Crank Duo To Direct Ghost Rider Sequel?

The first Ghost Rider movie (2007) grossed a decent $155 million domestically (almost $230 million worldwide). This was surprisingly great. Talk of a sequel has been hunting us since then. Now, it appears that the moves are being made to get us a sequel ASAP. Why? Well, apparently Sony will lose the rights back to Marvel very soon; so they need to be in production before November. News is out on who the director/directors for the sequel may be…

JoBlo says:

Now CRANK filmmakers Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor are in talks to twist the throttle on GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE. The sequel story came from producer David Goyer with a screenplay by “FlashForward” writers Scott Gimple and Seth Hoffman, although it’s assumed that Neveldine/Taylor would crank (ahem) out a rewrite.

Originally there was a question as to whether Nicolas Cage would return as stuntman-turned-fireskulled-vigilante-cyclist Johnny Blaze, because a third NATIONAL TREASURE has also been inching toward the starting line. But Cage is now in negotiations to come back for more penance staring and chain swirling.

  1. if they put the time and effort forward and brought their A-game to the first one.(?????) then I’d hate to see what a rushed “get it out before we lose the rights” film (using that word lightly)looks like.

they did that with Fantastic Four waaaay back when and look how that turned out (almost as bad as the new one)

  2. I like the idea that they are making Ghost Rider 2 but i dont like the reasons or the direcor choice. if you are going to make a sequel make one because you have a great story in mind. also Ghost Rider cant be as silly as crank was, it just wouldnt work.

  3. If the Crank directors get hired on that would make me excited for it. The only problem is that they would make it hardcore and R (which is actually why I’m excited for it) but also that’s kinda a problem because it lessens the chance for money. Would could be a problem sense these guy’s movies don’t really make loads of cash and that can be a problem in Hollywood.

  4. The first was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I do not say that lightly. I don’t get why studios sit on so many scripts, books and other IPs that would make fantastic movies… but get all in a hussy over making a bad film, with a mediocre to bad IP, when they’re about to lose rights. It honestly doesn’t make financial sense, either. If it’s a crappy concept, just let the rights fade. If Sony could have made a good movie with it, they would have made it with Nicholas Cage, but they didn’t. Give up on the IP and let someone else have it who may just have better ideas, or let it die a merciful death.

  5. No. Just… no.
These guys can’t do serious. And GR needs a type of dark grittiness to be taken seriously. Cage was the wrong guy from the start. This is just… well let’s just say it… on a highway to Hell.

  6. I want a Ghost Rider 2. I like the idea that Cage may be back. However, if they want this thing up and running by November, then I don’t think Neveldine and Taylor would rewrite much. My only concern right now is that it IS N & T. I was not a huge Crank or Crank 2 fan. I *hated* Gamer. I though their writing Pathology was alright…and I don’t know how well the Jonah Hex writing went, but we’ll find out our worst fears come this weekend on how well it translates.

One thing I hope for, however. I can see the ink drying on this. I think they just might sign. If so, please, pretty please…no shaky cameras, no rapid cutting.

The first film had some good things in it (mostly supporting character actors Sam Elliot and Peter Fonda) and the FX was great in a few places, good in some, and lame in others.
