  1. Kris, right on. I love John and the bubble he lives in, but I highly doubt that Transformers is going to be the blockbuster he describes. Who has more name recognition to you “man on the street”, Superman or Optimus Prime? Even better, who has more recognitionition to your woman on the street. I would have to explain this movie to my wife and then drag her there in leg irons to get her to see it in the theatre.

  2. Joel Siegel
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joel Siegel (born July 7, 1943) is an American film critic for the ABC morning news show Good Morning America. He is well known for giving ridiculously positive reviews of all but the most horrible of movies. If you ever see an advertisement for a movie and it has to resort to using a Joel Siegel quote, you can be quite positive that the movie is a real stinker.

  3. I think that jmarps is right on when he says that the internet community is totally different than the “real” world. I would consider myself to be slightly above average for a normal “real” world person (when it comes to movie knowledge and info). John, you were right when you talked about Serenity. The average person has never heard of the series and therefore had no interest in the movie, whereas the internet community was much more interested in it. The same goes for Snakes on a Plane (and even Transformers for that matter). Transformers will not even be close to John’s prediction in the money it will make. When I mention either Snakes on a Plan or Transformers to a regular person that I may be talking to, they have no interest in either movie. Besides the internet community, nobody else seems to even care about Transformers or think that Snakes on a Plan will be a stupid movie.

So I’m glad that John did realize that there is a difference between the two.

Keep up the good work on the show guys!!

  4. One of the questions raised was,”Is the internet community different than the ‘real world.’

The answer is a resounding YES!

The majority of people use the inetrnet in one form or another, but the people who actaully become active in the community, the ones who actively read blogs, post on forums, listen to blogcasts are still in the minority. That is changing, but slowly.

Strangely, people that are active in the community seem to understand that this is a “B-Movie,” that the film is not trying to take itself too seriously. From my personal experience, others are not getting that and they think that this is a “serious” horror film.

  5. – Nice to see Demolition Man getting some love!

    – I’ve never read Seigel so I don’t that he’s the Uwe Boll of movie critics as you all seem to be saying but that radio show was pretty fucking pathetic. All I heard was three grown men ganging up on an old dude for kicks. There was no debate. That wasn’t a discussion, that was bullying. Maybe he deserved it, maybe not, but Smith is leaping on this for the publicity and those radio show hosts are obnoxious retards.

    – According to an interview in Total Film (UK mag), the writer of Snakes On A Plane said that Flight 121 or whatever was NEVER the title of the film. It was the title the crew used during production because they couldn’t stop laughing at Snakes On A Plane.

    – I’ve liked all of Shamhammer’s movies so far and I figured he was about due a huge backlash from the critics (The Village got good reviews here in the UK) but it’s a bit difficult to dismiss all of those trashings. Oh well, he sounds like an asshole anyway.

  6. I stand corrected. In the “Smith vs. Siegel” post, I thought Smith was in the same screening room as Siegel. Now I can see where some folks are coming from when they think Smith is ranting a bit too much. Still, I’m not the biggest Smith fan, and I think he should lay off personal insults to Siegel, and stick with the problem at hand and his criticism of a critic who behaved in an unprofessional manner. The radio show was suffice for payback.

I don’t mean Siegel should be off the hook; far from it. He could have walked out without raising a fuss. (Nobody followed him?) And, as I said in the comment section, I’ll repeat: Joel’s sold out. All fluff and kissing Hollywood’s butt. The only time I’d watch GMA and Siegel is on Oscar nom day and if I have the schedule to see it.

I’m not sure where the ‘Siegel’ praise for Bloodsport, Hard To Kill, Commando and Rambo First Blood II comes from. Is this to suggest Siegel only loves silly entertaining action films?
That is a very narrow view of film critics, and not to mention untrue.

  7. Thanks for answering, John. What you say makes sense, and I have to admire that Canadian decency of yours showing through again (we’re a black-hearted lot, us blood lolly-eating Englishmen). I’ll check out your thoughts nearer the release date.

Oliver Stone has made some great films, so I’m looking forward to this one. What worries me is that he’s the first American director to tackle this subject directly, and I don’t want this to end up being an overly sentimentalised film.

  8. Hey there “Black Steven”

    That’s a great question.

All the media that was at the screening were asked by the studio to hold off their reviews until a few days before the movie opens.

They do this so that the hype for the movie hit as close to the movie as possible.

If the reviews hit 2 weeks before the movie opens, then it’s effects have pretty much worn off by the time the film opens (at least that’s my understanding)

So me not releasing my review yet is just out of respect for the studios request. They let me see it… the least I can do is honor their request.

As for Harry… he’s have to answer that question himself.

    Cheers!

    ~John

  9. A question for Mr Campea:

Can you tell us the reason why you’re holding off on reviewing ‘World Trade Centre’? I only ask because I notice Harry Knowles has posted his review (if you can call those extended rambles of his ‘reviews’), and I’d love to hear your take on it.

It’s cool if they’ve given you a good reason to say nothing, but Knowles is such a ‘player’ these days it seems odd that he’d break some sort of opinion embargo.

  10. You need to try these blood lollies, Doug. Cooling, refreshing, delicious. They’re especially tasty when you make them from the blood of your vanquished enemies.

Blood lollies make us strong like Vikings! Strong like Chief Bromden! STRONG LIKE BEPPO THE SUPERMONKEY!!

  11. Again with the v for vendetta praise!! wow we must have seen different versions because the one i saw was one of the worst things ever committed to film…

anyway…i like smiths films and all and I can’t wait to see clerks 2 but he is being a baby about this….

smith keeps saying it isn’t about this guy not liking the film it is about disturbing the screening but if this siegel had yelled out “holy shit this film is fucking awesome” would smith be complaining about it??

he is milking this to get all the publicity he can…

big deal…a bunch of critics who were getting paid to seeing the movie for free had a tiny little disturbance during a film….big fucking deal….wah wah wah….

then smith talks about the 8 minute standing ovation the film got at cannes…well at cannes when they don’t like a film they boo throughout the screening and that has happened to a lot of films…I don’t hear of other directors who have that happen go from radio station to radio station and persoanlly confront every person who booed….

  12. i think once films start costing the huge amounts they do know box office talk has become very interesting…..

overall takings are down yet the average cost of making a film is going up…..

not too many industries can sustain a trend like that and something has to give so personally I like box office talk …

oh and bloodsport, hard to kill, rambo (all 3 of them) and commando are fucking awesome

  13. Bloodsport rules. Everybody loves Bloodsport – because it rules. Chong Li lives forever.

I don’t mind box-office talk, and I know you’ve stated your reasons for bringing them up several times – but seriously… Why didn’t you have a debate concerning which movie you thought you would each like the best, instead of which one would make the most money? It would have been more interesting…to me at least. You can do what you want I guess.

  14. If I leave my post (just because), I would get fired. How come he can walk out at will ?? You know what, I want his job ! watch screeners and write some bullshit reviews? Hell yeah

  15. Siegel is a cocksucker. I really hate his summer movie preview…this is a guy who loves rambo, commando, hard to kill, bloodsport, etc…

And don´t know why he is so famous, he is a jackass

  16. I seriously believe Lady is going to flop. It seems like the public is starting to tire of M .Night’s films, and I seriously haven’t heard anyone, I mean, anyone, not one sole on either the net nor in person drop the title ‘Lady in the Water’ whatsoever.

Monster House, which I am actually looking forward to next to Clerks 2, will beat out the three. From what I’ve heard, Monster House is in the nature of fun 80’s flicks such as The Goonies, Monster Squad, Explorers, etc. I’ll probably wait a while to see, so that my high expectations don’t kill the flick for me.

I really don’t see much for ‘Super Ex-Girlfriend’..I don’t know what it is, but it has that “It’s a goner” feeling surrounding.

  17. if Lady flops it’s going to be the 3 disappointment in a row for WB. That’s sad. But i think it will be 4 after Monser House Ex Girlfriend and Pirates 2
