Coen Brothers Sign Up Clooney and Pitt For Next Project

Coen-BrothersThe work of the Coen Brothers never ever ceases to amaze me. All their projects seem so simple on the surface… and yet all have a labyrinth of depth behind them when you really stop to look. Films like O Brother Where Art Thou?, The Big Lebowski, Fargo, The Ladykillers (really underrated film)… on and on. Gio will be there opening day for any Coen film.

Their ability to snag solid casts for their films is also amazing. Take a look at this bit of news about their upcoming project from the good folks over at Movieweb:

Academy Award-winning filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen will write, produce, and direct their next two films for Focus Features and Working Title Films. The two projects are A Serious Man and the dark spy comedy Burn After Reading. The latter feature will star Academy Award winners George Clooney and Frances McDormand; Brad Pitt has newly joined the cast, and production is set to begin in late summer.

A couple of Coen veterans and Pitt to boot. Nice. I know nothing about this movie whatsoever… and I already can’t wait to see it!

You know what… now that I think about it… amongst all their amazing movies, I’d have to say that The Ladykillers is still my favorite one. That’s not a knock on Lebowski at all… I love that film too. Maybe I’m just a sucker for the underdog movies. I’ve never understood why more people don’t give this little gem of a movie its due. Fantastic pace, gut bustingly funny, amazing set of characters… if you haven’t seen it I highly recommend you run out and grab it today and check it out.

  1. I really disliked The Ladykillers. But, i still kneel in reverence before the alter of the Coens. Their track record is all hits and one miss for me.

I look forward to anything they have to offer.

  2. you know I think that Lebowski is one of those great quoting movies much like Airplane or Cadyshack, it really surprises me how many people have not seen it.

“You can imagine what happens next.”
    “He fixes their cable?”

  3. Coen Bros order of goodness for me –

    Raising Arizona
    O’ Brother, Where Art Thou
    Miller’s Crossing
    The Big Lebowski

I didnt like Lady Killers at all, and Intolerable Cruelty was tolerable but not great by any stretch of the imagination.

I ‘m looking forward to this one and Hail, Ceasar.

  4. Finally, someone says they like The Ladykillers…all I keep meeting are naysayers, and I had begun to question my sanity. Sure, the story isn’t exciting, but each character had a)great dialogue and b)great potrayal from the actors. Kudos to the Coen Brothers, I am always excited for what they do.

  5. My wife and I love the Lady Killers… Marlon Wayans ruined the movie though. The Coen Brothers’ movies are so brilliantly written you don’t need the curse word a second, Def Comedy Jam act in them. That style has a place and I enjoy it like anyone else. However, it was just not needed here.

Wayans seemed so out of his league next to the other hilarious characters in the film. Marlon is a funny dude… wish they would’ve given him a character to play as well.

FYI – Raising Arizona is the best Coen Bros. movie PERIOD.

  6. Those Coens – a crazy pair I say and extremely talented. They are disturbingly great and one of my fond memories is taking an entire class in college where we studied them and their movies for an entire semester. Sweeeeeet. Can’t wait to see these movies.

  7. Well if you say that The Ladykiller’s us a film seen by the minority then I’m one of them! I thought the movie was pretty good but nothing speical or anything and I can see why people don’t like it. It’s almost like an aquired taste. I liked the characters, especially Hanks’ but I wouldn’t say the film is “gut-bustingly funny” like you say. But yeah it’s a pretty neat little film that I agree; more people should see.

With regards to this new project, I will be right next to you in line John, for any movie that they make. After seeing The Big Lebowski (which is in my eyes their best by FAR), Fargo and Barton Fink I simply can’t get enough of these guys. So yeah I will be right up there near the front of the queue when these movies get released and hopefully they are just as good as their other films.
