Burn After Reading Set To Open Venice Film Festival

Nm Coen 071109 SsvThe Coen bros. continue to surf the wave of victory right to Venice. We get wind today that their new spy film Burn After Reading has been chosen to open the Venice Film Fest. We get the scoop from the foreboding and mysterious caves of Yahoo:

A spy comedy by Oscar-winning directors Joel and Ethan Coen starring George Clooney, John Malkovich and Brad Pitt will open this year’s Venice film festival, organizers said on Monday. The film, whose working title is “Burn After Reading,” tells the story of a former CIA agent whose memoirs fall into the hands of two unscrupulous gym employees.

Also in the cast are Oscar-winning actresses Tilda Swinton and Frances McDormand, who is married to Joel Coen. The film’s world premiere will screen on August 27, kicking off the 65th edition of festival which runs until Sept 6.

This is good news, and not all that surprising. I have the highest of hopes for this film, the cast is a legendary ensemble, the synopsis sounds hilarious and the directors are Coen brothers. If this movie sucks, it will be the biggest upset since Phantom Menace.

I am itching to see this film. I cannot wait to see Malkovich, Clooney and Pitt mix it up on the silver screen – this is going to be a fucking riot.

The film opening the Venice fest is certainly a very good sign. I’m not going to be at the festival sadly, but if any of you are able to go – please give me the heads up on this picture and I will be eternally grateful. For those of you, like myself, that are unable to get to Venice – the film will start rolling out (UK First) September 5th.

  1. Purely technical accuracy issue: You’ve confused two different Festivals. The Cannes Film Festival in your headline,(which is in May) and the Venice Film Festival where the film will actually screen in the body of the article.

Good for the Coens! Love the cast, I’m looking forward to this film.
