No Camera or Actors at This Year’s ‘Golden Globes’

How frustrating is this WGA strike? On the weekend SAG announced that their members would not be attending the awards, and now it looks like a strong possibility that if the awards do go on, it won’t be aired on TV.

RopeofSilicon gives us this news:

WGA won’t picket the 2008 Golden Globes as long as it isn’t broadcast by AMPTP member NBC. This was the sticking point for the Screen Actors Guild as they weren’t interested in crossing a picket line organized by their sister union. NBC appeared to be sticking to their guns and were going to hold the HFPA to their contract, saying they were obligated to allow the network to broadcast the event. It seemed NBC thought the threat would get the orgs to back down, but instead it appears things have changed as Variety has posted an article saying that NBC “appears to be backing away from telecasting next Sunday’s (Jan. 13) Golden Globes Awards — allowing the event to proceed without TV cameras.”

I don’t usually watch ‘The Golden Globes,’ but I do think it’s frustrating that this strike has disappointed many fans that do like to watch the awards. Honestly at this point, why not just cancel the Award show? The only reason why this news worries me a little is because it now has me thinking about the fate of the upcoming Academy Awards show. Can you imagine if this strike affects and sabotages the most watched televised event on television? It won’t be pretty! What are your thoughts on this very ANNOYING news?

  1. It was just announced that the Golden Globes is kaput. In its place will be a ‘news conference” which will announce nominees and the winners. It will be only an hour long.

    And my response is:

    Disappointment.

I hope whoever has the guts to cross the lines does do. Yes, I support the strike, but I feel that this action crosses a line of its own.

You wanted blood, WGA. You got it.

  2. just read this on LA Weekly site:

“There will be a press conference this afternoon announcing that the Globes Awards ceremony will not go on. Here is the plan:
    — At 9 PM there will be a press conference covered by NBC News announcing the Golden Globe winners. (9pm-10pm)
    — At 8 PM, we are negotiating with Dick Clark Enterprises for a one-hour retrospective/clip show.
    — At 7 PM, we will air a Dateline with clips and interviews with nominees. (Currently scheduled to air for two hours on Saturday night.)
    — At 10 PM, we will broadcast an “Access Hollywood” style, Golden Globes party show…visiting the various parties in Hollywood

  3. Hmmm, here is hoping that the powers that be continue to not broadcast or publicize the Golden Globes. Meaningless pandering BS that they are. Next to them, the Oscars look pretty pristine and meaningful. That’s saying something. Why do a few publicist celebrity-worshiping Foreign Press get so much publicity for their awards in the first place?

  4. If the strike shut down the Superbowl I would be all for it continuing! These awards shows are great fun for me and I’m disappointed that the strike will impact them. I support the strike (I don’t agree with John that the WGA should be fighting to completely change/revolutionize the entire compensation system) and understand that this is a small price to pay for what will eventually be fair to all parties.
