TV – Avatar: The Legend of Korra Announced

While The Last Airbender is getting torn up by the critics and struggles to edge out its production budget and promotional costs, the rabid fans of the series were denied another taste of the 3 season series now in syndication.

But there is still hope. There is… another…

Avatar: The Legend of Korra is a new Nic series announced today that will continue in the world of the Last Airbender with a new hero and a new story 70 years after the original animated series finished.

ToonZone shares the official release:

Nickelodeon, the number one producer of television animation in the world, has greenlit a new series from the creators of the hit animated TV show Avatar: The Last Airbender, it was announced today by Brown Johnson, President, Animation, Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group. The new series The Legend of Korra (working title), from creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, will premiere on Nickelodeon in 2011, continuing the evolution of the animated franchise and its mythology. The original series was the inspiration for the Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies live-action epic adventure, The Last Airbender, which has already grossed more than $115 million at the box office to date.

“Mike and Bryan have imagined a compelling new story inspired by the Airbender mythology that they so brilliantly crafted when the TV series began,” Johnson said. “This new avatar is not only a girl, but also hot-headed, independent and ready to take on the world.”

The Legend of Korra takes place 70 years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender and follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang – a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra. With three of the four elements under her belt (Earth, Water, and Fire), Korra seeks to master the final element, Air. Her quest leads her to the epicenter of the modern “Avatar” world, Republic City – a metropolis that is fueled by steampunk technology. It is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive. However, Korra discovers that Republic City is plagued by crime as well as a growing anti-bending revolution that threatens to rip it apart. Under the tutelage of Aang’s son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training while dealing with the dangers at large.

I was late to the game getting to Avatar, but my wife and kids started watching it in its entirety and I was sucked in.

I like that they are leaping ahead, a trend I wish more shows and movies would take instead of rebooting. And that they are tying this together with a new character, and a whole new conflict.

So for those Airbender fans that were craving more, but let down by the film adaptation, there is a new series coming out to feed that fandom.

This is good news indeed.

  1. Awesome, wonder if there’s a little prince zuko “rightful heir to the throne” with the son of aang.

so happy to hear the series continues on

  2. Count me as one who wouldn’t mind another go at an Avatar movie… just, for heaven’s sake, don’t let M. Night write the damn script (and preferably keep him away from directing the movie). It probably won’t happen, but considering how bad it really was, the fact that it’s probably going to break even before all is said and done speaks to just how large a fanbase this franchise has. Make a *good* movie and, combined with the fanbase that already exists, it really could be a huge blockbuster. I don’t even think it has to be rebooted in order to do that…

    1. well said it just takes second movie to be made by a good director and it could save the third but make the second bad , … and dont bother making the third.

  3. Hmmm, I didnt think the movie was as bad as everyone complains about but I am glad that Avatar will continue in some form. The big problem of the movie for me was it was too short, once a Director’s Cut is released with the added footage I think it will go a long way in improving the feel of the movie.

Its hard to move on when you invest in a character like Ang, you have shared his trials and tribulations and wish to see it go on forever.

Here’s hoping I can invest in the new avatar and have the same enjoyment.

  4. I love love love the Avatar series. I feel selfish but I wish they would have continued the adventures of Aang and how he handles young adulthood.

  5. oh man i started watching the tv series and im sucked in also, not only does avatar:the last airbender tv series have good action but it’s really emotional and when u talk about complex characters it delivers, what have i been missing all these years since the show came out.

  6. HEaring this news has me so stoked now. My mind is coming up with so many ideas and theories as to what to expect. Can’t wait till this premiers on Nick. I first hated the show, but then my sister and my kid nephew got me hooked.

  7. Well there wouldn’t be Korra without Aang dying… sooo…. I’m sure they’ll have flash backs of Aang when he’s a grown man and a old man. And his son?!?!?! So that means, he probably ended up with Katara!!

I hope they show flashbacks of all the characters from the previous series, all grown up. Maybe even have some characters be in their old age. Like Toph, Katara and Sokka.

    Im super excite!

    1. Well, Aang could have a son without ending up with Katara…being with Katara is not to only way Anng could end up with a son. (The end of the series did imply, though, that they did end up together – fret not! ;D )

Also, I imagine that Avatar Aang will probably make cameos as a spirit advisor to Korra, along the same lines as Avatar Roku during A:TLA.

  8. I like this idea, but think maybe they should have gone a little further out in time. 70 years is not long, considering the series usually spoke in spans of hundreds of years. Plus, I would think the Avatar would live a little longer than the average person, so Aang should still be alive in 70 years (he was what 15 at most, but probably closer to 13). If they went 200 years in the future it would be more beliveable also because the whole steampunk thing needs time to grow from a new discovery to something slowly taking over the world.

    1. They didnt say Aang wouldn’t be present, just that it would be his son who is training her.

Maybe old Aang will make appearances to pass on Wisdom to his grown son. Aang himself would be around 92 years old and there is nothing suggesting the Avatar has a longer life span from what I saw.

      1. Not huge into Avatar at all, only seen a couple episodes and heard some basic lore…

That being said (from what I’ve heard) isn’t each avatar a reincarnation of the last or something? So wouldn’t Aang have to be dead for a new avatar to exist?

      2. I am for certain Aang would be dead. Like they said in the animation the cycle continues through avatars if aang was still alive there would not be a new avatar therefore aang must be already be deceased if “Kora” is the new avatar :)

I LOVE IT!! i’m so excited for a whole new series!

    2. Aang could have died in an awesome battle, natural disaster (like Avatar Roku) or an accident perhaps. And 70 years is plenty enough time for heaps to change technology wise. Look at how far we have come since 1940. We come from typewriters to PDA’s and from black n white movie reels to in-home LED 3D TV. I have no problems with the timeline and I’m personally pumped for heaps more characters and bending.

  9. people don’t sleep. and don’t let the movie turn you away. the original material (Avatar The Last Airbender) is AMAZING!!!! Truly at the upper echelon of my list of T.V shows/experiences.

the fact that the creators of the original are creating this AND still relating/tying it with the original three part series is fantastic news. i for one cannot wait for this.
