Dragonball Z Gets Delayed to April 09

Dragonball Z has not been on my hot list of movies to see later in the summer season, but it looks like those who were waiting for it are going to have to wait a little longer.

Coming Soon says:

20th Century Fox has pushed back the studios’ big screen Dragonball adaptation from August 15, 2008 to April 3, 2009. On the old date, it was facing The International, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Tropic Thunder and Wild Child, while it is currently by itself on the new date.

I could see DragonBall Z not faring well against Star Wars that weekend. Dragonball Z has its following, but there is a great amount of potential for animation fans to want to see the Star Wars series pilot on the big screen is too much for them to overlook.

It makes sense to bump it out of the way, but that is a REALLY big bump. They are pushing that into the next season.

  1. Yeah, I am so really sure an eight month delay will magically set right all the stupidity and preposterity that is the feature of this movie right when it started producing.

This pushback of release date is just a cowardly move by the Fox producers, knowing that the movie they are in process of making will only get flattened by the other movies, many of which are only B-class.

And unless it is a native Japanese company making this movie instead of Hollywood, people round the world will only get mad as any Dragonball live action movie. The boycott against this movie stirring up in Japan right now is a good example.

  2. Just one minor correction: This is an adaptation of Dragon Ball not Dragon Ball Z.
This movie is based off the first adventures of Goku when he was still a young tennager and the TV show was called Dragon Ball.
Dragon Ball Z is the sequel to the original Dragon Ball, but since DBZ is the most well known of the three TV shows, this mistake is fairly common.

Just to make it clear, it’s not an adaptation of Dragon Ball Z, it’s an adaptation of the original Dragon Ball tv show.
So obviously characters like Freeza, Cell, Vegeta, Nappa and many others are not even on the movie.

Anyway, I for one was very excited about this, until I heard about the dealy.
I read an article abouit this on Dark Horizons and all also agree it’s a pretty bad move by Fox.

Without Dragon Ball as one of their 2008 tentpoles, Fox only has 2 major movies which are X-Files 2 and The Happening(directed by M.Night Shymalan, which will likely bomb) against The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Hulk, Indiana Jones, Wall-E, Prince Caspian, Kung Fu Panda, Speed Racer and many more.

But alas, if the delays means that they’ll have better looking sfx, better editing, possible re-shoots, should they need them and better marketing… I’m OK with that.

  3. That’s one big bump, I guess that the film will earn more without a possible huge earner like the Star Wars film on at the same time. It also gives them some time to polish up the film.

It might suck, but I’d be interested in seeing how it turns out.

  4. I met one of the producers at a wedding at Mexico last weekend . He has such a prick. He was also one of the producers of Love in the times of cholera. I hope DBZ doesn’t fall in the same line.

  5. noooo! i know in my mind this movie is going to suck like theres no tomorrow, but i STILL wanna see it. I hope it will be worth the wait, but naturally it wont be.
