Donner talks Wolverine 2 and First Class

Lauren Shuler Donner has been pimping her X-Men franchises to Empire Magazine again and tells us a little bit about the direction with Wolverine 2, and a puzzling look at First Class

First Showing quotes Lauren Shuler Donner talking about Wolverine 2:

“It’s actually the story we wanted to use for the first Wolverine film, but [Fox head honcho] Tom Rothman preferred to set the character up with an origin story first. What’s cool about this part of the saga is that Wolverine will be fighting in a different style to what we’ve seen before. Mariko’s father has this stick-like weapon, so Wolverine will have to fight against that. There’ll be samurai, ninja, katana blades, different forms of martial arts — mano-a-mano, extreme fighting.”

And again talking about First Class:

“We want it to be like the recent, darker Potters. It should not be a kiddie movie: we’re in the X-Men world so you can’t suddenly change the tone. The First Class comics are really fun — they’re funnier than any other comics I’ve read. Basically in each one the kids are fighting strange villains, sometimes it’s aliens, sometimes it’s monsters. I want to get a [taste] of that world.”

Now I am a little confused that she wants the film to be like the more recent darker Potter films, but admits you can’t suddently change the tone of the X-Men movies – which are not darker like the Potter films. But she is still pretty vacant about the real direction or plot of the film.

It seems the flip flopping on the roster (prequel stories like the comic or a next gen of X-men story) is still back to an early X-Men story with a younger cast members. Considering how some are not introduced until later we can only speculate that Scott, Jean, Hank and Ororo might be present. No Iceman or Angel.

  1. I’m still holding out for Havok and Polaris to round out the original line up, minus Iceman and Angel.
And it would be nice if Singer came back, but I think I’d rather see him work on Wolverine instead of First Class.

  2. X-MEN is a tired franchise already, Love Logan but ease off already, the last one was pretty cheesy and WHO THE FUCK cast a black eye pea in a superhero movie? Like Tony Montana said, Eh-SHOOT DAT PIECE OF EH-CHEET!

Rather see an Xavier and magneto flick

  3. Oh and most probably Tim Pocock will be Scott, I think he was lifeless in the Wolverine movie.
I just remember the good days when James Marsden[the most underrated actor in hollywood history] used to be Scott.

  4. I like the sound of what they are doing with Wolverine 2. Just that, like most everyone else I think, I hope they don’t screw it up this time.

About what she was saying on the First Class movie. They just need to rehire Brian Singer already to come in and make the X-Men movies worth while again. ;)

Or maybe even hire someone from Marvel to come in and show them how an X-Men movie really should be. ;P

  5. I like where Wolvie 2 is going however, I cant forget the huge mistakes made in the first orgin film and that makes me apprehensive. As for X-men first class I still like the idea but it be nice to have it at the same tone as the orginal films. No need for it to be “like Harry Potter” when the formula worked so good before. All the movie needs is a good script, cast and visionary directing. Singer has said he is intrested and he did make the first 2 X-men movies big hits. The studio be nuts to look for someone else.

  6. After doing some clicking I got to the page on empire that said “And we wanted an A+ writer, so we want to Chris McQuarrie (Valkyrie, The Usual Suspects). He came in and has tightened the story and got really immersed in the whole thing”

I wonder if Singer will direct.

  7. wolverine 2…sounds fun. i just gotta say 1 thing. GAMBIT. according to the original comic versions gambit and wolverine go back a long way and ar good buddies. so lets hope thers sum good cajun action too :)

    1. Well I like Gambit too, but he wasn’t in this story line from the comics, atleast I don’t think he was. So I’m more then okay if they don’t have Gambit this time around.

I heard they are looking at the possibility of doing an all Gambit film though.

  8. “samurai, ninja, katana blades, different forms of martial arts”, sounds like a cool idea but…..but, let’s get down on our knees and pray to God Almighty that Wolverine 2 turns out to be a good movie, well at least better than the first one.

And for first class[I never read the comics], Ellen Page should be back to reprise her role as Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat. After all, she was 1 of the 3 good things of X-Men 3.

    1. I do agree it would be cool to see Ellen Page come back as Shadowcat, it wouldn’t work.

In the X-Men movies everyone of the “original X-Men” were at least in their 30’s, even their too young looking and wasted Cyclops I think was suppose to be in his 30’s.

So they’re probably going back to at least when Cyclops was in his 20’s. Which their version of Kitty Pryde I think she was in her late teens or just getting into her 20’s. Thus in an X-Men First Class movie, sadly she would be way too young to be an X-Men at that point in time.

    2. The “First Class” didn’t include Shadowcat. The original XMen consisted of Marvel Girl, Cyclops, Iceman, Angel and Beast.

They will likely get as close to this as they can, with obvious changes with the movie timelines and ages.
