Matthew Fox in Speed Racer

Matthew Fox first crossed my path when my first wife got me addicted to Party of Five. (I had a bit of a TV crush on Neve Campbell) But I have forgiven her. Now that he is better known for his role on LOST, Fox has made a better name for himself. That name has got him in negotiations to be involved in Speed Racer.

Yahoo News says:

Fox is in final negotiations to play Racer X in the live-action update of the 1960s cartoon, which the brothers behind the “Matrix” franchise are writing and directing.

In addition, Australian actor Kick Gurry is in negotiations to play Sparky, Speed’s hippie mechanic.

Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, Susan Sarandon and John Goodman already are on board the film, which will shoot in the summer in Berlin.

I admitted before to not being a fan of Speed Racer, but at the same time I don’t hate it. But as each little bit of casting news comes out combined with the Wachowski’s involvement, I get more and more interested in this.

Although it is based on a campy anime show from the 60s, I think this has scads of potential to bring us a wild driving action movie. I mean with the Fast and the Furious franchise being the benchmark, this can only be better. And with the Wachowski’s on board it might just rival the eye candy of Tokyo Drift.

This is shaping up to be a good movie. Hopefully it is.

  1. I was a big fan of Speed Racer when I was a kid. When I heard of the live action movie, I thought, another bad idea. But the cast alone has me definitely interested.

And Matthew Fox is a really good choice to play Racer X. He’s a pretty good actor. I liked him in that show Haunted & he was pretty funny in his small part in Smokin Aces.

  2. Great casting.

I’ve liked Matthew Fox since Party of Five also, so I’m glad to see him finally getting his fair share of work. Plus, like Slybri said, he even kinda looks like Racer X from the toon.

And I’m a big fan of the Wachowski brothers directing style.
I think they make some of the best looking films. So I know the visuals are gonna be top notch.
As long as Speed doesnt become a symbol for christ, I think we’re in for a good time.

  3. I’m Bemused be comparisons to Fast and Furious. If this movie turns out to be anything like those movie surely the only logical explanation would be recent lobotomies.

  4. I have to say, I love the Wachowskis, though I was a little… shocked about this being their next film (whatever happened to their Conan movie? anyone?), but the casting information has steadily gotten me more and more hyped.

    I’m up for it.

  5. Cool. Matt Fox does look kinda like Racer X from the toon. All the cast so far do kinda resemble the toons. I hope they keep the look of the cars the same and not try to “modernize” them into some crap without character.

And I hope they do right by Chim-Chim. Chim-Chim was the true heart of the show. ;) hehe
