Review: Repo Men

Thanks for checking out our Repo Men review.

Genre: Action Sci-fi
Directed by: Miguel Sapochnik
Staring: Jude Law, Forest Whitaker, Alice Braga, Liev Schreiber
Released: March 19th, 2010

In the futuristic action-thriller Repo Men, humans have extended and improved our lives through highly sophisticated and expensive mechanical organs created by a company called The Union. The dark side of these medical breakthroughs is that if you don’t pay your bill, The Union sends its highly skilled repo men to take back its property…with no concern for your comfort or survival.

Forest Witaker and Jude Law kick some major ass in this sci-fi thriller. Seeing these guys do their job is morbidly amusing, but as the predictable turn of events has one of their top bounty hunters the recipient of their overpriced product he is now changed from hunter to the prey. But that’s mostly all we get out of this movie is some action and some loose storyline to bring the action on.

Inspired strongly (aka ripped off) from the stage musical Repo: The Genetic Opera, this sci-fi thriller presents the ethical question of scientific advancement vs human rights. Its a basic theme that gets lost in the action of sticking it to the man in the lightly veiled sense of redemption.

The message is lost in all the fluff and we are left with some good action scenes.

With the Heath Care Reform taking its first stride forward this past weekend, I had to think there was some irony that this film presents a very real parallel of the business of health care in the United States. While people are treated like financially traded commodities instead of having their ailments attended to, this movie shows an extreme of that line of thinking.

But things go splodey and boom instead of getting even a little thought provoking.

I give a 5 out of 10

    1. I’m with Kristina. I absolutely loved it, and only because of the ending – it totally changed the film for me. Up until that, it was a decent, enjoyable, futuristic action-flick, but the ending was stunning and a complete game changer.

  1. I saw it, thought Forest and Jude were great, didn’t really like her but it was okay none the less. Pretty cliche but the ending was pretty cool. A few scenes were trying to be a bit to artsy for my tastes like when they are scanning organs but its still worth watching, average rental. I give it a solid 5.

  2. Just watched this last night, and it does alright as an action flick. My biggest disappointments come from a couple areas: 1) the need to kill people for their organs when all of the transplanted parts are mechanical and not organic; 2) the rip-off of Total Recall. That was a bummer.

Still, fun and relatively enjoyable, and THANK GOODNESS the limited use of “shakey cam”!!! I’d go to a 6.5 on the rating.

  3. I actually enjoyed the trailers to this one and a rating of 5 out of 10 is kind of disapointing.
Anyway I look forward to watching Jude Law bring some matrix upon us and hope that I will not be sorry I watched it even if you warned me about it :D
