Cohen hopes to Direct Monster Squad Remake

Looks like Rob Cohen is dusting off a movie he once produced in hopes of directing a remake of Monster Squad!

Deadline shares:

Rob Cohen, who produced the original, hopes to direct the remake. Cohen will produce with Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form, and they’re meeting with writers.
A group of kids who worship the classic monsters suddenly discover that Dracula is in town, and he’s got his pals Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, The Gill Man and The Mummy with him. The kids must stop their efforts to find an amulet that will give the creatures control of the world

I have no problem with the film getting remade. It qualifies by TMB’s 4 Rules Before Making A Remake

Its got a good story. Kids fighting monsters? How can you go wrong with that?
Majority of the Current audience hasn’t seen the Original And while this might be a cult classic of the 80s, the grand majority of people under 30 don’t know what this was.
At least 20 years old? 23 and counting. Check.
Story would benefit from a modern retelling I don’t see why not. The premise is pretty light to begin with, but to update it with a group of kids that would appeal to todays teens would be cool too.

I don’t know that you could remake this film with or without this scene:

To copy it would seem cheap, but to leave it out would be blasphemous.

  1. I just revisited this flick this Halloween. It was a real crowd-pleaser. I would be all for a remake, but not in the hands of Michael Bay. If you’ve not seen the original, check it out. It’s a poor man’s Goonies, but it still rules.

  2. Yes, I think I am the one person in the world who is under 30 and has this on dvd :) “Wolfman’s got nards” was a great one-liner that I still yell out to this day. The laughs have definitely died down because no one remembers this flick. I think a remake is amazing and agree that I hope it isn’t bogged down with cgi. Think they would consider 3D? By the time it comes out, everything will probably be in 3D.

  3. For the life of me I cant remember this one.

American WW in London was one of the greatest Tranformation scenes cause Landis did it the ol’ fashined way

  4. I vaguely remember this movie, I gonna have to find it and watch it again. I hope they just don’t spam the cgi effects for everything in the new film. Especially when it comes to the Wolfman transformation, to this day I think that “American Werewolf in London” has the best transformation scene ever.
