The Hunger Games Movie Release Date Announced

I had to check out what the buzz was all about and a while ago read both of the Hunger Games books back to back and then eagerly awaited the third chapter.

The film adaptation has been on the books for a while now, and with tiny bits of news inkling out every now and again, we finally get a release date for The Hunger Games movie.

Lionsgate has chosen a release date for high-profile event picture The Hunger Games: March 23, 2012.

Gary Ross is directing the feature adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ bestselling young adult tome. Hunger Games is the first in a trilogy of science fiction novels that have developed a global following.

There are more than 3.3 million copies of Hunger Games in print in the U.S. alone, while foreign rights have been sold in 41 countries, according to publisher Scholastic.

This is good news indeed, as it means we will be getting a LOT more news in coming months.

To accomplish a very ambitious release date of March 2012, they are going to have to solidify the cast very soon.

I am eager to see this adapted to the big screen, and I can’t see it being more harsh than a PG-13.

  1. I loved the books too. For some reason I can’t help but picture Katniss as Saoirse Ronan. I’m sure there’s a zero percent chance she’ll get the part but one can hope.

  2. The school I go to sent a bunch of letters to Gary Ross about the movie and he actually replied!!! He said he might even come to our school to discuss the book and movie

  3. I love these books…it will be interesting to see how it translates to the big screen. The casting will be important, but not as much as the tone i think. How true they stay to the source will be difficult considering the PG13 rating.

      1. I agree Rodney, yet I think the target audience is going to be much younger and tonally it will be nothing like The Dark Knight, although it should be. I get the feeling they want to grab a wider audience and will end up sanitizing the story quite a bit. They can still pull it off Im sure, but it will be difficult, I think.

I could be wrong but I remember reading a quote from either Ross or a producer that they want the 12 year old fans to be able to see the film, now that doesnt mean it wont be good, but the book while aimed at young adults, is not really a 12 year old story.
