Movie vs. Celebrity – Will you see MI:3?

Cruise-CouchOne of the recuring discussions that happens here on The Movie Blog and other film related websites is Celebrities how from time to time act like total asses. Maybe it’s Russell Crowe, perhaps it’s Ben Affleck… or maybe (as in today’s case) it’s Tom Cruise.

The question that is often raised by myself and others is “SHOULD HOW WE FEEL ABOUT A CELEBRITY EFFECT HOW WE VIEW THEIR WORK ON SCREEN?” The answer to that specific question is usually NO, it SHOULD NOT effect how we view their on screen work. However, in reality, even though we don’t think it SHOULD effect how we enjoy their films… the truth is that it often does. Regardless if it’s wrong or right… it’s the truth for many of us to one degree or another.

So here cometh May 5th, the wide release date for Mission Impossible 3. Personally I’m VERY interested to see how this flick does at the box office for one very simple reason: I want to see if Tom Cruise acting the one of the world’s biggest Jack Asses over the past year is going to negatively effect the general movie going audience’s desire to see the newest Cruise flick.

Will people have been so turned off by Cruise’s nonsense over the last little while that they’ll stay away from his film? Or will they separate Tom Cruise the idiot, from Tom Cruise the Movie Star who usually turns out pretty enjoyable films?

My opinion? I think it’ll be somewhere in the middle. I expect MI:3 to take about $40 million opening weekend. That’s a good number… HOWEVER… I also think if Cruise had just kept his mouth shut the past 18 months this film would have opened with $60+ million EASY.

So let’s see what happens. Will you go see MI:3? What are you predictions?

  1. I might see the movie considering I have seen the first two, but on the other hand I dont really like Tom Cruise, he is getting very anoying latley. If I do see this movie It will be to catch up from the first two.

  2. john

looks like you were right. bo numbers for mi3 are quite low. and the people who know these things say the pic won’t have legs. with poseidon and da vinci coming up it doesn’t look great for mi3 right now

  3. I will probably go see it, because I love spy movies, the MI-series has all the cool gadgets, and the freakin RottenTomatoes is giving it stellar ratings. But, my GF has already said she’s ambivalent about it because Cruise is turning into a creepy jackass. I can’t argue that point. I’ve liked him since the Porsche scene in Risky Business, but he is turning into a freak. Or maybe he was always that way and it is just becoming more publicized.

I wish it starred someone else so I wouldn’t feel guilty for lining his
pockets, but now I can’t imagine anyone else in the Hunt role…

  4. current line (saturday morning) is 50 for the weekend. agree, though – would have done better if tc wasn’t so freaky. i’ll one up you. i think mi3 could have opened with as much as 70 if tc hadn’t marginalized himself over past year

ps – okay, here’s a tidbit. someone i work with had a huge crush on tc. it was one of those jokey things (not i want to have his baby). she’s really just a fan that thinks he’s handsome. anyway – now she thinks he’s a total weirdo. like – ‘i wouldn’t want to be in a room alone with him’ kind of thing. that’s quite a turnaround — and it’s typical, i think. tc needs to cool his jets (however, it’s my guess that we’ve seen just the beginning)

this is the tip of the tip of the iceberg

  5. I agree with Lou. Philip Seymour Hoffman will be the only reason I see this movie, but I’m still not gonna run to the theaters to see it. Let’s just hope Hoffman kicks Cruise’s ass.

  6. I’ll rent it someday when its out on DVD. And me hating Tom and his beliefs, which I do, is only part of it. The main reason I don’t want to see it, let me rephrase, think its worth spending ten bucks a ticket on to see in the theater, is I didn’t like the first two very much.

  7. I will see it only because I am a fan of both JJ Abrams and Philip Seymout Hoffman. But it makes me angry that I have to see this movie in spite of Cruise; if it were just him, I’d either wait to Netflix it or just pass. I can’t wait to see how Abrams does in his big screen debut, though!

  8. I will see it for one reason – Philip Seymour Hoffman. I hear his character kicks Cruise’s character Hunt’s ass all over the screen. If it was not for that I would skip this.
