Slither Reviews

The early Slither reviews are out, and they’re even better then I expected them to be. To me, this film just looks like a LOT of fun… and not to mention its got Elizabeth Banks (Campea) in it too… which is enough to get me to just about any theater on the planet.

Here’s what some of the critics are saying in their early Slither reviews:

“A gleefully nasty and ingeniously twisted horror-comedy.”
Joe Leydon, VARIETY

“So sue me, sometimes after a day of enjoying Belgian film-festival prizewinners, I like to relax with copious servings of horror-flick slime and a good visual joke involving squids, girls in bathtubs, and overhead cameras.”
Lisa Schwarzbaum, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

“A groovy gross-out with snorts, scares and sentiment, SLiTHER is thus far the must-see frightfully funny movie of the year.”
Staci Layne Wilson, HORROR.COM

“It may not be sickly brilliant or twistedly clever, but it’s just plain fun. Slither is a good old fashioned gooey, slimy monster movie with a sense of humor.”
Fred Topel, ABOUT.COM

As of this moment, Slither is carrying an impressive 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I expect that number to get larger as more reviews come out. This one is the #1 priority for me on Friday. Look for my review on the weekend.

  2. I was so excited having read the various claims from critics etc but this is without doubt the WORST film I have ever seen. No plot, not even remotely funny and quite simply boring…for those expecting something similar to Shaun of the dead im afraid you are going to be rather disappointed….doesnt even come close.

  3. OH MY GOD, how can I describe this film. 1 word I could use is RUBBISH! Another word would be GARBAGE! Do NOT pay good money to see this pile of CRAP, it is terrible, brutal, BAD!!

Who on earth ever thought up this “plotline”, oh, sorry, there isn’t a plotline as its all been seen and done many many times before, its BAD.

To think people have said this is a good, sleek, funny film, who are they?? Are they getting back handers from the makers to say all this, as if I had been the one critiquing the film I would give it 0 – 10, its just god awful.

Thank you for showing me that there are films out there that really are NOT worth watching……Jeez!!!

  4. Alright, this movie brought back fond memories from the heyday of horror. (“night of the creeps”, “shivers”, “society”) There was much more gore than I expected compared to the impression I got from the trailer. Tons of fun.

  6. This movie sucks. I thought it was going to be good cause of the rating of 4 stars of out 5. It wasnt a good movie at all. Sorry to dissapoint you people but this movie doesnt have a plot to it. If you wanna sit through a boring movie, go see that one. I think think this one is more boring then gigli which won most boring movie.

  7. I stand corrected, John. I had thought Universal han’t advance screenings despite Slither’s earlier appearances at a number of festivals (such as the one mentioned by EW) ; if the film hadn’t been screened, there is no way it could get a 80+ % at RottenTomatoes.

But for some reason “ET” skipped right over it in last night’s telecast giving attention to the other films opening, including a film with Michael Keaton that had a limited release; when I left the comment, there were almost no advance reviews for Slither.

Will I see it? Probably. Hell, a few year ago I sat through “Eight Legged Feaks” and laughed away every minute of it. What’s good for the goose has to be good for the gander.

  8. I saw “Slither” last night and loved it. It delived exactly what it promised to do. The cast was uniformly excellent, the dialogue was sharp and the effects were top notch.

Darren is right though, this could have been called “Night of the Creeps Version 2.0”. All it needed was some gratuitous nudity and Tom Atkins. It’s a shame this movie isn’t available on DVD.

“I got good news and bad news girls. The good news is your dates are here.
    What’s the bad news?
    They’re dead.”

    from “Night of the Creeps”

  9. By the way, Brayden, the 1986 B film directed by Fred Dekker is about a can of slugs from outerspace which crash lands in the 50’s. It infects a few locals who are then frozen by cryogenics. Then during “plege week’ in 1986, a couple of smart ass college kids unfreeze the infected bodies, the slugs multiply and when they infect the campus, they turn people into the walking dead. But the zombies only wish to infect people with more multiple slugs. They incubate in your brain. Besides guns, only fire can truly destroy them.

There are also comical and moments of high camp, and references to horror filmmakers/films throughout.

While it isn’t essentially the same story, in my mind, slugs from outer space + causing zombies + more slugs coming from the infected + camp humor has a bit too much in common. In fact, when I learned more about the film, I thought it was a loose remake. It isn’t, at least according to Slither director James Gunn – he viewed the film after completing his. But it does seem to draw MANY comparisons.

Surprisingly, even though preview audiences seem to be high on Slither, guess what Universal decided not to do this weekend?

Can John Campea say “No advance screenings for critics?”

  10. All praise “Night Of The Creeps : The Sequel to the 1986 B Movie”!!!

Oops, wrong movie. I thhought this film was about slugs from outer space that enter people, turn thier brains to mush and turn them into zombies…with a campy sense of humor.

    All hail “Slither!”

  11. John, I’ve said it before and I say it again – your wife Elizabeth is freakin SMOKIN HOT.

I will wait with anticipation to see how you dispose of her lover Max Handelman. Then, maybe you can post noodies of her. Hehe.

  12. All hail James Gunn!

This is gonna kick ass, but considering it’s very anti-mainstream, critically acclaimed and stars the great Nathan Fillion I expect it to unfortunately pull a “Serenity” and fail at the box office. To what you ask? Something shatty, I assume.
