The End of James Bond?

How far is James Bond 23 from actually being made? It appears it’s really far; almost “dead” far…

* 2006’s Casino Royale made an estimated $594 million worldwide ($167 million domestically).

* 2008’s Quantum of Solace made an estimated $586 million worldwide ($168 million domestically).

IGN states:

EON Productions suspended active development on the next sequel in April due to MGM’s ongoing financial crisis. But now, if reports from across the pond are to be believed, the project — which was to have been directed by Sam Mendes from a screenplay by Peter Morgan — has been scuttled altogether.

British tabloid The Mirror claims to have “confirmed the movie has been axed – and it could be years before the secret agent with a licence to kill is back on the big screen.”

The paper quotes an unnamed “insider” as saying, “Members of the production crew have been told the Bond film has been canned. There is a lot of bad feeling as a lot of time, money and hard work has already gone into this.”

I find this news quite surprising. I mean, Casino Royale is my favorite James Bond movie and Quantum of Solace wasn’t bad. Yes, I was a little disapointed with it because the plot sucked. But both of them made lots of money, and Craig has been awesome as Bond. So I really don’t get why Bond 23 is so far off. I guess we’ll have to wait and see…

What do you guys think? Do you want a James Bond 23 directed by Sam Mendes? Do you still want Craig as Bond?

  1. Bond will never end in any way shape or form… Its too popular and worth way too much money… And James Bond is the coolest Spy/Hero ever made into a movie series… So no one is willing to let it end… But to be honest they will have to find new Producers someday, cause Brobra Broccoli and Micheal Wilson will someday be too old to make anymore Bond films… But for now they are just going to keep making Bond films as best as they can and make them as good as they can… Cant wait for SKYFALL to come out next year… Its going to be so awesome, looks like its going to be the Best bond film that has and will ever be made… :)

  2. I too liked Bronson as bond and was sad to see him go. As for Craig he’s alright as bond, but not up there with Connery,Moore,or Bronson. I think though that someone will get the rights and like at the end of every Bond movie bond will return.goldeneye IMO is the best bond movie, well it’s tied with from Russia with love.

    1. Can´t we just state that the guy who played Bond before Daniel Craig is named Pierce Brosnan!!! Not Bronson…… but it would be kind of cool to see Charles Bronson portray Bond…. or not!

Anyways the rights to the Bond movies and the whole franchise are worth alot of dollars so i guess that some one will cough up the dough to get things rolling again. And if Daniel is wrapped up in David Finchers new movie based on a trilogy of books by the swedish author Stieg Larsson, we may have to look for a new Bond once again.
But i would like to see them wrapping up this movie since it´s tied in with Casino Royale and Quantum.

….Best Bond villain: Kamal Khan in Octopussy

  3. personally if this is true it saddens me greatly. Peter Morgan is one of my favorite screenwriters and not much bad can be said about Sam Mendes either and Craig is gold as bond. It seems like a great creative team.

  4. I seriously doubt Bond is in this much trouble.
Let’s say this news is spot on.

Answer: MGM bites a bullet and sells of the rest of the rights to SONY who co-produced the previous two films.

Also -and folks will hate me for bringing this up- but hey, James Bond has been recast before. If Bond doesn’t come back for three to four years and Craig has lost interest, yes, it will be a loss. But someone will step in his shoes and drink the martini shaken not stirred, right?

But overall? I think it’s a bunch of hooey.

  5. Yeah gutter press with exclusive story shocker, I’d take that with a pince of salt to be honest as I’d imagine another studio would jump all over this if it became available to them. I mean its Bond for god sake’s.

  6. To be fair, it is “The Mirror” that is reporting this news, and while MGM’s financial troubles are hardly news, what the rag like The Mirror reports tends not to be based on facts.

    Just sayin.

  7. This is extremely disappointing news. Words fail me. Sadly, we should have seen this coming. MGM’s been in horrible shape for decades. It was only a matter of time before even a hit Bond franchise reboot couldn’t prop them up anymore.

    1. I am holding out hope that since the “source” is a gossip tabloid with an unnamed insider, that this isn’t entirely accurate.

MGM might fold, someone else will buy the rights and Bond will live on somewhere.

Agreed. The Bond franchise will get run into the ground and abandoned (and probably revived in the future) before its just left out to pasture to fade away. That franschise has made way too much money for someone not acquire it and continue making even bad movies based on it.

But as for Bond himself I’m still partial to Brosnon. All seriousness aside what really needs a good kick in the pants are the themes for the movies. The Casino Royale theme was okay but was missing just a little something to really hit (Quantam was just horrible) and Bronsnon’s last go at it (Madonna’s “Die Another Day”) was terrible IMO.
