A Powerful Story Set in 1945 Arkansas

Set in Little Rock, Arkansas during 1945, _I’ve Cried the Blues_ follows Mattie, a woman determined to rise above the harsh realities of segregation in the South.
The production combines emotional storytelling with a rich blend of blues, jazz, and gospel music. Themes of love, sacrifice, resilience, and survival drive the narrative forward.
Dennis Williams described the story as especially timely.
“At a moment when our history feels dangerously close to repeating itself, telling these stories is necessary,” Williams said. “Our ancestors dreamed boldly in impossible conditions, and that courage lives in us today.”
Star Power Joins the Production
This latest staging brings major talent to the production. The musical stars Candiace Dillard Bassett, known for The Traitors and The Real Housewives of Potomac, alongside Grammy Award winning artist Darrel Walls.
The cast also includes powerhouse performer Karen Linette as Mattie, delivering the emotional center of the story.
Their performances add fresh energy to a musical already praised for its emotional depth and musical power.
A Historic Venue for a Major Debut
The debut takes place at the legendary Shubert Theatre in downtown New Haven. The venue earned the nickname “The Birthplace of the Nation’s Greatest Hits” after hosting the premieres of iconic productions like The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady before their Broadway runs.
The theater continues to host major productions including TINA: The Tina Turner Musical, SIX, and A Beautiful Noise.
That history makes the arrival of _I’ve Cried the Blues_ even more significant.
