Ebert To Resume Writing

EbertIt looks like Roger Ebert is well enough to resume writing at the Chicago Sun-Times. We get the glorious news from the legendary caves of yahoo:

Roger Ebert will resume writing reviews later this month, but will not rejoin his syndicated TV show because he’s still unable to speak. In a letter published in Tuesday’s Chicago Sun-Times, the Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic and co-host of TV’s “Ebert & Roeper” said surgery in January ended in complications, and his ability to speak was not restored. He said the return of speech would require another surgery.

Ebert, 65, said he’s looking forward to his annual film festival starting April 23. “I will resume writing movie reviews shortly thereafter,” he said. He had undergone cancer surgery three times before the 2006 operation — once in 2002 to remove a malignant tumor on his thyroid gland and twice on his salivary gland the following year.

I enjoy Mr. Ebert’s reviews, and am glad he is back in the saddle. I can only imagine how hard it would be to have your voice taken away from you; with luck he will have this affliction remedied shortly as well. Fans of the Television show will have to settle for his written reviews for the time being; and that’s not a bad thing at all. Ebert writes fantastic print reviews that are a pleasure to read, and if you haven’t checked them out – you should certainly do so.

We are glad to hear of Ebert’s positive progress and anxiously await the day when his thumb of power returns to TV.

  1. Get well soon, you darlin’ man! Have watched you for many years, and always check your website before heading off to plunk down my hard-earned cash at the theater. Know hope, dear. The balcony is always open just for you.

  2. Even though I do not mind the tv show, for me it was only the pointer to Ebert’s (and Emerson’s, these days) website, which is such a great resource for information and truly wise and well-written texts of all ages. Just recently, after watching the Godfather trilogy again, I went back to read his original 1972 review, and this is just brilliant to explore. Could spend weeks roaming around that site.

  3. I heartily join all the rest in welcoming Roger back to the fray! His voice has certainly been missed on the weekends! Although Richard Roeper has been doing a great job along with the guest reviewers. Kevin Smith’s appearance on the show was stellar. Hang in there Roger!

  4. Get better soon Ebert. I have read Ebert’s reviews since I was just a little kid and continued to the present. Hope he writes for decades to come and has his voice return shortly! Always thoughtful and insightful reviews: Regardless if you agree with them or not. Best of luck.

  5. Best wishes to Ebert!

His reviews and passion for movies are gold. His courage and willingness to maintain a public profile despite the physical and mental hardships that have resulted are inspirational.
