Jessica Alba is some serious eyecandy. And much to the plight of the beautiful, they are cursed to be lifted on the shoulders of the ugly and hailed as demigods. But their own inner turmoil is always the same. They want to be taken seriously.
She says she wants to be a serious actress, not to be all about ‘me in a bikini’. She’d like to play ‘more women who aren’t prostitutes or sexy maids’.
She claims she doesn’t consciously flaunt her body because she doesn’t enjoy ‘attracting attention’.
But most pictures we’ve seen of the well-proportioned 26-year-old are staged for maximum sexual effect. Racy. Outré. T and A.
The article continues on to bash the sexy actress calling her a hypocrite. I don’t think wanting to be something grander than your pigeonholed reputation allows is a poor aspiration. I am sure she is well aware of how attractive she is, and she’s certainly aware that it is that feature that has landed her a number of roles. On screen she is exactly as sexy or revealing as the director tells her to be. Maybe she is just tired of it?
I feel her pain. I really do. For someone to “make it” in Hollywood is rare enough when you consider the handful of real recognizable names, and the millions who are trying for those coveted places in the hallowed halls of cinematic history.
Can someone who is hired for being hot rise above the stereotype and be considered seriously? I think so.
Leonardo DiCaprio. A MovieBlog favourite started out as a teen heartthrob and I feel he is single handedly responsible for causing Growing Pains to Jump the Shark, and even most DiCaprio fans stop to say “he was on that show?”. But he showed the world he was more than a pretty face.
Other actors have broken their stereotype like Sylvester Stalone (though only briefly) in the non-action incredibly funny Oscar.
The biggest problem that these actors will face will be us. The viewing audience. The first time we see Jessica Alba in a serious drama the first complaint will be that she wasn’t pretty enough because there wont be an obligatory “walking around her apartment in her underwear” scene. But if she does a good job, then people will see past it.
Time will tell.
