Justice League Movie To Be CGI

Now THIS makes a whole lot more sense than what we’ve been hearing so far. That Justice League movie that we’ve heard may be fast tracking over at Warner… well… it is on the move… but NOT A LIVE ACTION FILM. Our friends over at IESB have just got confirmation that it looks like Justice League will be a full motion captured CGI film.

Here’s what IESB had to say:

We have just received an interesting email that indicates the Justice League of America film might be headed to the world of Motion Capture! I wasn’t sure about the validity of the email, so I went in search of some confirmation. I got it. I got confirmation from several sources from ILM to Rhythm and Hues that said the same thing. From what we are hearing, there may be some truth to this, but again, right now it’s a rumor and we will post final confirmation if this is true or not when we have it.

Ok, now follow me here… if this is true, then it’s a BRILLIANT move. It’s a win/win/win.

1) First of all it’s been a while since we had a full motion capture CGI film, and I’d love to see what they can do with the new technology.

2) A film like Justice League would only be limited by the imagination of the director in a full CGI motion capture environment.

3) This wouldn’t interfere with the current Batman or Superman projects

4) It would still help Warner Bros. increase the recognition of their secondary characters like Flash and Wonder Woman for possible live action adaptations.

So yeah, over all… if this is indeed true, I will do a complete 180 and go from calling a Justice League movie a horrible idea, to being an absolutely great one. Let’s hope this is indeed what Warner is aiming for. Thanks to TY for the heads up.

  1. This entire CGI concept is weaky. It’s Capt. Weak! Inception actually used real sets along with the CGI. THis is nothing more than a glorified cartoon that won’t be shot in 3d yet packaged that way. IF Dennis Hopper was alive I would feed him coke and brown booze and send him on a kill mission to those who create these films in hollywood because the great actors are dying or dead. Long live Super16mm and the return of the great actor!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. it was stated the pixar should do it. i just recently watched the incredibles again…an amazing movie! i’m in awe every time i watch it. probably one of the most complete movies that has come out in a long time. anyway this is about jl. for those that enjoy cgi will dig this move. i’m one of those. that final fantasy advent children movie was pretty good. i had no idea what was going on but the action was damn good. i’ve always said any good jl movie should have those involved with the cartoon series involved. the writing on those shows and their ability to write for ensemble casts was pretty good. as far as the cgi. i would prefer it not be as cartoony as the incredibles but it does not have to be as photorealistic as the matrix skit. all in all, i don’t think cgi would be a bad idea & kevin conrad as batman should be demanded as much as the original optimus prime was.

  3. @ Jason Presti
the fx used in Superman Returns were mostly subtle ones (outside of the flying sequences & plane save) & not the blatant lightshows most people are conditioned to expect these days. if you look for them, there are many to see. as for the 200 mil plus budget, i still think they factored in the cost of global promotion into those numbers.

    @ Campea
after hearing your nowlive podcast earlier, i would definitely ‘pumped’ for the JLA now. you know you are ;-)

  4. The problem is if they do this they will try to make it look photorealistic, and if they try to do that it will not look good. The comment above about making it look like Alex Ross doesn’t really make sense if you think about it, because one of the main reasons people love Ross’s art is because it looks like real life. So the way to make it look like his art is to do it in live action! The only problem this would solve would be the Christian Bale problem. Otherwise it is all disadvantage and no advantage. (It could also cost more while eliminating most of the audience that would go to a live action version.)

If they want to go all out with 2-D animation I will be excited, otherwise give me live action!

    (and George Miller!)

  5. I hope brandon routh didn’t prematurely quit his pizza delivery job! poor bastard….
now all his hopes are pinned on the sequel to superman returns…the one that isn’t going to happen.

  6. I must be among the minority who spun 180 degrees the other direction. I was hoping to see a JLA movie, but have ZERO interest in a CGI movie. I just don’t think they look good. Might as well be old-school animation to me.

    Very disappointing.

  7. I agree totally here also. CGI is the way to go and the only way we are going to experience The Justice League the way it should be.

Movie Companies recently have become cheap when it comes to the cost of comic book movies AND in their scope.

They claim to have spent like $200 million on Superman Returns and the movie looked like they spent $60 million. Seriously it looked mehas far as effects go.

Both Fantastic Four movies should have been epic films but had very low budgets for what you would expect and it showed.

Don’t get me started on Ghost Rider! the action scenes in GR looked like they were straight out of Mortal Kombat…Annihilation!

It is not that they aren’t capable of doing a great JLA movie right now, I just have not seen ANY commitment on the movie companies part to make it right Now!

We have seen what rushed superhero movies turn out like(Cough Xmen 3 cough).

They have all the time in the world to make a live action JLA.

  8. “John, you were right on this one. The studio listened to you”

For the first time in my life, I am confused with Gio Campea. :p
Either that, or we had agreed on the same thing since day one concerning JLA.

Look through all the JLA posts if you think I’m kidding.

Here’s a hint ‘like Final Fantasy Spirits Within’ (CG characters)

  9. This is dissappointing. I was hoping to see a live action JLA movie with real actors. Now we get another animated comic book movie. Much less exciting.

This is probably the best way to go with fantasy movies though, to do it all CGI. It’s cheaper and easier to depict really crazy imagery. But it still seems like a cop out. It’s just not the same as live action, especially with CGI human characters. It doesn’t matter who’s playing what hero now, they’re all just drawn in a computer. There’s no special effects or stuntwork. There’s no sexy actress playing Wonder Woman. It’s just not the same.

Maybe if they could do CGI humans in movies well enough that you couldn’t tell the difference, I wouldn’t mind. But they’re just not there yet. Not even close.

  10. I’d prefer a live action film. I want to see Jennifer Love Hewitt as Wonder Woman, Alan Cumming as Plastic Man, and I’d like to see different actors as Batman and Superman (Colin Farrell and Freddie Prinze Jr, respectively).

  11. That is excellent news. Now they have to cast it right, and realize that a “Celebrity Voice” is not needed for these roles. I am cringing at the casting choices of Lucy Lawless as Wonder Woman, David Boreanaz as Green Lantern (Hal), and Kyle MacLachlan as Superman in that new video release of Justice League: New Frontier coming out soon.

Unless of course, said celebrity would be playing that character in the live action adaptation of their own movie, then I have no problem with it, like if they got Christian Bale to do Batman, or Brandon Routh to do Superman, or Ryan Renyolds as the Flash (as his name always comes up when a Flash movie is mentioned). If they do not want “celebrity”, go with the voices from the frakkin JL/JLU cartoon! I would love for a big screen Batman to be done by Kevin Conroy, who has basically been the voice of Batman for the last 15 years in the DCAU

The other thing of course will be the choice of villain. DC and Warner Bros need to stop with things like Bat rules, etc, in order to make a GOOD movie. For those not in the know, when WB started up their new Batman cartoon a couple of years ago, WB told the people doing the JLU cartoon that Bat villains and supporting cast members, like Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, were OFF LIMITS since The Batman was changing some of the origins of these characters (which SUXXED since one of the best stories IMHO was when the original 7 Leaguers fought the Joker & Harley Quinn in Vegas)

I fear that with an established Batman and Superman movie franchise already in place that a similar edict might be passed by Warner Brothers to not use villains from either of their Rogue Galleries, which would suck, as if you look at most of the truly awesome and powerful villains in the DC Universe, they usually have either Batman or Superman as their heroic foils, ie Lex Luthor, Joker, Darkseid, Brainiac, Ra’s Al Ghul.

  12. I agree that it’s gone from bad to worse. CGI motion capture is creepy, I don’t care how any of the producing studios claim it isn’t, eyes look dead and movement is wooden (they just can’t seem to get the physics right). Zemekis had Polar Express and now this Beowulf thing in the pipeline (the one with the “naked Angelina Jolie”), and they both look just…creepy. Now, if they stylize the characters instead of photo realistic representations, we can talk

  13. if it be the truth,i’m in. more comic-based shit needs to be done this way. Punisher & especially Daredevil & Elektra should have been done that way.

  14. I completely agreed with John about the JL movie idea sucking the big one simply cause it was either gonna go 1 of 2 ways: 1) Mostly all of the focus on the Big 3 of Superman, Batman & Wonder Woman, while great characters like Green Lantern, Flash, Martian Manhunter, etc. got the shaft and had their screen time relegated to next to nothing, or 2) the Big 3 would only be ancillary players in the movie, while characters like Hawkman, Green Arrow, etc. took the forefront and brought the star power of the flck way, way down.
With the declaration of the movie being in CGI I think that this is a great idea. You can now have a balanced movie with no care of casting, outlandish budget requests, actor power plays for screen time, and so on. You can keep the focus on the TEAM now.

  15. NOW this sounds like a movie Id go and see but what would be great is if somehow they got pixar to do it. I think it would be icredable to see if pixar could go darker
