The Hulk Isn’t Going To Be Green

Hulk-GreyOn any bit of Hulk news I’m required to mention that I actually liked the first Hulk movie. Having said that, like everyone else on the planet I very much look forward to a more “Hulk Smash tiny humans” kind of flick that seems to be heading our way. They’ve already announced that the next Hulk film (sort of a reboot and kind of pretending the first one doesn’t exist) is going to have loads more action… and having recently announced that Louis Leterrier (Unleashed, The Transporter movies) is directing and Edward Norton is playing the lead, everything seems to be heading in the right direction.

But hold the phone. Although it’s true that Hulk has had several colors of skin in the comics, I think we can all agree that when we think “HULK”… we think of the big GREEN guy. Well… according to Marvel Honcho Avi Arad, green appears to not be “in” this year. The good folks over at Cinemablend give us this:

Arad says, “It’s a new Hulk, new direction, new size, new color, new attitude. Anything that was done before is not in this movie. It’s a very different kind of Hulk. It’s more of a love story; it’s more of a heroic Hulk. It’s a kind of Hulk we loved in the show, so it’s kind of more influenced by the show than anything else. It’s very human, very touching, and huge action. Louis Leterrier has a unique filming style that will be great here and it’s going to be spectacular.”

Not green? That’s a little strange… but really it’s not that big of a deal. In the comics Hulk was often grey. I’m not an authority on Hulk comics, but if memory serves me correctly, Grey Hulk was far more intelligent than Green Hulk (he could actually carry on conversations with you), however, he was stronger when in his Green form.

Like I said, I really don’t think it makes any difference once the movie starts. Making him Grey (if grey is indeed the color they go with) is probably just another way for them to distinguish this Hulk movie from the last one. What do you think?

  1. Jay,

    LOL, ahh, cool.

Still, I think grey Hulk would of looked cool on film. Ohwell, green again will still kick ass. I just really hope he looks scarrier and cooler then the last run. He was just TOO human looking in the first movie.

  2. I know this is kinda off topic, but I feel like I need to rant here.

The main problem I’ve been seeing with these superhero movies is that they don’t develop the Super Villain enough. If you have a boring, underdeveloped, uninteresting villain, the rest of the movie will fall flat without the conflict, no matter what color the HULK is or who is playing him.

The original Star Wars was great because Darth Vader and the Empire were so cool. The prequels sucked because Darth Maul and battle droids were just silly.

Superman II was great because ZOD and his gang were bad ass. Superman Returns was lame because Luthor and his magic crystal (just add water!) were lame.

The best Star Trek movie was Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan because Khan was a perfect foil for Kirk. Star Trek: Nemesis tried to recreate that and failed because the “Picard clone guy” was lame.

See what I’m getting at? A Super Hero movie is only as good as the villain the hero fights against.

Origin movies can sometimes get away with it, like the first Spiderman or Superman, because the focus is on how the hero deals with his new powers. But they still feel weaker in the end without that conflict of character. The bad guys always feel tacked on in origin stories. The end of Spiderman was anti-climatic because the Green Goblin looked ridiculous and was defeated so easily. Ghost Rider just plowed through the 2 dimensional demons in his way. The Fantastic Four fought a really lame Victor Von Doom. The second FF movie they turn Galactus into a giant cloud, so you know it will suck. The first Hulk fought some confusing-computer-animated-energy-glob-man/his father. The fight with the dogs was more interesting.

I haven’t heard anything yet about the villain in the new HULK movie, but to me that’s the only thing that will make or break the movie. The villain should be as iconic and memorable as the hero.

  3. Alex, don’t know if you knew this or not, but Lou Ferrigno had a cameo in the Ang Lee Hulk film as a security gaurd, but I agree, he’ll probably be in this one again too.

  4. I liked the original HULK movie, but this one no green??? OH..well, I guess they used up all the green dye and certainly the green was no cash cow.

As long it is not some shiny neon green…I’ll settle for grey.

  5. Alright this is going to be different, but it will be good.

If he’s green then the audience might be confused but some of the more curious ones will go on a website and right a little origin thing about Grey Hulk. But about them being confused about a reboot? People have witnessed these kinds of things before, Batman for example had plenty of reboots {although i would rather hope hulk does not go that far}. I think this movie is going to be great, I loved the first one but This is an opertunity to see someone elses opinion, and I am all up for it.
!!John Campea keep on rolling in the Hulk news!!

  6. I agree. I don’t think the general public will get it (I wouldn’t unless I talked to people, because I’m not a comic book fan at all, I just watch comic book movies occasionally – and I do mean occasionally). Also the coloring issue I think will throw people off as well. And the new actors.

BTW, I thought the first movie was awesome except near the end it got weak.

  7. I may be in the minority here, but I think this whole reboot concept will confuse the shit out of people. The first one came out only a few years ago, and now they are asking us to start over again? I’m all for starting over, don’t get me wrong. I HATE that flick, but the general public won’t get it. The general public doesn’t know much about Hulk except that he’s big and GREEN. If they see a grey thing running around, with a different guy playing Hulk, and nobody from the first movie…..I don’t know. The general public can be stupid at times. They proved that with what they did to Grindhouse.

  8. When I hear comments given by fans in regards to the Hulk TV show from the 70’s, I’m a bit surprised. Yes, there were campy elements in the series, but there were also many human intrest stories as well. The series got Emmy awards, for gosh sakes and ‘it was horrible’? There’s also the idea of Banner being on the lam.

The grey hulk makes a lot more sense to me. It helps separate the two films a bit for starters. Also, as noted Grey hulk had some of Banner’s IQ points still around so it wasn’t all grunts and growls. It would not surprise me if Hulk was (dark) green for part of the film, grey in the next half. Even a stage progression.

I liked the Ang Lee picture, but the main problem was the multi angle view which distracted attention from time to time.

  9. Maybe he’s gone to plaid!

Grey Hulk… OK, I can see that. But most people, when they think of Hulk, they think GREEN. Only comics geeks would be aware of the grey Hulk. I can understand wanting to cut ties with the last film, but this might be going a little TOO far.

  10. See, the comments “It’s more of a love story; it’s more of a heroic Hulk” and “it’s kind of more influenced by the show than anything else” also scare me, since we are talking a GRAY HULK. Gray Hulk opens the door to a lot of comic based storylines, primarily with him being more intelligent, but also more ruthless, i.e. Joe Fixit – Vegas Enforcer, far from a love story or heroic Hulk.

  11. “It’s a kind of Hulk we loved in the show, so it’s kind of more influenced by the show than anything else.”

Please, please, please don’t make it resemble that show. This statement really scares me. There is over 40 years of source material to pull from. Why draw influence from a sub par TV show. And am I the only one that’s tired of comic book movie having to involve a “Love Story”?

  12. ‘Grey’ is what instantly popped into my mind too when I read that, but as some people have pointed out, it could just be another shade of green.

HOWEVER, if the Hulk isn’t gray OR green then they’re really going in a strange and perhaps initially upsetting direction, and that would be very big news.

  13. “It’s a kind of Hulk we loved in the show, so it’s kind of more influenced by the show than anything else.”

If you are going to make a ‘comic book’ movie, base it on the comic books for gods sake. It’s not really that hard. Instead of an epic, comic inspired Hulk smash spectacular we are going to get a movie remake of an average 70’s tv show. Lou Ferrigno will get a cameo – wait and see.

  14. yo to be honest im happy he is grey i liked those comics the best….the ones where he teams up with wolverine(fanboi alert lol)

i jut cant wait..i love hulk and ed norton

  15. the comments “It’s more of a love story; it’s more of a heroic Hulk” and “it’s kind of more influenced by the show than anything else” scare me more than a color change. But hopefully Norton can save it, the guy is one hell of an actor.

  16. I completely agree with Zac. I thought the exact same thing. Just because he said “new color” doesnt mean ‘not green’. I think if he were less “grass green” and a bit more green/gray that would make it seem more “believable”, if you will.

One of my problems with the first film was that at times, Hulk looked way too cartoony. I didnt think “Wow, there’s a Hulk running around.”, i thought “Wow, there’s a big ol’ CGI cartoon Hulk running around”.

    If that makes any sense.

  17. First, I am one of the few fans of the first Hulk movie. Being a rather large comic aficionado, I had some problems with it, but I still liked it quite a lot. That said, I’m not unhappy with the news that this new Hulk film will have little to nothing to do with the previous one. I’m certainly happy to hear about the addition of Edward Norton, who is my all time favorite actor. I do, however, have to say that I think the change of color from green to gray is a terrible decision. The Hulk was originally supposed to be gray, but a coloring error early on in the comic book series was responsible for the switch to green. He reverted to gray later on in the series, and the gray version of the Hulk was able to maintain his sanity and intelligence despite being a hulking beast. That’s all fine and good for the comic, but if the Hulk is intelligent in the movie, I believe that completely destroys the character for anyone who isn’t a know-it-all comic fan like myself. Beyond all that, though, the simple fact is that if the average movie-goer knows one thing about the Hulk, it is this: Hulk = Green. If they take that away, something tells me there will be a colossal backlash against the film based on the confusion of the average Joe. Just my opinion.

  18. I’m actually a fan of the first one as well. I think Roger Ebert said it best when he said that it was “a comic book movie made for people who don’t watch comic book movies.” But yes, I agree. Green, Grey, whatever. It really doesn’t matter (to me). Ed Norton is great, and the director definitely knows how to do action. So, I’m sure it’ll be a fun movie.
