Wolverine By Summer 2008?

Next summer is shaping up to have a couple of heavy comic book movie hitters. Iron Man, Batman and Hulk are already primed to go, but it looks like Fox wants in on the party and is aiming to have Wolverine ready to launch too.

The good folks over at JoBlo give us this:

Fox is keen to get WOLVERINE’s solo flick in theaters for next summer, even though clawed Aussie Hugh Jackman will be filming Baz Luhrmann’s epic romance AUSTRALIA until this October. Apparently the studio wants to fast-track the partial-prequel and get Jackman back in adamantium and ready to slice right after he’s done with the song-and-dance.

Yikes. By next summer? Really? Ok, lets look at this a little objectively here. This is possible technically. If they already have a script they like… then there is nothing in the world stopping Fox from starting pre-production on Wolverine before October, and there’s also nothing stopping them from starting filming (the stuff that doesn’t have Jackman in it) before October either. Just because Jackman can’t be there till October doesn’t mean they can’t start. And Jackman’s scenes would probably take about a month to 6 weeks to shoot. So yeah… it is POSSIBLE. HOWEVER….

As much as I’m looking forward to a Wolverine film, next summer is already kinda full for Comic Book genre films isn’t it? It strikes me as a bit unwise to race to get Wolverine onto an already crowded dance floor. Why not just put it off like 4 more months and release it in like October or November? Traditionally not BIG box office months… but Wolverine would be the only big game in town.

What do you think? Should Wolverine indeed try to release in summer of 2008, or should they put it off a little?

  1. If the Wolverine movie is rushed into being released in summer 2008, then it will probly realy suck balls, so they shouldn’t worry so much about when it is coming out and they should concentrate on making the story great.

  2. Since there is no set official director attached (most likely be Len Wiesman of ‘Underworld’ and ‘Die Hard 4’) and no other cast other than Jackman is 100% official, and they haven’t even started prep yet? Even X-Men 3 had a little over a year- and that’s even with a director switch.

Iron Man’s principal photography (other than pickups) is done. They just started post. The Dark Knight? Currently filming. Hulk got started a few weeks ago. Even the alleged Indy 4 film is shooting. Rambo? Shooting!

Wolverine? They have to crack it down, have a director approve/sign off on script (note to you fanboys out there: that script may have since been rewritten into something better or worse) and get other actors in line.

Right now I’m skeptical about summer 2008. If they get lucky, they could crack a holiday like Thansgiving or (hopefully!) X-Mas 2008.

and one last thing: X-Men and X2 were far from “rushed”…even despite problems “Last Stand” wasn’t terrible and I didn’t feel it being rushed either.

  3. This doesn’t boad well for the movie if they do rush the film. I personally would rather wait a handful of extra months to get a quailty movie on one of my favorite comic characters. As much as I’m looking forward to a solo Wolverine movie I fear it’ll end up like X-Men 3, a disappointing nightmare.

  4. Actually all 3 X-MEN films were rush-jobs. It only showed with THE LAST STAND b/c the lack of script (i.e. they had action set-pieces story-boarded without a story) and frantic search for a director. All this shit just so they could make a release-date they announced and stuck with regardless.

My guess is Lenn Wiseman helms WOLVERINE. He was rumored as a finalist for the job and LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD had done pretty good business at the box-office. Not to mention, his schedule is suspicously clear (at the moment!)

  5. X-Men 3 was rushed. They filmed it until December 2006. And we all remember what a piece of shit it was. Rushed productions are NEVER good. Look at “Hitman” or “Dark is Rising”: they are still filming and the damn thing comes out in October. Fuck that.

  6. Well, I like the Wolverine character and up until a few weeks ago could not wait for a solo movie. But wow Fox can really screw the crap out of movies, Spider-Man 3 was rushed and I thought it turned out terrible. Fox is doing the crappiest job in making these movies and from what you’re all telling me all they want is money and don’t having the slimmest regard for the movie making process. At the moment Fox is the equivelent of a scheeming, fat, power hungry buerecreat.
I now am not anticipating this movie in the least.

  7. Hopefully this will be better than it is sounding. I REALLY don’t want it rushed like X3. If they can get a lot of prep time in before Jackman comes on board great, but don’t rush it into a packed summer with other Comic Book movies just to compete because all will loose out then. I’d rather it be late and good than on time and alright or bad.

  8. They do have a script…..and it’s apparently shit.

This is Fox John, this is what they do all the damn time. They rush films into production because they think that effective marketing can solve all a blockbuster film’s problems (the opening weekends for X3 & Fantastic Four 2 seem to prove that they can get away with it). They never seem to plan ahead and start pre-production on their blockbusters early enough and now, they’ve obviously realised that they don’t have much of a schedule for summer 2008 and NEED Wolverine. I have no hopes for it, and i hope Jackman pulls out like Thomas Jane did for Punisher 2.

I’m sorry everyone, i just really hate the current management at Fox. They have no respect for cinema, just release dates. If you kill off a James Cameron/Ridley Scott team-up Alien 5 to make Alien vs. Predator instead, you have no interest in making great movies.

  9. The Fact that Fox wants to rush on what could be a very good film dissapoints me. Personally I think Wolveriene missed the train to make it for the summer blockbusters of 2008. Right now the only think I could imangine is either a Holiday Season release of 2008 or They wait till next summer

  10. I think it would be a huge mistake on part of Fox to rush something like a beloved character as Wolverine to his first solo movie. This move from X-men into Magneto and Wolverine could very well make or break this franchise and a rush job isn’t going to help.

  11. This sounds like another rush job, just like X3. Even though I enjoyed the last X-men, you can definitely see its flaws because of it. But then again, X3 made a shitload of money, so Fox keeps pumpin’ them out, so it kinda makes sense in that aspect.
