  1. Another great show.

I’m not a scientologist but I’m a bit surprised this hasn’t been brought up yet. I’m not a scientologist but I’m a bit surprised this hasn’t been brought up yet. I too think this ‘belief system’ or whatever you want to call it is a crock of shit however, isn’t this the same thing that they said 2 millennia ago when Jesus was supposedly walking the earth? Aren’t the beginnings of all religions littered with incredulity and shit slinging? To me, this doesn’t seem any different than the history of any religion and as much as I hope that it never takes off, I wouldn’t be surprised if in 2000 years they’re worshipping whatever beliefs Hubbard has set up. I hope not, but you just never know.

  2. I only watched one video edition. I listen to you guys when I’m out & about, so audio does me fine. Video for special occasions?

Doug and John, for anime, check out Berserk, a TV series which is hard to find but has been released in a box set on DVD. Doug, if you like conan, you’d love this. Strongly recommended.

PS I love the 1 hr show! More like this please!

  3. i am all for video-pod cast. keep the file size small please as not every one of your listener stays in 1st world country where bandwidth is cheap. In india we pay per megabyte of download.
    a movie blog fan

  4. As for Anime I’d have to say I’m most anticipating the Neon Genesis Evangelion US remake. Holy shit – if anything has the possibility to be INSANE onscreen it’s that show. It may still feature underage drivers in robots but it’s FUCKING brutal.

Guys – make the round table the video edition. That way we can watch Darren’s dark skinned beauty.

  5. Doug, I shit you not, my mom has an old Volvo, a navy blue 1987 model that she still drives sometimes. I used to drive it when I first got my license, but now I’ve got my own car. It was a really reliable car, GREAT with gas, but the thing was so fucking old that the air conditioning was dodgy as hell. Other than that, it’s a good ride. Volvos are very safe cars. If you get a good one, you shouldn’t have any problems with it.

  6. – Conan is all about looking like a mean motherfucker. Say what you like about his acting but when Schwarzenegger comes into frame he fucking owns that screen. It’ll be tough to find anyone as perfect for that role as Arnie. Maybe Dirty Dancing 2 guy can make a star out of someone and pull off and amazing movie. I hope so.

    – Zombie movies rule on occasion. Shaun of the Dead was genius but Land of the Dead was disappointing same-old-same-old. I thought the Dawn remake was better than Land. Zombie baby, baby!

  7. Here’s a question, does the person playing Conan needs to know how to act? Arnie was great as Conan, but he didn’t really need to act, he just have to look badass

  8. -’30 Days’ the ancient Evil are vampires, the comic is great the art is kick ass. Read it, you’ll love it! The town the story takes place in is Barrow, Alaska…it may be considered in the artic.

Vampires + 30 Days of night = Crazy Delicious!

-Anime, Cowboy Bebop rules, Akira still confuses me. Vanpire Hunter D is great too. I actually saw FF:Advent Children today at a special HD screening here in NYC, it was pretty cool but I never got into the game so it was a little odd. But the fight scenes ruled.

-‘World War Z’, Read “The Zombie Surival Guide” before the film (I’m reading it right now). The guy that wrote ‘World War Z’, Max Brooks, wrote ‘Zombie Guide’ as a premise to ‘Z’. The scientific aspect of why the zombie does what it does is in there. I’m sure it will be referenced in the movie. ‘World War Z’ will released as a novel in Sept.

-Conan, Arnie was the best…I don’t know if I want to see a new one and I don’t know who can be as awesome as Arnie was back in the day. Dolph is to old now to be Conan. Boaz is a cool name though^_^

    -Tenacios D Fucking RULES!!!!

-Volvo is for bored couples who haven’t had sex for 3 years and listen to the light station. I ask you, is this what you want Doug?

    Great podcast fellas!
    -Tanya

  9. Darren, the zombie Q. The motivation is base driven, the need to feed. Reproduction is merely its byproduct. The dead attack and feed on living, feeding for a moment and moving on to fresher victim(s). The prevailing theory is infection. As they feed they are infecting their food, the virus is highly contagious and spreads rapidly. It reaches a certain level and becomes undesirable.

The purpose is the consume, Wolf. Much like the living. World economies are based on that idea. To get more – make bigger. What’s the point if it all? We can’t keep any of those things, we all die. It’s a basic desire to devour. More money. More food. More things. More sex… ect.

How can the ghouls differentiate between living and dead? It’s not smell. Zombies (Romero classical) are able to target without seeing, general location. The idea is electrical, a different kind of field, much like a shark. Without any of the hindrances of being alive (clouded mind(s) with various subjects and social responsibilities). The ghouls are running on animal instincts, tapping into latent ESP. Very much how a person knows knows when he/she’s been watched even though they can’t see the viewer.

An example would be you at one end of a completely darken theater. You have a lighter and flick it on. That flame will catch the attention of someone on the other end, a tiny light. Now multiply that by seven you have a bright illumination. Like a moth to a flame – the ghouls target.

What would happen when they fed and infected all the remaining living? The last film, “Land Of The Dead” answered the question. Fragments of memories surface, but nothing too complex. The product of having too much free time.

Time is the other issue. The very same virus that is reanimating the dead is also acting as a preservative. While they ARE decaying, it is at a significantly lower rate. They’re gonna be around for a very long long time…

    October 27th, 1968.

What is that date? Fall of mankind. At the start of the “Night Of The Living Dead”, Johnny (Russell Streiner) comments to Barbara (Judith O’Dea) about the time change, losing an hour of sleep. And general complaining about the long drive there and home to just put a wreath. This means the lost hour happened during Fall daylight savings. I Googled the info. Taking the film’s release year as the fiction’s year meant it happened in 1968. In that year, Fall daylight savings happened on Sunday, October 27th. The movie by the way was released on October 1st. I believe I’m right on this.

  10. I just watched Shaun Of The Dead. I thought it’s really good. I’m kinda questioning like Darren is. Why do the undead want to eat people? If they need people to survive, then once they eat everyone, there will be no one left to eat, so whats the point of Zombies? They have no real purpose.

Doing a video AD would be good at certain times. Not all the time because I enjoy blogging on here while still listening to you guys. Do it for special times. Or I thought what would be awesome, if the 3 of you guys watched whatever movie over the weekend and each one of you do a video review….Come on Doug would be hilarious doing a video review of Superman Returns. You could all do the video reviews before the AD.

And I have a question. What is the intro music to the AD?

  11. Hey guys great podcast as always, im already a big fan of the new friday roundtable.

Never seen the starblazers show but im still a so-so fan since theres a couple shows i love, but i’d say my favorite would have to be Evangelion, which as i’ve mentioned before is also being made into a full length movie in part by WETA.

  12. ^^ Someone loves caps lock :/

Good show, not as funny as Mondays but I still enjoyed it. As for the video edition plz bring it back, themed maybe once a month would be lovely.

As for that Road to Guantanamo film I think you will be disappointed by it. It may have a hard political edge but the way it’s been made I just really disliked and switched off after 1/2 hour. It is a docu/reconstruction film which I really hated. Either it should be straight up docu (interviews, news footage etc) or a film based on a true story. Mixing interview with reconstruction just didn’t seem to work.

Anyway look forward to next weeks show as always and plz get Mr Nagy to record one of his shows I want to hear one sometime.

Ohh and Doug Nagy’s mom is soooo ………………………. *insert poor taste mother joke here*

Ohh and thanks for the essay Seeley ;)

    ~Sam

  13. HEY JOHN, I ADDED YOU AS A FRIEND ON MYSPACE AND YOU HAVE NOT ACCEPPTED IT YET. PLEASE DO , T M B IS FUNNY AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. ALTOUGH SOMETIMNES I DO NOT AGREE WITH WHAT YOU SAY. IT’S ALL GOOD, THATS WHY THEY CALL IT DECUSSIONS. ANYWAY LATER. TAKE CARE.

    CTD->

  14. Now to please Sam….

    1) I wish I was a morning show disc jockey. If I was, then I maybe I could wear a T shirt that said “Black men are gay…really gay” with photos of Chris Tucker and Tiger Woods, and proudly walk down a street knowing full well I’m going to bump into Spike Lee I could give this a nice little laugh. But I’m not-and I don’t have a mandate is ‘to shock and promote discussion’ or ‘everything is fair game for riducle’ so I’m not up to that…”esteemed” higher pedastal. I guess it’s a huge difference, then: a radio perrsonality walks down the street with a shirt that will most likely INTENTIONALLY offend someone is hailed as a cool guy and a hero of the first admendment; John Doe wears it while walking down the street INTENTIONALLY out to cause a (negative) reaction and we would slap that fool upside the head.

Look, is Scientology and the concept of Dianetics/Hubbardism isn’t an iron wall. It has critics. I myself don’t agree with it. But I take strong offense at the shirt – but the stronger offense is this joker apparently just happens to walk down a street where Jenna Elfman was spotted? Coincidence? I suppose it is. You think Jenna overreacted? I don’t. I also think they succeeded in provoking a response. That’s what they wanted.

I’m sorry, Doug, Darren C, I cannot disagree with you two more, and I feel you two are way offf the marker with this one. May I also point something out? TOM CRUISE. There was a period in his career when he was accused of being gay. He sometimes still is. If he was, I think he would have come out by now. Maybe it’s an old hat so he’s used to such *sharp wit* now.

I’m not so sure. Yes, the couch jumping on Oprah Winfey’s couch added fuel to the fire. Taking on Brooke Shields in a spat about meds doesn’t improve an image. But don’t hand me this crock of ‘being insecure’. You want to feel insecure? Tell you what. How about being accused of being gay when you may be not? Sure, you can laugh it off, but for how long? When will you get tired of it and then just lash out? When you lash out are you insecure with yourself or are just mad as hell ?

What’s your breaking point? When will that clown trying to provoke you push the wrong button and gets you to get in his face? If you walk away, is that ‘confirmation’ about what they say about you true?

A line was crossed. You can’t justify it. Even if you feel you could, just ask this one more time : Why did he make the shirt and hunt down Jenna Elfman? (and yes, he and/or those he work with had to)

    2) *and you never thought I would get here, right?* Congrats to the Movie Blog and for that interesting bit of trivia. I think some of the other podcasts are either shorter or more specific…while MB covers a wide range of movie topics, say, the one from TheForce.net is going to centered on all things connected to Lucasfilm. Don’t forget the other day you had a near full hour show. Am I saying these are factors? I’m just as clueless.

I will tell you that even though I could, I don’t listen to the podcast on iTunes.
Maybe some just listen to the mp3 or recent upload on myspace.

But yes…Movie Blog should be higher. Up one or two on the notch anyway.

    3) If you do one, fine. If not, fine. Maybe for special occasions, once a month or something like that.

    4) 30 Days. Was this the plot for Dean Koontz’ ‘Phantoms’ just in a different location (it was also made into a so-so movie with one of John’s favorite actors, Ben Affleck.) Still, it’s been some time since we had a decent creature feature. Bring it on. And I thought Josh was just as hokey as one of John’s favorite actors in that silly Bay film Cuba Gooding Jr was good in the film, although then again his character was actually based on a real life person- and used factual basis in the development of such character.

    5) Looks like a good movie. If it opens in my area I’ll see it.

    6) I like Tom Jane in the part myself if they don’t get Selleck as an older Magnum. I personally don’t see Selleck back, not because I wouldn’t want him back, but because it isn’t the way the studios think. This isn’t 1979 where a studio would okay the original Star Trek cast; this is a time when films based on any show now airing on TVland is fair game and in vouge. One thing I do not want this to be is another “Starsky & Hutch” or “Dukes Of Hazzard” where it was turned into a comedy and mocked the show and/or the time period.

Giamatti as Higgins. Kudos to the commenter who came up with that offhand thought.
(ha ha ha ha ha ha) Now if I can only think of who would make a good Rick.

TJ= Micheal Clarke Duncan, of course.

    7) Yeah, where the hell is Princess Bride?
    Also, where’s ‘Malcom X’?

As for “Saving Private Ryan”? Yes, it should have been lower, but stil on there. Maybe not in the top tem. Also, I HATED E.T. as a kid. HATED IT HATED IT. Every minute. Am I cold and heartless? Perhaps. Or maybe as a kid the scene where ET gets Elliot bombed tainted the rest of the film for me. All I know is that I hated that movie as a kid. I hate it still now.

    8) I thought Akira was great; Ghost In The Shell was better. My favorites are Cowboy Bebop, Blackjack, Bubblegum Crisis and Appleseed, some appreciation for Sailor Moon’s cheese. My sister’s into Oh My Goddess, Sailor Moon, New Dominion Tank Police and Your’e under arrest.

    9) I’ve had enough flesh eating Zombie films for now. Pitt or no Pitt.

    10) Give Yakin a chance. Fresh is a great film.
And don’t knock him for writing the 89 Punisher. He fought to keep the skull in and as fired, re-written by the producer. This is well documented. Also…for a B action film, the Ludgren Punisher wasn’t that bad. Just wasn’t Punisher anymore. Mark Goldblatt went back to his day job (film editing) after directing this film.

Would you rather have Paul WS Andersen behind the Conan film? McG?
    If not, who?

    11) “Fast 3” is turning out to be a little surpsise for some, but how’s it holding against the Garfield sequel. That’s the real question :)

    Oh, what about :

    a) Bryan Singer

    b) Dirty Love

  15. Regarding iTunes, I think the reason you’re not featured is because you don’t have people subscribe to the podcast within the iTunes Music Store. By just providing the XML, and having people count it manually, the Music Store doesn’t know how many people are downloading the podcast and therefore gives no reason to feature it. Get added officially to the Music Store (which is easy to do) then put a “Subscribe Via iTunes” button on the blog, and hopefully the high numbers will attract the featured status.

  16. about the video edition, i’m finally on high speed and would LOVE to finally get to see it. I never got to download one when you used to do it.

I also think i’d be happy if, like Doug said, it was once in a while, or themed…

    ….go for it!!!

  17. “Did you take off time from beating your wife to come down here?”
    “I’m sure you’re a child molestor.”

What would they do if you just said ‘yes’?

  18. I was really excited about the video edition when you first did it. But I have to say that I havent missed it at all. The audio edition is more accessible and definately good enough. I’d be happy to see a special video edition now and again though.

  19. This can be a good bookend movie and accompany that new werewolf movie coming out John.Check it out…something to do with 2 tribes of werewolves fighting over a child thats supposed be important in some christ way…shrug who knows but sounds interesting.

  20. Video was cool. You could utilize it though. IE. not videotape you guys sitting down, but once in awhile, maybe once a month or so, mix it up where you did a show which took advantage of the video…

Enough with the MySpace ads already?

  21. The reason zombies don’t attack each other is because of the smell. The living obviously smell diffrent from the rotting corpse.

  22. I don’t know, come to think about the video edition, I like listening to you guys while doing other stuff on the computer. If it were a video edition I’d have to “watch” you or just minimize the window…

However I loved the video review of X-Men The Last Stand. It’s short, few scenes from the trailer and is just perfect.

  23. Wonderfully funny show as always…

Off the top of my head, i can’t think of a reason why you should do another video edition. I mean, you are just sitting there talking ain’t ya?

  24. If you think Scientology is gay, Jenna Elfman has some words for you: “What crimes have you committed?” “Have you raped a baby?”

I think Sarah Silverman said it first and best:

“Scientology is totally gay. Their slogan is, ‘Scientology, it’s like a party in your ass.'” ~Sarah Silverman

  25. yo, great show as always

i’ve been listening from way back & have never really been into the video stuff, i think the show works great as audio – as when you have done video editions there’s never really been anything to ‘watch’.

as Doug said maybe just do the video for specials…. a ukulele show perhaps…

  26. Robert E. Howard wrote the original Conan tales, there was not really an original novel as such they where published mainly in a short story magazine called “Weird tales” that H. P. Lovecraft also wrote for.

Boaz Yakin’s movie Fresh which he wrote and directed is AWESOME, a kind of urban set hybrid of a Yojimbo style storyline and Rumble Fish stylisation.
