the film was called the Ten Rings (mentioned twice)and, if you noticed Raza wore a fairly large red ring on his hand. Is he going to be looking for the other nine? Is Raza the Mandarin? The way they made it makes me think that, so shame on them if they misled me.
I am sum what dissapointed they would clutter any following Iron Man movies with any Avenger crap. I could see it at the end of the second or even all of the third movie. But come on, cluttering a movie that has such possibilities for the development of Iron Man, with Fury crap and Avenger mish-mash is a bit deppresing. Make a Fury movie (thats GOOD) before you jam him into someone elses movie. Come on! A bit dissapointed about that.
Another thing is in all the trailers for Iron Man, RD Jr. turns to some one off screen and says, “Have fun trying to keep up,” while in the suite. They cut that out or I completly missed it. I would assume that if that scene was not in the movie, that he was talking to Terrance Howard, before he takes him up for a test run in the War Machine suite. Hence they would put that scene in the second movie.
Not enough Iron Man action in this movie but, the building and developing of the characters was much appreciated. So I would assume the next film will be packed with action. I just want to see the suite in action! Iron Man is my by far favorite out of any comic book superhero. He beats Spidy, The Bat or any X-Man hands down. I knew right after Transformers (which was a let down) that they finaly have what it takes to make an Iron Man movie. Weeks later guess what Iron Man rumors. I almost messed my pants. I pray they don’t clutter the next film with any Fury crap.
And who really cares what color he is, come on. The issue is not Samuel L. Jackson being black. He is a horrible, one dimensional actor. Every movie I have seen him in, I can’t help thinking how bland he is. Every one of the characters he’s played in any movie he is always the same person he has no depth. He screams his lines and shouts at people. He is cursed with being type cast and it’s his own falt. The only time he swayed from his normal role was in Unbreakable, and that was a horrible movie. However I do like M Night Shamalans movies. I just don’t like Jacksons characters. To me there is no difference between they guy he played in Pulp Fiction, XXX, or Deep Blue Sea. He always seems to act the same. Again, no depth. Sorry Sam. So dissaprove of him for being a bad actor not for them making Fury black. Any color will do just need a good actor. Yeah Sam is bad ass. But he’s gotten a little stale for me.

Batman was a detective in the 1960’s and he was a MUCH different character than the one they portray in begins or dark knight. Significant different character in both tone and substance.
Sorry dude, but changing the color of Nick Fury’s skin is a far less drastic difference than what Batman is today compared to what he originally was.
Revisionism is when you go back and change what was. Moving forward with new stories (like marvel has in the comics) and new starts is not “revisionism” no matter how much you try to make it sound as such, because it’s something new.
If Marvel went back to re-printed the original old comics with Nick Fury in them and changed him from white to black, that would be revisionism, but that’s not what’s happening here.
You should really educate yourself on the definition of words in their proper context before trying to use them in an argument or debate.

I’m going to make a movie, its going to be called “Ultimate 1960’s” a documentary about MLK and the civil rights movement. Instead of hiring say…Terrance Howard to play the lead, I’m going to hire Tom Hanks. Afterall this is a colorblind society right?? So just any good actor should be able to play the role and historical context, relevance or precedence be damned.

John Favreau (the director) has made no secrets about wanting to make an Avengers movie. But he has stated that prior to the actual Avengers movie, he’d like each individual Avenger member to have his/her own movie. We’ll see if this happens….we can only hope. With Marvel having their own production house, I think the chances of Favreau’s plans happening are greater than they would be if it were some hollywood production company.

everyone knows the second movie is going to be focused on the avengers. and should also include war machine, which may be terrance howard. you could see a second suit just after ironman takes for the climax scene, and howard says, maybe next time.

Ive been keeping up with the Nick Fury Character for a while. The Ultimate version is alot better. How would it look for a guy with a streak of white hair with blue 1970’s uniform running around in a new Avenger movie, can you say box office slump. It’s the year 2008. The new Nick Fury fits the times. From the clothes to the personality He’s By far the better Nick Fury. Change is good!
even though sam and i share the same nationality i like him as nick since they patterned the ultimate version after him, but i just can’t picture white guys following him in any major war before 2000 and our govt would not have promoted him anyway you have to have the classic cigar chomping friend of captain america as a white guy, is gabe the horn blower white in this universe but i can live with it
Nick fury is a white guy in the regular marvel universe, but in the ultimate universe (still marvel, new story lines), its a black guy who looks exactly like sam jackson. The wierd thing is in the last mighty avengers comic from yesterday, it shows nick fury is still the white guy, but that the black version is a disguise that he wears.
I will admit that the thought of Jackson as Nick Fury kinda weirded me out, but he is an execellant actor, an icon of cool. He might just be able to pull it off. I’ll have to wait for the movie to have a real opinion. When I heard that Robert Downey jr. was going to play Ironman, I cringed and rolled my eyes. But boy oh boy, did he rock my panties off. I was never a big Ironman fan but thanks to the movie, I will be hunting for some comics.And I am looking forward to all the next movies leading up to the Secret Wars. Rock on!!

In fact I believe that it was in the 17th century that women were even able to be in plays. So prior to that time male actors played male & female roles. Look at the old western movies, there was a bunch of white guys painted as indians in most of those movies.
If an artist be them a singer, actor ,writer ect, has the ability to make us believe in what they are trying to get acoss, then that is ALL that matters.

Vin Diesel IS BLACK.
Actually, he is of mixed race–but is “black” according to current societal standards (and apparently to yours, too, since you listed Halle Berry [catwoman], who is also of mixed race).
The only white Parts and the ones strewn over the middle east after and RPG hits their convoy. Black people don’t want those parts, but the buzzards do.

I’m just getting tired of white parts being replaced with black actors for the sole purpose of Hollywood’s PR push for equality……..movies like Cat Woman, The Nutty Professor, Doctor Dolittle, The Honey Mooners……. were recasted with black actors and actresses for the sole reason of getting Hollywood’s Public Relations with the black community in better standings, and possibly the simple wow factor. Not to mention casting a black man in XXX- State of the Union after Vin Diesel turned them down to do a part 2. White actors get white parts…. (Nick Fury, The Thing, Cat Woman)……. Black actors get Black parts (Blade, Spawn, whatever)……… if their aren’t many good black parts to play, tell black people to start writing their own comics or ask Marvel/DC to make more black characters. And if another white part show made movie like “The Odd Couple” is remade with an all black cast I’ll really be pissed off. If a black movie can not be about gang bangers (American Gangsters, Dangerous Minds) or sterotypical black neighborhoods (Barbershop, Friday) or break dancing (Save the Last Dance) then they should learn to be more creative and original and not leech off of well made- intelligent Caucasian movies…….. like, the Nutty Professor………. Lastly, this Nick Fury being played by Samuel L. A really ballsy move would have been to cast Fury as he is (and always has been ever since Sgt. Fury and the Howling Commandos and into his early 60’s 007 “copycat” mag, NF, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.) in the mainstream line of Marvel’s comics: a white guy.
The Ultimate thing has been fun at times, but it’s played out. Why mix the two genres?

The reason that SLJ was ‘born’ to play Ultimate Fury is that the characters looks were (with permission) based directly off Jackson.

on a better note, Ironman was awesome, saw the bonus ending, can’t wait. I’m ready to see a Captian America movie, maybe a Flash movie, and wholeheartedly and greatly anticipating a Green Lantern movie.

The ticket taker at the theatre asked me if I was a “Marvel fan,” to which I replied “hell YEAH!” and he told me to stick around after the credits, which I already knew.
Pretty ballsy of Marvel to start setting up for an Avengers movie this early. It was weird seeing Jackson as Fury, since they draw Fury as him in the Ultimate line. It was like he stepped right off the page of the comics. Can’t wait to see more of him as Nick Fury. Maybe he should get his own movie.
Why post that? There’s one thing to tell people there are spoilers, but puttin up the video of what’s at the end? Just tell people to wait until the end of the credits.

The Tony think in Hulk is him talking to Gen. Ross, I would have to assume it would be something akin to this scene but with Stark doing some recruiting.

If he was, I missed it. I think they are supposed to share a common scene, but I don’t know if that meant that we saw Ironman and Hulk on screen at the same time (or Tony Stark and Bruce Banner), or maybe we see a scene with support characters. Maybe Bruce runs past the charity dinner thing that Tony crashes. I’m not really sure because I missed the tip off. It might be something that we won’t recognize until we see it in Hulk.

to be fair, he did say “spoiler”. it’ not like john didn’t warn you. i’m glad he showed that to be honest as i missed it in the cinema. cheers john!
This isn’t a spoiler. It’s not in the movie, it’s after the credits and it was already reported everywhere days ago that SLJ pops up after the credits. John didn’t say what was in the clip, you had to watch it yourself, so don’t blame him.

I just came back from the film and nothing beats watching the rest of the audience pile out of the theatre only to see you sitting there still and realising there must be something to stick around for and sitting back down.
I got spine tingles from it; this whole film was a beautiful gift to geeks everywhere.

Why oh why couldn’t they have put it in the movie before the credits. I really really hate post-credits scenes. Credits are ten minutes long. I’m not going to sit there for 10 minutes when it’s 11 PM
