Paramount Creates Mobile Programming Division

LonelyIt looks like Paramount is planning to tap into the mobile entertainment market. We get wind of this interesting news thanks to the mystical caves of yahoo:

Viacom Inc’s Paramount Pictures movies studio said on Monday that it would create a division to develop and distribute programming on wireless devices.

Media companies including Viacom have been trying to make their programming available more widely available, aiming to court advertisers who are interested in reaching consumers wherever they spend time.

I am trying to figure out if Paramount is going to be releasing their television programs and films on mobile devices; or if they are going to produce original programming for the the medium. Is paramount going to stat producing short sketches specifically made for mobile devices? Is this the beginning of an onslaught of professionally made YouTube style videos?

It would certainly be strange to start seeing pro mini vids brought to you by colgate. I am not a fan of watching stuff on my cellphone, but I know many that commute find mobile entertainment to be a handy way to bring joy to their journey. I can certainly see advertisers being interested in the medium, and if the content is made available for free online, people would be able to watch on their computers as well.

Lonelygirl15 was an internet hoax brought to you by professionals. Jessica Rose (the 20 year actress that played Lonelygirl15 currently stars on the ABC series Greek. With so many finding entertainment online in the form of short video clips, I suppose it was only a matter of time before the professionals got involved. I could be reading into this news far too much, but with the creation of a new department – I would hazard a guess that this is the route they are taking.

International friends, what are your thoughts on studio produced content for mobile devices?

  1. Here’s what David Lynch thinks about watching films on your phone:

“Now if you’re playing the movie on the telephone, you will never in a trillion years experience the film. You’ll think you have experienced it, but you will be cheated. It’s such a sadness, that you think you’ve seen a film… on your f*cking telephone! Get real!

  2. I’m still not down with actually watching any of this stuff on an ipod or phone (the screen is so small) , but this demonstrates the importance of the WGA getting in on new media. This will eventually be a huge sector of entertainment delivery and money will be made.

  3. Well, it’s about time this stuff started popping up more and more. You can already download entire movies and TV shows onto your iPod….because nowadays, we can’t even go to the gym or walk our dogs without some kind of entertainment! I gotta admit, I wasn’t too surprised when shows like Quarterlife and lonelygirl15 started hitting the net. They can be pretty addicting! I actually work for the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and for the first time, the Academy is giving shows like lonelygirl15 Primetime Emmy Consideration! You should check out http://www.emmys.com for more info and help get these shows recognized as real television. What do you think?

  4. It just makes sense new markets that still haven’t been pursued. And once again who knows what sort of stuff could be made in a short tiny screen format. I think it has some major potential and will defiantly be following this to see where it goes.
