Next Hulk Movie Not A Sequel

Most of you know that I’ve been really looking forward to Hulk 2. Well… it is indeed coming. Sort of.

The good folks over at AICN have a story about a recent interview with Avi Arad where he says that the next Hulk flick won’t really be a sequel. Here’s what was said:

ARAD: (edit) …a lot of people are looking forward to the comic book version of the HULK. That’s the one we are making, and I think it will be incredibly satisfying. It will be big and awesome and a big ride.

iF: So will you be recasting HULK with completely new actors?

ARAD: It’s a “do-over”. I loved the HULK movie, it was just a different approach, and it wasn’t exactly the comic. We want to be much closer to the comic. It’s what we would rather do.

A “do-over”? Look, I don’t mind the idea of remakes (see previous post), but isn’t it a little early to be doing a remake of your own film that was just out a few years ago? Why not just make it a sequel and do it in a new way than you did it in the first?

I don’t know… personally I think this sounds like a lame idea… but I’ll try not to jump to any conclusions yet and see how it unfolds.

  1. Someone else below asked this already.
I am getting nailed with Spam in my website for our blog website. Is there anyway to stop

this? If not, there really isn’t any point in leaving it up and active. Any help will be greatly

    appreciated.

    Thanks

  2. A ‘do over’? That’s pretty lame. Especially considering that “The Hulk” was a pretty decent movie. Sure, it’s not everyone’s comic book turned movie favourite but I thought it was really well done. Still looking forward to a second Hulk movie. I just hope it’s not a total rip of the first…

  3. I enjoyed the first movie, and there’s no real reason you could not follow up on it with another Hulk story. I can see where it might have confused or dissapointed some viewers, but the Hulk was very Hulky and the story had all the right characters. The Hulk was never a superhero, he was a monster with a very good, noble man trying to control it.

  4. I’m sorry but some of you guys are bloody stupid. Okay, okay, it’s a Hulk movie. But this was ANG FUCKING LEE. The guy directed Crouching Tiger and Sense And Sensibility for fuck’s sake. The whole geek world was bitching and moaning when their precious stories were being turned into retarded kiddy films but as soon as they start getting in super-talented directors all they can whine about is “There’s not enough smashing.”

“I hated how this movie was focused on Bruce Banner too much”

What the HELL are you talking about? Bruce Banner IS the Hulk! His story is the Hulk’s story! Maybe they can get Joel Schumacher in for this remake and you can all get the Hulk movie you really want.

This move is bullshit. It’s cowardice basically. They hire Ang Lee and he makes an Ang Lee film. The fans bitch so marvel back down and try to get their money again. It took a lot of balls to veer so far away from the traditional superhero movie formula and it did the grown-up superhero thing before Batman Begins. The actors are all great (even the homeless-looking Nick Nolte), the music as someone’s said is AMAZING and the origin is dealt with in a new and interesting way, being faithful to the source while surprising some of the fans (like me) with its new twists. And I even love the editing style, first of all just because it HAS a style (so many movies just pinch one from someone else) and secondly because the movie shifts like a greyhound.

I’ve never read the Hulk to see pretty pictures of him smashing shit up, I’ve read it because Banner’s problem is compelling. This is a superhero who’s superhero powers actually hurt people and are beyond his control. This isn’t Spider-man bitching about his goddamn money-troubles or whining about some hot chick who really wants to sleep with him. Banner has his powers forced upon him. He can’t choose to be a superhero. He can’t control it and it terrifies him. THAT is why I read Hulk. The character is unlike any other superhero and the film, much to my delight, was unlike any other superhero film. Now it seems like it’s being punished for this. It’ll only lead to more Fantastic Fours, more unchallenging, uninteresting and completely dickless movie adaptations. It’ll lead us right back to Batman And Robin.

  5. I get it. It’s like Evil Dead 1 & 2. The first one was all plot and stupid effects. The second one will rush through the orgin and then get on with the 9/11 type desturction. Hulk 2 is going more like an apology then a movie.

  6. No matter how lame it sounds or how much anti hulk ammo this gives Doug, and no matter how many jokes I laugh at you guys cracking about this before it comes out, i’m sure you realize that if they do it well and it entertains you, no one will care how soon they have done it over, right?

  7. The first Hulk movie was excellent. It had a great combination of story, character and action. If they do a new hulk movie based on only the last 20 minutes of the first one (where he was fighting his dad/absorbing man) I’m not gonna go see it.

I love movies that deal with father/son relationships or man/god relationships which could very well be the same thing. Maybe that is why i like Hulk so much. If they just do a ‘smash-em-up’ Hulk whats the point? Everybody here seems to just type “I just want this or that to get in a huge fight and that’ll be enough!!!!!” but everybody knows it is not, and nobody wants a fucking Hulk movie with him fighting for 90 minutes.

It sucks that they are shying away from a good movie.

  8. Maybe they should do a “do over” of every movie that didnt work out well. You dont know if its going to be well recieved until its out.

Its sad when they obviously had a direction and mission to begin with and now they are doing it over because “It‚Äôs what we would rather do.”

Im wondering who held a gun to their head to make it a STORY instead of an action/explosion flick.

Myself, I prefer the interesting story driven Hulk rather than HULK SMASH the movie. (I said it first, so they can pay me if they name it that)

  9. The first movie was such a pile of shit, you can’t blame Marvel for wanting to distance themselves from it. They want to make money on these things, after all; they’ve got bills to pay. Why else would they crank out craptastic shit like Fantastic 4.

Just have the re-do start with Banner on the run from the government (which is how the first one should’ve started anyways). For the ‘origin’, just have him have some flashbacks to when he got hit with the gamma-rays. All people care about is that when this guy gets pissed off, he transforms into a giant green beast that smashes things, his origin really ISN’T important. He’s not like Batman or Spider-Man, whose origins define their whole character.

  10. the irst movie didn’t suck, but it has it problems. They can use that movie to make a sequel, only do it better this time. It’s to early for a redux(it’s not a remake)

  11. I liked the first Hulk film, although I did not care for ‘the picture in picture’ which I felt was distracting. It would be neat if they used it for the “alternated angle” feature on the DVDs, and bump off the Sunny D ad in its stead.

So this is going to be called “The Incredible Hulk”… and…even if there are some who didn’t care for Ang Lee’s take, fine. Here’s a sequel, the next helmer in line doesn’t have to worry about orgin stories.

I’ll hand it to Avi. He means well, and he’s a trooper. He brung Marvel back in a major way especially as far as it relates to film and TV. He seems like a nice guy. But this information makes it sound like he didn’t care for the first film- a film which he helped cheerlead. It’s like a slap in the face to those who worked on it. I don’t mind it if the movie is called “Incredible Hulk” but it is better off as a sequel. That’s how it will be percieved.

Any changes made to Hulk can be explained. “Father” Bruce took some of his son in the big showdown, Hulk doesn’t get to be 20′ tall anymore, just 10′ feet. They don’t want the same cast? Fine. Change in music? Fine (although I think Elfman’s score was the best since he did ‘Batman’) Change in director? Sure. But if Avi or anyone else thinks anyone’s going to sit for another fourty minutes for orgin story in a ‘redo’ is insane. Even ‘The Punisher’ had a 15 year gap between the Lundgren and Jane versions.

    Hey
A good number of people hated Fantastic Four. When that starts up again in August, just call it ‘Silver Surfer’ w/the FF as supporting window dressing and redo thier -and Doom’s- orgin story.

    Hey
Why not redo ‘Man-Thing’? I WOULD.

  12. umm…so are they addmiting that hulk suked and are making a better one? dont get me wrong, i enjoyed the hulk movie, but most people didnt.. a reamake..its only been like 3 years

  13. This is AMAZING news for me. I hated the Hulk movie. I’m a fan of the comic, and I do believe in changing certain things for a movie but once you drift too far from the comic source then your left with something totally different from the source all together.

I hated how the Hulk’s origin was changed, I hated how this movie was focused on Bruce Banner too much. I did enjoy the last 40mins of Hulk but that was it. I wanna see the Hulk going ape-shit, fucking up things. I would love for the whole desert scene to take place in the new movie, thats my favorite thing about Hulk’s origins was the gama bomb going off and having Rick Jones that punk ass bitch driving into the test. Hulk was all about frustration and anger and in the movie they made him a victim of parental abuse. And thats what I wanna see, someone whos anger builds until he releases it and kicks major ass.

  14. If you’ve played the recent hulk videogames you’d get it. The hulk game based on the movie was good, but Hulk: Ultimate Destruction was incredible. Both had a fairly interesting story but Ultimate Destruction took the angle that the Hulk is more about action than drama and retold the story and went nuts with it. So this is one “do-over” I’d love this to see happen.
