Ving Rhames joins Willis in the Surrogates

Ving Rhames is going to be joining up with Bruce Willis in a Disney SciFi Thriller called Surrogates.

Yahoo says:

The Disney film, based on a graphic novel, is set in a world where humans live risk-free lives through robot surrogates that are eternally young, perfect-looking versions of themselves.

Rhames plays a charismatic cult figure who disdains the use of surrogates and tries to lead an uprising against the “new world order.” Willis plays a cop who, through his surrogate, investigates the murders of others’ surrogates.

Demolition Man meets the Matrix with a side order of the Island. That was my first instinct when I read this synopsis.

It should be neat to see the Utopian risk free world and then see some distant body factory where these bodies sit controlling their perfect doubles. Of course I would wait for the argument to be made that if you are as cool as Ving, of COURSE you would be an advocate for being yourself. What if you were Roseann Barr?? Willis always plays a good cop, or rather he always plays a cop well. So I look forward to more of him in this role.

Ving seems to be a perfect fit of the charismatic “be yourself” leader and I imagine that because it is Disney there will be some thinly veiled object lesson to be had, but still promisies to be interesting at the very least.

  1. Out of the 76 movies Bruno has been in (or about to be in), about 10 of them feature him as a military officer/cop/private investigator etc.

Outside the DieHard franchise (clearly his most famous roles) he really doesn’t play a cop often. He just does it very well.

I don’t know that I would say he is typecasting himself. He has proven beyond a doubt that he CAN play other roles. And he can do so very well.
