Spider-Man 3 The Death of Mary Jane

Elizabeth BanksElizabeth Banks (Bookstore girl from 40 Year Old Virgin) is a hot as a Nuclear fire. I can’t wait to see her new one Slither this week. However, Elizabeth is also in Spider-Man 3 reprising her role as the secretary of J. Johan Jameson… and according to her… perhaps another love interest for Peter Parker?

Our friends over at Cinescape give us the following:

Banks told MTV, “I do definitely sort of explore a little bit more of my relationship with Peter Parker.” She noted the groundwork is being laid for a Peter-Betty relationship much like the office romance they shared in the comics. “Peter Parker — he actually is Hugh Hefner,” she jokingly added.

Banks also noted, “They’re really exploring the dark side of power, the power a superhero has. Do you use it all for good? That’s the question. That’s the main theme of the movie.”

You know… a few Audio Edition episodes ago we talked about the possibility of them killing off Mary Jane. This is looking more and more like a possibility to me for the following reasons (although I admit these “reasons” are shaky… just play along with me):

1) The supposed plot outline for Spider-Man 3 floating around (see it here) mentions that someone close to Peter dies in the film

2) The above quote by Elizabeth Banks

3) The fact that they’re bringing in Gwen Stacy

Add all that up and to me… it looks like they could be setting the stage for a Mary Jane funeral. I don’t REALLY think that’s what is going to happen… but there is a chance. Your thoughts?

  1. MJ is going to say yes in the movie becuase………….In the comics she left becuase she didn’t like Pete being Spidey……..but the variation in the movie is she wants him to be Spidey………so yea…….

  2. Mj DOESN’T die becuase….she said that if Tobey Mcguire and Sam Raimi come back for the 4th film…she will reprise her role…..DUH….

  3. HOW COULD THEY POSSIBBLY KILL HER. IT WOULD NOT BE FAIR TO PETER IN THE MOVIE. HIS LOVE WOULD DIE. SHE IS ALSO AN IMPORTANT PERSON.

MJ, YOU CAN COUNT ON ME

  4. Has nobody out there ever read Amazing Spider-Man #181-183? This is the first time Peter asks Mary Jane to marry him and she turns him down and leaves the series for about five years. It is later revealed that she did this because she knew he was Spider-Man and could not handle the thoughts of marrying him. This is a helluva lot simpler a storyline than killing her. Kirsten’s contract is up – SO WHAT? Let MJ leave Peter for the next 2 or 3 movies, then if they want to bring MJ back for Spider-Man 7 or something, the character is there to be used. This leaves the door open for The Black Cat. Yes, this HAS TO HAPPEN, I don’t care what anyone else says. Sam would do her RIGHTEOUS in the movie, and everyone who is a Spidey fan knows it.

  5. In my opinion, MJ shouldnt be killed off. U dont hav to hav the movie be exactly like the comics. MJ may hav taken Gwen Stacys part but oh damn well. The Peter & MJ love story is part of what made the first two Spider-Man movies great. with no MJ, theres no basic storyline. Im sure they wont kill her off. Shes way too important to the story. She & Peter belong together.

  6. Ok…MJ isnt going to die in the movie….Gwen Stacy was Peter’s first love, but Mj is his true love…Gwen didnt get to live through Peters life…Mj did..thats the ultimate difference…MJ and Peter are going to fight in the movie and “break up” but that is the Symbiotes influence over Peter..once he sheds it to Topher Grace…Peter will make amends with MJ….As for who dies….the only three that are feasible are Aunt May, Harry, and Cap. Stacy.

Peter and MJ forever!…next summer is the 20th Wedding Anniversary…20 years!….that a first for any character who has been constantly published by marvel….Mr.Fantastic and Sue dont count because for a while there werent any FF comics being published (late 80’s/ early 90’s)..while spiderman has always been there.

  7. I can’t wait to see spider-man 3 but i heard peter and mj dump for some reason.I just hope they get back together in the end of the film.I also heard that anut may and harry osborn die.Im a bit upset to see aunt may go but harry annoyed me in spider-man 2.All he talked about was spiderman and now i hear that he’s going to be the green goblin.Well i think the film is going to be fantastic when it comes out.

  8. all i have to say is that you guys have to stop thinking comics and start thinking what is capable of happening keep on watching the movies over and over and they’ll be clues its possible that harry is going to be the hob-goblin because his dad was the green-goblin and he will of course look for revenge because he swared to god that he will make spider-man pay for what he did to his dad besides harry lost the girl of his life because of peter and its pretty sure that he might turn sighco because of his dad spiret and harry found the green thingy that showed that it was his dad that was the green goblin and for the memory of his father (besides the hob-goblin look so much a like)he will become the second GOBLIN which is the hob-goblin so far the people that have made the movie’s spider-man are some how different from the cartoon and the comics oh and besides mary jane cant die because she is one of the mane characters spider man wouldn’t allow it

  9. i think that anyone who wants to kill off mj should be smacked it is the kind of romantic twist that keeps the fans on the edge of there seats if they killed off mj their would be no love story behind the whole spiderman series and no he cant find someone else because
they made it to where he has loved her for so long he cant just get over her plus he is also faced with the decision of telling someone else his secrete if he wouldnt tell the woman he loved what makes u think that he will tell another woman? spiderman just wouldnt be the same without mj

  10. Honestly loegreen had a good outline but I think that it is going to go something like this…..

Peter and MJ are having problems because of her demanding acting career and they have a split of sorts.(keep in mind that this is going to take place probably a year from the last one) Then he gets involved with gwen stacey at which point he becomes close with her father. Sandman and Hobgoblin(Which I don’t agree with at all because hobgoblin was actually harry osbornes shirnk in the comics who stole his fathers formula and used it on himself) and they take on spiderman together. these are the 2 main villians in the movie. Next Enter eddy brock hired by J Jonah Jameson for the sole purpose of snooping around for the reason why MJ dumped his son for Peter Parker. There is some kind of indrustrial accident and that is how “Venom” gets into spidey’s suit and later in the movie moves into Eddy Brock. And thus you have your main villian for Spiderman 4. The Questions you should ask though are….

1 who will kill captain stacey since Doc Ock is dead?
2 how will gwen stacey die?
and 3 when will lizard get into the mix?

MJ wont die because Kirsten Dunst said in an interview that I just read recently that if Tobey and Sam jump on for a 4th movie that she would too.
Anyway there is my 2 cents but honestly we won’t know until the movie comes out and bet your ass I will be waiting in line to see it because it will be great either way.

  11. Sandman story, Peter vs Harry story, Venom-Eddy story… and love story. Too much, so this is my theory (or at least what I hope for).
It starts with sand man attaking a bank or something. And spiderman chasing him arround, you may see a flash back of his story and him and his wife fighting.
You see Peter and MJ fighting also (she doesn’t like the super hero stuff).
Now check it out, you can have Eddy be in love with Gwen… why not? in Ultimate Spider-man they had a encounter and I do belive Sam is getting some ideas from U Spider-man.
Venom-Eddy is got to be like the absolute oposite of Spiderman-Peter.

And Harry… Harry is the Hobgoblin and also oscorp could just create the Venom suit. After a fight in oscorp with Harry Peter could get the costume (by accident).
Spiderman defeats Sandman with his new suit nearly killing him and then takes it off, now Eddy’s got it (he’s been following Spiderman to get photos). Venom trys to Kills Gwen, Harry in his glider comes to rescue her… but she dies.
So the big team up: Venom vs Sandman + Hobgoblin + Spiderman.
Venom takes out Spiderman to fight by themselfs and Spiderman wins, Venom dies.
Harry goes crazy, ends up in a hospital.
    Peter proposes to MJ
Sandman off to jail but his wife waits for him.

There you got another marvel universe posibility…

  12. Making movies of comics, are to open door for new ideas. We all know how the comics and cartoon goes. That’s why they do stuff like this, to shake things up. To make us say, “That wasn’t suppose to happen”. And then that’s going to bring alot of attention, and MONEY to the film. So killing MJ would only bring attraction. And will have everyone wondering what will happen in Spiderman 4.
So as far as sticking with the comics, don’t you think they blew that, when everyone? in spiderman 2 found out Peter’s identity.

  13. This whole thing is stupid.

Actors blab on and on about what they’re gonna be doing in their next big flick, and it’s all lies. If i had record of all the times an actor has lied like that in an interview, i’d have a billion. Betty’s not gonna be a love interest. MJ won’t die. Gwen isn’t even going to be a main character. They will stick to the harry/peter conflict so apparent in the second movie. I think they’ll only make 4 movies and probably have a different actor for MJ in 4. You guys are getting so into something that doesn’t need to be explained any further.

  14. I don’t see it really happening but the more you guys talk about it the more I think it would be a good idea and am more than happy to see Peter end up with Gwen Stacy. I still read the comics and Peter would definetely take Gwen over MJ any day, no question.

    See ya MJ

  15. Shadow have you watched the movies?

Peter and Gwen Stacey were an item before MJ came on the scene. Like John said, Raimi has selectively rearranged the comic book history as he deems necessary to service the movies. Dunst is on record as not being interested in doing anymore Spiderman after this. What does Raimi do? Bring in Gwen Stacey. The direction Raimi is heading seems obvious.

    Bye MJ.

  16. No, Mary Jane doesn’t die in the comic books, but neither is she his only love interest throughout his adventures. Gwen Stacy was his first love interest and Goblin threw her off a bridge (sound familiar) and she died.

In the movies, MJ has already been playing the basic role of Gwen Stacy, so it doesn’t really strike me as a bad idea that they go ahead and kill her. It would be an interesting new spin on the story.

Also, in the comic, Spider-man had romances with Betty Brant and the Black Cat (didn’t I hear a rumor that Felicia Hardy was going to be in this movie, too?). I think there were a couple of others, too.

As far as Peter’s love life goes, there is a lot of unexplored territory that killing Gwen would open up.

  17. Hey Shadow,

Yes, Mary Jane never dies in the comic book… but so what? Goblin never dropped her from a bridge in the comic book either… but Raimi did.

I think (just my opinion) killing off Mary Jane will be better for the movie. Raimi already showed he doesn’t feel the need to 100% stilck with the comic book (which is a good thing).

WILL he hill her off? I don’t know… but I think it would be good for the series to do it.

    Cheers!

  18. Do you people actually read the comic books? MJ never died in the comic. And yes, she ends up getting married to Peter Parker and shares his life’s ups and downs as Spiderman. That’s what makes Spiderman different and unique from other comic book heroes in the sense that he only has one love interest throughout his adventures and that is his wife, MJ Parker.

  19. One thing is sure- I don’t want MJ to bite the dust.

But, y’know…here is so many times the main villian can kidnap Mary Jane in the climax of the films. There’s your trips to the well. If Dunst des not return…leave her out for 4, recast in 5.

  20. Its a given. Dunst said she only wanted to do three. Even if its a bargaining ploy looks like Raimi has taken away her leverage. Dunst is gone and my money is on Bryce Howard’s – Gwen Stacy to fill the void. Betty Brant is second choice.

  21. I’d rather them get rid of Parker’s aunt. She gives me the goddam creeps every time she comes on the screen. But, having said that, I do think killing off Mary Jane is a smart idea, because she just keeps on slowing ol’ Spidey down. With her out of the way he can focus more on killing baddies than his sometimes confusing feelings for MJ. Ouch.

  22. Have MJ go missing. Abducted by Venom perhaps. Maybe Carnage. Everyone thinks she’s dead, including Peter. Then whenever they decide to end the Spider-Man series, Parker defeats *insert villain here* and is re-united with MJ. It’d be the perfect ending to the franchise. MJ is his dream girl, the girl he wanted all his life. He eventually got her, then had her taken away. What better way to finish the series of movies than to have him finally get back the first girl he ever loved.

That way, we get Dunst out of the way and then all we’d need is a cameo from her at the very end to bring us full circle and give us the happiest of happy endings.

  23. It makes sense to kill her off. Where else can they possibly go with the Peter/MJ arc? What, are they gonna get married? No. Is she gonna become a sidekick like in that Zorro sequel? Doubtful. Superhero movies always have to have some kind of romance. The Betty thing makes sense. It would be pretty hard to set up Gwen Stacey as one of Pete’s best buddies and then kill her off in the space of one movie. It could be done, but killing MJ would have more of an effect.

Another thing. Betty as a love interest? Would Peter really be hitting on the secretary while he’s mourning the death of his girlfriend? Maybe that suggests that MJ dies really early on in the movie? Could be a cool little hook into the story, the attention-grabbing opening. That’d be awesome.

  24. Holey crap! I didn’t even realize Banks was the same person from Spiderman to 40-Year Old Virgin! Talk about a great costuming job in Spiderman. She was smokin hot in 40-YOV and I sure wouldn’t mind seeing more of her and less of Dunst in the Spiderman series!

  25. If Sam stays true to the comic book in this movie, then I really can’t see MJ dying. Gwen died in the comic books, I don’t see why they would not kill her off in this movie. MJ dying would be in my opinion a bad thing. She does not die in the comic books. killing MJ off does not stay true to the comics. Maybe killing her off and then brining her back to life will work(like in the 90’s cartoon) but killing her off in the movie? Thats just stretching away from comic books too much. You can’t have Clark without Lois, you can’t have Katie without Tom :p and you cannot have Peter without MJ.
