The best team won, France should never have scored, on that non penalty shot. The player was never touched and dove. Italy came back with HEART 10 minutes later.

July 1 vs Brazil – The Zidane of old. A great performance by Zizou
July 5 vs Portugal – Non-existant through most of the match but for his penalty to send France through

So basically, 2 good performances won it for Zidane, whereas Fabio Cannavaro was fantastic for Italy in every game, led by example and gave commanding captain’s performances throughout.

Getting away with cheating is one of the best feelings in the world, and it brings great satisfaction to cheat and be rewarded with a penalty, or an opponent being sent off.
The ref judges what he sees which keeps it to a bearable amount, but cheating is a part of the game and the better you are at it, the better you are at the game.
Chess match? Could you please refrain from using a game that actually requires real thinking to games shown on Sportscenter. You set up your defense and hope you get a decent shot on goal. In fact some teams don’t even get one shot on goal in an entire game. There is a lot less thinking involved in soccer than in an NFL game (I would love to see the complexity of the professional soccer playbook). I highly doubt a soccer game would go 4 hours without a goal either. Just like all other sports, eventually someone will score (most sporting events in the US are several hours long anyway). Could we please stop pretending like this was stolen away from Olympus to be taken down to mankind.

The thing is, it is the nature of the game. Soccer is a chess match that regardless of how open the teams play it would not be unusual to go 2 or 3 full games without a goal.
Baseball is VERY unusual for an extra innings game to go past 11 inings, or Basketball games to go past 1 extra period.
It is the nature of Soccer. You can’t have games go 4, 5 or 6 hours long on a regular basis. It’s just ludicrous.
If baseball games routinely went 6 hours… you bet your ass they would switch it to a Home Run Durby or peanalty free throws in Basketball.
Penalties is one of the diciplines of the game. They need something to decide the match after already going 30 full minutes of overtime. This is the best way to do it.
If they didn’t, then everyone in North America would be complaining about how long the Soccer games are.

Yes John and I said nothing about NFL’s overtime rules being any better. At least baseball or basketball decide the game by playing the game out. They don’t decide it by a home run derby or free throws.

I’m not saying cheating is a skill, I’m not saying I want Zizou to get away with it, but when throughout the competition the officials turned blind eyes to bad tackles, great dives, pulling, pushing, jumping, stamping, hand balls, offsides, misconduct, when the option for the officals to see a replay was not used, how can they use it here for Zizou (if they did).
My point is that the players didnt start to act the way they do overnight, and infact it is by poor refereeing and lack of punishment that this has developed into an actual part of the game. Gone are the days where a good player would have mud on his face and not change his clothes at half time because the advert on his chest is covered.
MODERNISE USE A VIDEO REF
I was not in Germany for the game I cannot say if the forth offical actually saw it as it happened, but I know it wasnt indicated immeaditaly and that the play stopped because a player was injured not because of the incident. And there was no indication of an offical rasing a flag until the replay was shown. The reports are saying that the 4th offical said it over the ref radio at the time it happened, but they have had almost a day to get that story together.
Zizou has received the Golden Ball for his contribion to the tournament.
The BBC commentators also argue it was the right decision however he found out about it. Lineker afterwards suggested it could have been video playback but this was speculation. Probably it will be investigated soon due to the high profile nature of the incident and how pivital it proved to be.

Getting away with any infringment a player can is part of the mordern beautiful game.
If the ref or the officals didnt see it with their naked eye then it didnt happen, and nothing can be done about it until there is a question raised about it after the game.
Obviously in this case it happened and he should be punished, but he should not have been sent off if it wasnt seen directly by an official.
There is no place for a TV replay in soccer (according to FIFA) so using it to send off Zizou is wrong, as it should and could have been used in so many other matches where the refs decision was very poor to say the least. (see already mentioned above Italy V Australia)
The players are getting the bad name for poor sportsmanship when it is the FIFA officials that need to be looked at, the teams are researching and playing the ref as much as they are the team they are against.
I watched some Baseball later that night and the commentators were chatting about this. There analysis was ‘they play for three weeks and then it goes to penalties? The deserved the win the wholte championship and the did it with class. They showed to everyone that they can beat hosts, they can play for 2 hours and dont lose the speed and they can score goals (not penalties). The Best Coach of the World (not becuase hes the coaco of Italian national team, but he was extraordinary coach of Juventus), Marcello Lippi did wonders with the experiensed and yonger players, he showed to the world that good tactics count and that Italian football is the one of the best in the world. I’m glad for them and finally after waiting for so many years Italy took the Cup.
Regarding the scandal: can you guys imagine how this scandal was pushing hard on the players? I mean 90% of the Italian National Team play in clubs that are about to be thrown in the Seria B and C. This means that lot of them will be changing teams, coaches, etc. And these guys managed to WIN THE WORLD CUP. Yes, the scandal was affecting the the team and only Italian team, but the effect was for sure negative.

P.S. I can not hold myself paying due respect to the German team, who are today one of the BEST teams of the world and I see them making much better progress on Europan Cup in two years. But again, Forza Italia :) !

Sorry Dre… I’m not sure what camera you were watching… but the Aussie guy threw his slding body in front of the Italian strikers legs without getting the ball forcing him to try to jump over him. THAT IS A FOUL. Especially in the penalty area. How on earth is anyone debating this?
This game wasn’t one of my favorite, but it did have its high point. That penalty shot by Zizou was fucking awesome. Then came that head shot from Italy which made me jump out of my seat. Thoughs who said the ref was biased you got to be kinding me, the guys was calling Yellow cards like every 2 minutes in the first half for both sides, then in the second half he almost didn’t call anything at all even though there were some clear penalties comitted by both sides. That brings me to Zizou’s head attack, i hated to see him go out like that(being his last game and all) but he really should have kept his cool. Guess that’s karma at work . Something that never happened? Grosso cut inside and Lucas Neil impeded him. If Grosso had stayed on his feet after that foul to play the advantage, the ball was lost – thus cancelling the advantage and a penalty would have been awarded regardless.

Italy played against Australia for 39 minutes with 10 men. If Australia were too shit to use the man-advantage, then boo-fucking-hoo for them. The match is 90mins long, if you concede a goal in the 90th minute, then boo-fucking-hoo again!

Overall, Italy deserved to be crowned champions. They’ve played tough teams throughout and only conceded ONE goal to an opposing team, which ironically was from the penalty-spot. (the own goal against USA doesn’t count)
If any one player deserved to win the World Cup it was Fabio Cannavaro. He was a rock throughout!
Italy were certainly the better team in the 1st half and France only got their goal from a soft penalty. France dominated possession in the second-half but they never looked like scoring. Most of their shots were from long range and never troubled Buffon. Their two best chances fell to Henry and Zidane, both of which Buffon dealt with relatively comfortably.
Everyone seems to forget that it was in fact Italy who came closest, with Toni hitting the crossbar in the first half and having a goal disallowed in the second.
Overall, deserved winners. I was cheering for Italy all the way through, but a part of me would have liked to Zidane lift the trophy in his last ever game. What he did was disgraceful. 5 fantastic penalties = fantastic for Italy.
