Spiderman will be The Hobbit?

Multiple sources are reporting Tobey Maguire will play Bilbo Baggins in the upcoming movie “The Hobbit”. I think this is pretty good news.

Here is a report from Newkerla:

The ‘Spider Man’ star will play the role of Bilbo Baggins in the blockbuster movie version of JRR Tolkein”s classic book.

According to the reports, producer Peter Jackson and director Guillermo del Toro
have been in talks with him for months, reports the Sun.

A source said, “The Hobbit team are deep in the casting process. Everyone is over the moon.”

“Tobey is not only one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood, he is also one of the best actors.”

And also Movies.UK

The 34-year-old actor – who last week quit the Spider-Man franchise shortly before filming was due to begin on its fourth instalment – is to play Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s movie adaptation of JRR Tolkein’s Lord Of The Rings prequel, according to The Sun.

Producer Jackson – who directed the Lord Of The Rings trilogy – and director Guillermo del Toro have reportedly had their sights set on Maguire for the role for months.

I think he looks the part, I am looking forward to this like no other. The shooting of the film will start in the summer with the story split into two movies, set for release in 2011 and 2012.

  1. I Think its bad news.. Sorry but I think Tobey is way over-rated as an actor. I think he lacks a bit of confidence and I dont think he has much range. Oh well that’s just me I guess…

The only movie I liked him in was Pleasantville but I think that character was made for him and he should stick to similar roles..

  2. For the sake of continuity, I would like to see Ian Holm continue with the roll, but I realize that he’s not getting any younger. Still, they can do wonders with cinematic wizardry. But I suppose Toby is as good a choice as any. He loosly resembles Elijah Wood so I guess from that point of view it will be “in the family”.

    1. I don’t know if he would be “much” better, but I do agree he’d be a little better. The thing is, though, The Hobbit is a very light-hearted, fun book — and I think Tobey can pull off light-hearted, fun a smidge better than McAvoy, whom I prefer in serious parts. Plus, McAvoy is a few years younger than Tobey, who himself would be very young to pull off the role. We shall see, though.

    1. Man I hope you are right. I really hope he isn’t Bilbo. I just don’t want to see him in a story that I love so much. It will be very distracting to me if he was Bilbo. Please find someone else!

  3. Works for me. Maguire and Woods are great at pulling off the innocent hero types, Frodo and Spidey that is. Maguire playing Frodo’s uncle at a young age to me is perfect.

Can’t wait and I am so glad they finally got that casting over with.

      1. We can only hope! That scene was great in Spider-Man 3. I loved it!

Seriously though, i think Tobey is a great fit. If anyone here has seen Brothers, you know he can play crazy really well. And i think when it gets down to it, when he’s obsessing over that ring, i think he’s gonna do a great job. I’m looking forward to it.

      2. Well- Bilbo doesn’t go all that nuts in the Hobbit- that’s more in the trilogy…

I saw Brothers and Maguire was phenomenal in it, but I don’t think he’s the right one for Bilbo. I think he’s convenient, and will make the film easier to sell- but I think it’s too much of an easy choice and not so much the right one.

  4. Ugh… I am well aware of Maguire’s acting talent, but for some reason this (potential) news is really disappointing to me.

If you look at the LOTR films, yes their choice for Frodo was a popular actor, but Merry and Pippen were both relatively unknowns at the time and were the perfect fits. I actually like them more than I like Frodo and Sam, which are the two more popular actors.

I just have the feeling that if this is true, I won’t be able to look at Bilbo without thinking of Peter Parker or Sea-biscuit… or that guy who freaks out in brothers.

To me picking pretty much the most popular qualified actor shows a lack of creativity, which, at this point in pre-production is a bit worrisome.

Also- they have Bilbo, Gandalf, and 13 or so Dwarves to cast, and that’s just the main ensemble. My guess is Maguire will be an expensive purchase, what does that mean for the rest of the cast??

    1. I completely agree. An unknown is what they need.

Despite popular opinion, I feel Tobey Maguire is garbage. Bilbo needs to be a jovial, life-of-the-party, reluctant hero. Instead we are going to get another moist-eyed, wooden performance from an over-priced actor.

      This sucks.

    2. My thoughts exactly. The first movie I remember seeing him in was Spiderman, after which I saw Pleasantville, Brothers and a few other things. And each time I thought “that is the guy that plays Spiderman, that is Toby Maguire.” It isn’t so much his face as his voice, and no amount of makeup will change that. I am not going to say that an unknown actor is the only choice, I thought James McAvoy was perfect for the role. But I am really not happy about this.

      1. I agree it’s hard to get past- Even in Brothers I was thinking to myself, “Jesus, Spidey is PISSED!”

No real opinion on McAvoy, I only ever noticed him in Wanted and he was just ok. Actually I just checked IMDB and saw he was Mr. Tumness in Narnia… I think now I would approve. Tumness ftw.
