Must Have DVD: The Bourne Ultimatum

Many times sequels suck… and recent trends show that the third parts are usually the worst (Spider-Man, Pirates, Shrek). However, this year The Bourne Ultimatum broke that trend and has joined the likes of Lord of the Rings and the original Star Wars series as trilogies where the last installment may be the best one of the bunch. No, the Bourne franchise is no LOTR or Star Wars, but The Bourne Ultimatum was (in my opinion) easily the best of the franchise and one of the very best action films of the year.

The film picks up with Jason Bourne still hunting for his true identity and an understand of how and why he ended up the way he is. Except this time he is also out for some sweet tasting vengeance for the death of his girlfriend. This brings a slightly darker edge and determination to Jason in this film that was a little lacking in the first two… I loved it.

The first Bourne movie to me was ok. I didn’t really care all that much for the second… but The Bourne Ultimatum just blew me away. fantastic action, amazing acting, a terrific pace all mixed in with a few shocks and surprises that also give this action film a sense of being a thriller as well. Just as a refresher, here’s my video review of The Bourne Ultimatum:

The DVD hits the stores this week, and after taking some time to wander through the disc, I’m really happy to tell you it’s well worth running out and grabbing. Some of the features include:

Some of the special features on this packed offering are:

* Deleted Scenes

* Man on the Move: Jason Bourne: In this five-part making-of, tour the world with Matt Damon, director Paul Greengrass, producer Patrick Crowley and producer Frank Marshall, as they give us an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at everything from Matt Damon’s rooftop chase in Tangier and shooting in fully functioning Waterloo Station, to Damon’s jump from a moving train in Berlin.

* New York Chase: Follow second unit director Dan Bradley as he choreographs the chase sequences, and watch the chase through car-mounted cameras.

* Planning the Punches: Watch as actors Matt Damon and Joey Ansah go through fight training with fight choreographer Jeff Imada.

* Rooftop Pursuit: Follow Matt Damon and crew as the Bourne team sets up a cable camera to follow him jumping across rooftops in Tangier.

* Driving School: Second unit director Dan Bradley and Matt Damon explain the preparation needed for the New York car chase.

* Feature Commentary with Director Paul Greengrass and Actor Matt Damon

The deleted scenes introduces us to a little subplot that was removed from the film, but nothing too special, and the commentary track was ok… but also nothing special (I was really looking forward to the commentary). But the Rooftop Pursuit and New York chase features were pretty outstanding.

Overall this is a full featured, rich and entertaining DVD release. Make sure to add it to your collection.

  1. John, if you like this film, you should get an HD DVD player ;)

It’s an awesome move though and I think the finest of all three. Certainly, without doubt one of the best action movies I’ve seen in many years.

  2. I wouldnt compare it to the new Bond, but it was more like what I wanted a Bond movie to be like during the later Brosnan period.

And the shaky cam arguments are a bit much. If it didnt bother you in the 3rd one, the shaky cam in Supremacy isnt that much worse.

Ill admit, it bothered me a little bit in both the 2nd and the 3rd. It just felt a little more polished in the 3rd, but it doesnt really take away or add anything for me, its just another style.

  3. Paul Greengrass knows what he is talking about with directing and how the camera should move in both the films, but i am really saying that as a british person defending another but if i wasnt i still would say that it was a brillant style and made me want to watch them

  4. I find it fascinating that you liked the third one as much as you did but thought the first one was just okay.

You really dont like origin stories or intoductions much at all, do you?

Im exactly the opposite. I still think the first one is the best of the three. I agree the second is the weakest, but I still quite enjoyed it, and the third comes in just below the original for me (but not much at all). The perfect end to the franchise.

Damon created a character that is so stoic and mechanical, but at the same time has tremendous depth and charisma. I really enjoy the franchise as a whole.
