Reynolds Talks Good News about Deadpool Spinoff

Despite all the moaning and complaining about the train wreck that was X-Men Origins: Wolverine, there was a lot I did like in the film. Of course those were just shining side moments I wish I saw more of.

One of those shining moments was Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson, the mercenary who would become Deadpool. When talk of a spinoff featuring the character were rumoured, I was all in. But then as fast as those rumours hit, they faded. Now we get news that its still happening. And its good news.

HitFix quotes Reynolds:

“Well, I’m intimately involved with it. We’re just trying to break a story right now and figure out who the villain is going to be and all that stuff. But, it’s going to be just like the comic books. I’m gonna have a messed up face and you may see some flashbacks of Wade earlier in his life, but primarily what you see is what you get in the comics and that’s the goal. And there is no better place to draw material from then the comics which are incredible.”

This assurance right from the would-be Merc’s mouth is exactly what the fanbase wanted to hear.

I thought that Reynold’s portrayal of Wade Wilson was dead on. As I mentioned in my Wolverine review, Wade Wilson was awesome and Deadpool sucked.

The only hope they have is to reveal that the “Deadpool” in the Wolverine film wasn’t Wilson, and that Wolverine just presumed that it was.

I figure that somehow Wilson is inspired to use the name. Maybe he hears it and figures its a good codename to use since everyone thought that was him anyways. Fans are quick to disassociate the Deadpool name from Weapon XI and fast to point out that Weapon XI was not played by Reynolds, but rather Scott Adkins.

The biggest concern I am hearing is that Deadpool in the comics constantly breaks the fourth wall and addresses some of his jokes to the reader. I think if they handle it right they could have his own running dialogue and self narration be part of his mental break as he uses humour to overcome his disfigurement. It can be done, but they have to be careful with that part of the character.

Also recently, Katee Sackhoff was rumoured to be researching Typhoid Mary for a role and some speculated it would be for this Deadpool spinoff, however a script hasn’t even been finalized, but it is still a possibility.

  1. I figured out how in the spinoff how Deadpool can break the Fourth Wall and get away with it fair and square. It’s been staring at us in the face all this time.

I forgot ONE possibility. The more I thought about it, the more I think it’s possible.

    3D

Consider: mutant powers “whizzing” past an audience; exploding splinters of wood and glass; a sword in YOUR FACE!

How to break the fourth wall? You “break the THIRD WALL”.

    Rejoice! Celebration!

  2. it’s so simple, they cloned Wade because if you read the comics, Wade really can’t die a natural death like Logan and Creed (that’s the reason they were locked-up because shooting them doesn’t really kill them)

Wade can’t be poisoned and can survive even hundreds of years without eating or drinking water (as seen on recent CABLE comics) Weapon XI is in fact a clone, they just removed the mouth and combined all the powers on to it. i bet everyone here is familiar with Spider-man’s Clone Saga right? Ben Reilly and Peter Parker? oh and yeah, Kaine? Kaine looks exactly like Peter without his mask but his built and abilities are different, so they’re not the same person, hence; anything is possible and this theory would best fit the Deadpool Spinoff.

  3. My first question is whether this is going to be a Marvel movie or a Fox Film. If it is Fox we all know that it will be nothing like the comic, so every other discussion is moot as to staying canonical. If it is a Marvel movie I have higher hopes for the film.

As for the whole “How will they fix the Deadpool character” question. Who cares whether they fix it or not in the new movie so long as they stay true to the comic book Deadpool, Chalk it up as a re-boot for all I care, just get it right for once.

    1. Fox owns the rights to the character.

And who says that if Fox has it that it wont be similar to the comic book? They can still capture the essence of the character the same way they did for the XMen films.

It doesn’t have to be in line with canon to still have the same feel and personality of the character.

  4. My vote for the whole transition from Weapon XI Deadpool to the real Deadpool is this:
They dig up WXI’s parts, & send him to the camp where all the failed experiments go. They remove all his extra pieces, causing extreme disfigurement. He escapes, and begins work as the assassin we know and love. It ties flawlessly with the comics.
The story continues, and he is hired as part of a strike team. When one of the members, Slayback, goes nuts Wade kills him, leaves, and lives happily ever after. He finds a girl & makes friends with Weasel, his gun supplier. Slayback returns, kidnaps them both, and Deadpool is forced to kill him… again.

  5. There is that scene where Wade Wilson is on the slab, his mouth stitched up. So we know it is Wade at the end.

It seems reasonable that Stryker could also put the blame of the death of The General on Wilson/Deadpool (or another mutant?) but it got me thinking that nobody else was in that room with Stryker and the General except for…

I figure there can be a way for Deadpool/Wilson, no longer under Stryker’s control, to “burn off” the adumantium “eskirma” maybe melt them into swords or something.

Yes, there were some problems with Wolverine. You won’t catch me badmouthing it too much though. I don’t think it was a terrible film, but the excitement factor was underwhelming. If the film had been about Gambit’s escape, that might have been another deal.

As for Deadpool breaking the fourth wall, set in the X-Men universe, it’s not a jazzy idea. However, there are ways to get around it.

    * Surv. cameras/a POV of another character.

    * Character is telling a story to another character, thus events in adventure could be exaggerated.

    * Or like in most of Daredevil (the studio cut) where events are taken from the characters POV/perception of events.

    * A combination of all the above.

But that’s as far as I’d take it.

I suppose, as someone pointed out, that the “X-Men” films could be seen as only movies (as also suggested in X Men The Last Stand novelization) and “Deadpool” could have a different adventure not related to the X-films. His default “mask” in public would that be of “Ryan Reynolds”…

but that wouldn’t work. Fancy idea, but it would not work. Why?
Because that’s an X-Men reboot you are talking about. You’ll say I’m wrong. But if you think about it…if you have one character taken out of “the movie universe”, they all must follow.

So there isn’t really a break in the fourth wall, except in end credits. That’s it. But the “fans” will cry foul because of it

I don’t know—I think I’m starting to take Kevin Smith’s thoughts on these sorts of things. You know, how you can’t please the comics fans when it comes to films.

  6. Awesome, this is exactly what I wanted to hear. Marvel is taking a movie version Deadpool and making the character right. Why did they even call Weapon XI Deadpool in the movie, I thought that was so stupid.

Thanks for posting this Rodney and lets hope Marvel keeps going strong on making movie versions of their character’s the way they should be.

    1. Like most of the bad Marvel Films, they tried to pack as much in as possible and in the process screwed up the characters in the process.

Example: By the time the X-Men will form, Gambit will be about 36 whereas Rogue will be about 16.

    2. You do realize that he is presented as a late 20s early 30s character in the comics… and dates Rogue.

Kitty Pryde was 14 when she was dating Colossus who was portrayed well in his 20s

Rogue also had a romance with Magneto in the Savage Land (and was played on in the Age of Apocalypse)

Dating ages mean nothing in the comics.

  7. They don’t need to separate Wade from Weapon XI. He is Weapon XI. He was Weapon XI in the comics and in the movie. Striker called him Wade.

Deadpool (Wade) got his regenerative powers from the Weapon X project. This allows him to regenerate quickly and grow new limbs.

He has even survived his head being severed in the comics. Not just the movie. It did not grow back but it was reattached and it healed back on to his shoulders.

He also has the power of reanimation with his healing ability. Meaning he can come back from the dead.

As for his other powers. He is immune to Psychics. He can teleport and can change his appearance. Though the teleportation and holographic disguises are from devices. They could easily become part of the Weapon X experiment for the movie.

As for his baraka like weapons. When he attaches his head back to his torso and then “wakes up” he should be himself again. Only now deformed and a little more psychotic. He could dislike his new appendages and simply rip them out and go back to his dual katanas he likes so much. Since he can regenerate. That is a simple solution.

As for his laser beam eyes. I dunno. But they could say that having his head lopped off could of ruined his ability to use em. Maybe he could just not use em period. Like he doesn’t even know he has it.

Tying up these loose ends the way I described should allow them to pick up where Wolverine left off and still go into a brand new Deadpool.

  8. one thing im stoked about is that he says it will be what u see in the comics so that means no crappy xmen origins deadpool version plus he will be suited up mask and all then

    1. Mary is primarily a Daredevil character, but she has ties to Deadpool under the alias of Mutant Zero. If they just avoid calling her Typhoid Mary they can avoid infringing. Fox owns first dibbs on pretty much anything directly related to the XMen books, so they could scoop her up.

But I think she would be better suited for a Daredevil reboot/sequel.

  9. I think everybody was under the assumption of the Weapon XI ALT ending meant that Deadpool was still alive and there would be spin off movie. Or else why even have that Easter Egg?

  10. Didn’t stryker send him into combat with Wolverine before his treatment was finished? Maybe his new powers weren’t permanent as a result and they would all fade away and the healing factor would help to restore him.

  11. Well they pretty much confirmed it was wade for sure with that little post-credits extra when he looked at the camera and went “shhhhhh” (breaking the 4th wall) but I DO like your suggestion that he switched with someone- Cause that seems exactly like something Deadpool would do. “Hey Morph, buddy- the fuzz it coming, quick transform into me to throw them off!” *Runs*

    1. Pretty much agree that it was suppose to be Wade as Weapon XI in Wolverine and that final scene seals it for me.

“but how will they get rid of the baraka look?”

Deadpool retains some of Wolvies healing factor (like in the comics), the healing factor rejects the other powers that were added to him leaving him disfigured and a bit mental.

    2. And what about the cancer? I guess they’re ignoring that completely?

      So his origin goes from:

“I am a loudmouth mercenary with cancer and signed up with weapon X to cure it, got disfigured and messed up in the process”

      to:

“I am a loudmouth mercenary that signed up with weapon X to kill things, then I gained the ability to take people’s powers and got swords in my arms- then in a big fight with Wolverine and Sabertooth I lost all of my powers but somehow managed to hold onto my healing factor…and got disfigured and messed up in the process”

    3. He didn’t gain the ability to take people’s powers, they genetically altered him to have other powers.

Your presumption about his storyline is just random speculation.

    4. True enough, but he did have the other powers and they still have to explain why he lost all the others except the healing factor. Why keep that one? Why not laser eyes? Also- are they going to have him still able to teleport? He can in the comics, but it’s not a power it’s a gadget… so what, they remove the teleportation ability only to give it back to him? If not then he keeps his healing factor AND teleportation- but not the laser eyes or sword hands?

And of course it’s speculation- everything everyone says on these posts is until we get a plot synopsis from the producers.

  12. They screwed the character up, plain and simple. I think they meant for the Deadpool in the movie to be Deadpool, and since people hated what they did they will know back track and figure a way to say it wasnt him. Maybe it was a clone. I guess as long as they fix it the Deadpool movie could still be cool.

  13. I disagree about not tying it to Wolverine. The Marvel Universe has started to focus on keeping continuity, and breaking it because they screwed up the way they did would be another mistak.

If nothing else, they should try to explain stuff away. Maybe turn it into a joke or something…remove those silly arm sword things and have Deadpool say “yeah, those things were ridiculous.” or make a quip about it.

  14. Personally, I don’t think they have to explain anything about the Origins movie. I dont need closure from Origins, If I want closure I will wait for the next Wolverine movie if it happens and they can explain it then.

Let Deadpool stand on his own and dont try and tie the two together, will just complicate things really.

    Just my opinion

    1. They can start fresh and still keep it tied. Maybe Stryker thought it was Wade too and we find out later that Wade escaped after some teasting was done on him and he switches with another Mutant or something.

Wade was only in the movie for a short amount of time, but I would like to see them continue from THAT character, not this Weapon XI animal.

  15. What would be the point of showing deadpool reach for his head at the end of the movie if they would make a movie about a different deadpool? i can buy him be disfigured later on, but how will they get rid of the baraka look?

    1. I think you have it backwards. Why did they use a different Deadpool in Wolverine?? Weapon XI was nothing like Deadpool.

Or maybe Weapon XI will show up later, or be the villian.

Weapon XI was only Deadpool in name and had NOTHING to do with the actual character of the same name.

In the movie, the last we see of Reynolds is when he is in action with the Weapon X Team. Then later it is said that Wade is already dead, then we get to see Scott Adkins as Weapon XI, which everyone just assumes is Wade Wilson.

Reynolds said the character would be just like the comics version of the character, so what makes you think they would still use Weapon XI as Deadpool in a spinoff?

    2. I think Striker said it was Wde. I know he said something about shutting him up. If it wasnt Wade that wouldnt make sense.

Reynolds is just a actor, I woudlnt take his word for anything at this point.

The deadpool in the movie what they wanted deadpool to be, changing it now would just seem cheap.

Although it would be awesome if the movie started with Wade saying he had a talk with the writers and they have decided that the Wolverine movie never happened.

    3. striker finally found a way to shut you up.

Doesn’t wolverine say this to weapon XI?

if anything, they’ll say it was mimic, or some other mutant that can use multiple powers. and that wilson was in on it and just disapeared.

    4. I just hope the write around the Weapon XI character and do as you suggested. Wade switches with Mimic, and escapes.

If anything that would give us motivation to see Weapon XI in the Deadpool movie, who (if he has a personality) would have a clear reason to dislike Wade for switching with him after what they did to him.

    5. It is something that the character would do. It would be cool if they even had him mention that it was all a movie, just like he does in the comic, breaking the 4th wall. if it is going to be “just like the comic” there is an almost endless way that they can handle the deadpool movie. this should be interesting.
