  1. Give me a break… There’s more than enough drama in X3. Wake up people its a freakin war in the movie so obviously the action has to be at the forefront. And come on the plot of X3 is way better than X1. You comic geeks are the real reason these movies change in tone so much because you can’t decide if you want pure drama or amazing action. Hulk is the perfect example if it was nonstop action only you would have bitched about no story and emotional depth. Comic geeks suck a big one.

  2. Superman: What about Brainiac? Metallo?
I would seriously put brainiac in the sequel, since their rivalry has only been explored in cartoons and comics….theres’ alot of potential there.

Oh and about Al Gore ( and you know I’m about as Republican as a halfway fair minded person could be ): I’ve never had a problem with the man, politically or personally. I seriously think he should be admired for taking a passion to anything.

I dont buy into the fact that we’re destroying the planet. I do know there are places ON earth that have been messed up due to human intervention… but on a larger scale I don’t believe Gores’ claims…. BUT people should admire him for following what he believes is right.

  3. Time will tell John.

The main counterpoint to your argument in regards to knowing the characters in X-men is there are what 20 characters in the first two movies. How many had any substantial screen time? How long were X1 & X2? How long was FOTR and TTT? The LOTR movies are roughly twice as long as the X-Men movies. By the time ROTK rolls around we do know those characters. In X-Men, they are more like caricatures.

Characters are characters. Be it Batman, X-Men, or SpongeBob SquarePants. Never read the X-Men comics, so if they come off lightweight is that something the movies should copy or should they try to improve upon them? I choose improvement.

We stand on opposite sides of an abyss – but like you posted, discussion is good.

I worry for future comic book movies.

  4. Hey there Lou,

Wow… I just can’t put into words how wrong I think you are (we all have our opinions).

The X-Men are not… never have been… and never will be Batman. Neither in the comics or in the films. The comparison is misplaced in my opinion.

This was the third part. I don’t need to know anything more about Wolverine… or Storm… or Magneto… the first 2 films spent good time aquanting us with them. Much like Return of The King didn’t need to spend too much time on Character Development… because we know the characters already… now it’s time for the story to just play itself out.

I concur that this is the weakest of the 3 films. However, this is still a good movie, and not at all in the same vein as Fantastic Four in any way, shape or form.

It’s all just opinon, and yours is every bit as legit as mine… I just STRONGLY disagree with your points.

    Discussion is good.

    Cheers!

  5. Well John, you recently did a ‘cast where you said stated that X-Men revived the superhero franchise. Create a bookmark, for a future show. X3 and FF4 led the way to the popcorn movie. Light and airy, with no lasting power. While the fans can enjoy different types of superhero movies, I am afraid that the suits are going to look at the BO returns of these ‘popcorn’ movies and say, ‘Hey, forget all that crap about treating superheroes as fleshed out characters! Forget that dark Batman crap! Forget logical storytelling! Just throw a bunch of them together and have them throw crap around!’

    X3 is fun.

It is also a BIG missed opportunity.

Imagine ROTK done in 90 minutes!?!? Two powerful story lines crammed together and pureed into a WWF tagteam rumble. This is the dramatic apex for the X-Men franchise. I cannot imagine these characters being presented with such a powerful choice again.

All we got was a t-shirt, er a popcorn movie.

    Sad.

And unfortunately a trend that I am seriously afraid the suits will jump on. Enjoy the next few superhero movies already in production, because after that, expect more FUN ie all sizzle, no substance superhero movies.

Don’t believe me – check out the X3 BO returns.

X-Men may have revived the superhero movie. X3 has killed the serious ones.

  6. Just saw it this morning. I think, it was freakin awesome. I think it was just as good, not better, but definitely just as good as the second. Yes the second was much better directed and I could tell that and felt that too, but, the storyline in this one, the major story points of this one, were just freakin incredible I thought.

Jean Grey was probly my favorite character in the second, which more then likely has a lot to do with why I liked this one so much, cause man this was just her movie. She was the most important and most well written character in it I thought, and the, not spoiling, end of the movie story point involving her and that other character, how it ended, was awesomeeeeeeeeee.

And I disagree on Halle Berry too a bit. Yes she was in a lot of the scenes, but, not too many I thought, cause the storyline kinda demanded it that she was. The, ’cause’ of her having to do that eulogy, involving the school and her new role in it, well someone had to do it and it wasn’t gonna be wolverine, so I felt the story kinda demanded that much presence from her.

And I disagree on Cyclops too, he, no way to say it without spoiling it, wasn’t in it long enough to ‘own’ the character.

Overall, not as well directed as the second, but I really really loved the storyline of it, the way that last battle ended, the last scene before the credits, and the last scene after the credits, which I’m now soo happy I didn’t see beforehand cause that definitely would have spoiled some of the film for me, just the whole storyline of it, especially Jean’s role in it, makes it just as good if not actually a little better then the second for me.

  7. Where to start.

    1) X-Men 3. Not great, but hardly a total diasater. But I also think we have a situation not unlike “Terminator” where someone had to fill the director’s shoes from the previous two films. Yes, Singer’s pair of films were better than Last Stand. But Last Stand is far from disaster. A “go” reccomend I have to back up. I have to disagree, however, on some bits:

*Angel was important to the story- his father is the one who developed ‘the cure’. Why did he decide not to be ‘cured’ at the last moment? When he was a child he mutilated himself, cutting off his wings. A lot more could have been done with this character. A nice touch would have been the Stryker connection (Angel was considered for X2, dropped at the last moment- during the Logan-Deathstrike fight you can see X-Rays of Ange’s wings- but maybe it was Sauron now for all we know)

*Also, I wouldn’t call the Iceman-Pride-Rogue situation a ‘love triangle’. But I did think a golden opportunity was missed with Rogue’s lack of screen time.

*Halle Barry. WTF is you guys problem with Halle Barry? She was great in this picture. And don’t blow it off saying ‘oh she was wicked in the fights/flight’. The eulogy scene. I..well, okay, maybe it should have been Beast doing the speech (or perhaps a mutant cameo by… Nightcrawler…? ) but lookie here. “Cyke” is (supposedly) dead. Jean is the Pheonix and joined off with Magneto. Magneto isn’t going to show his face around here. Logan doesn’t feel right doing it. Prof X was passing the torch to Storm. When all the evidence weighs in…y’know something? I’m full of shit. Y’know why? Because the funeral scene wasn’t needed anyway! There, I said it! Everyone happy now? Good! I hope you feel better!

Seriously, just show the headstones of Xavier and Scott (did they find his body?) but also, I didn’t have a problem with Halle in the picture.

Now, overall, I really liked the picture, despite the plot holes, zingers, lack of Nightcrawler and that atrocious Danger Room sequence. (“Teamwork” is stressed in this scene; odd- you mean those who fought the Brotherhood on Ellis Island wasn’t working as a team? When they ‘united’ and confronted Stryker? Hmmm…)

Nightcrawler gets an honorable mention *by Chris Claremont” in the novel, but he does not show up in the novel or is mentioned by any characters..from what I understand, the video game “explains” his absence. “I don’t think the X-Men is for me” and he leaves.
For those of you who stick to your guns on this and pass that off as gospel? With due respect, screw you. So he isn’t cut out to be an X-Man or does not want to join up with the X-Men. I don’t buy it, but okay, let’s say that’s right and canon. So here’s ‘X-Men The Last Stand’. What does Nightcrawler’s declined invite to be part of the X-Men have to do with anything?

But y’know, if they hardly ask what happened to Cyclops, why would they even remember Nightcrawler? Kinberg and Penn wrote this and Ratner helmed; this combo spells out good mindless entertainment for those with low attention spans.

    2) Looks interesting- but I pass.

    3) Again, the face is pretty much covered up and the suit would increase the height.

    4) Bah. When it’s not political pandering from the left it’s political pandering from the right.

    5) They should consider Darkseid.

    6) I don’t watch the UFC. I watch the K-1.

    -Sealer.

  8. Yeah. Hmm. We’re all gonna die from global warming….. in a hundred years. If I’m alive when I’m 120 I’ll be pretty pissed off anyway. Call me selfish and lazy…

  9. I’ve been searching the web all morning trying to figure out or get answer to why Alan Cumming did not reprise the role in X3. I found nothing as to why he’s not in X3. So I said to myself I will try find out from storyline point of view where did he go to. I summited on superherohype.com a new tread. In this tread I’ve asked people who played the game to leave the answer for me. In the movie it could have been a nice little touch to have meantioned Nightcrawler aleast once.

As for the Superman villians you have Brainiac, Metallo , Bizarro and Lobo. They are characters that could be used throughout the next few movie. Even if people don’t have a clue who the villians are going into the movie, the movie itself will explain who they are and just the name Superman will drag people to the movie anyway and if the new Superman movie blows the box office away people will rush for Superman 4.

  10. Hey there hi

Actually, I ran a story at the time it was announced Nightcrawler wasn’t going to be in X-Men 3. Allan Cumming (Nightcrawler) said he was “stunned” when they told him he wasn’t in their plans. So yes… CUmming very much wanted to be Nightcrawler again.

    Cheers!

    ~John

  11. The only reason the general public doesn’t know about the Superman rogue’s gallery is because they weren’t in the previous movies. Did you know in the first script draft of the Supergirl movie that Brainiac was going to be one of the villains (paired up with Faye Dunaway’s character). For whatever reason, they replaced Brainiac with Peter Cook. Talk about a switch.

  12. Great show guys. I’m really looking forward to “An Inconvienient Truth”. I’ve been ranting about global warming to anyone that will listen for the last 10 years. Hopefully, this will bring the issue to the table and encourage people to think of this as THEIR problem, not someone elses.

As for David Suzuki, the guy is a total genius. I’ve heard him speak twice and I’m always amazed at how articulate he is and how he manages to make boring, complicated topics understandable for the “average” person. He really is a great man.

  13. So Magneto is more of a badass for being able to stop Wolverine again (like the first X-Men) but not for PULLING THE PINS OUT OF GRENADES ON SOLDIERS ATTACKING HIM like in X2. I’m sorry but X2 had far more “oh shit!” moments than X3.
