M. Night Shyamalan To Direct Next harry Potter? Not A Chance

The word going around right now is that M. Night Shyamalan may be tagged to direct the next (after the one already in production) installment of the Harry Potter franchise. This has a bunch of people pretty excited.

Even though I’ve recently developed a really bad taste for Shyamalan, I still like him as a director and thing him helming a Potter flick would be a pretty good match. Except… no way is this EVER EVER EVER going to happen. Why won’t it happen? First read what our good friends over at Cinema Blend report Shyamalan said about doing it:

“You know, that Harry Potter dance has gone on a long time. The problem is that it is a living breathing thing now, all by itself. When it comes over to my camp, it needs to be kind of handed over, adoption papers and everything. That’s a tricky move,”

So basically what Shyamalan is saying is that he wants total control over the film. He doesn’t want to get anyones approval for things he wants to do in the film and be free to do whatever he wants.

There is no way in hell that JK Rowling is going to let that happen. Not over her dead body.

Would I be interested in seeing M. Night direct Harry Potter? Sure, that could be interesting. But it’ll never happen as long as he wants full control. Nor should he get it.

  1. M.Knight is a hack. Didn’t anyone see The Village! I’m too much of a Potter fan to ever want to see him touch this film, which Order of the Phoenix happens to be in my opinion, the best one of the lot.

  2. Uh, no. I don’t believe that he will end up directing any of the HP franchise because, in his own words, he won’t be able to have complete control. That, and didn’t he just slam someone from Disney in a book for lack of support for authentic visionaries? What makes him think the makers of the HP franchise are any different? Just because we haven’t heard stories to support my theory doesn’t mean it isn’t so.

  3. HA HA HA don’t make me laugh please. If he does it i so won’t go see it. I’m a fan of the the potter films, and some of M. Night, but no to directing potter! it would be so bad.

  4. He’d ruin it. Isn’t this the guy who’s still been limping along on his “Sixth Sense” rep while producing one disaster after another? I mean has anyone seen the trailer for the laughable “Lady in the Water” complete with young child whispering in voice over? Aaaahahahahaha. Yeah, that’s gonna be a great movie.

  5. I can see the trailer now

“From *acclaimed, world renouned* director M. Night Shamylan, who has brought us such masterpieces as The 6th Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, and The Village comes…..”

(sound familar? this is pretty much what the first half of the Lady in the Water trailer (that ran before Superman Returns) said)

  6. Ok for any of the previous Harry Potter films I would totally agree with you. However, I could TOTALLY see M. Night take a shot at “The Half Blood Prince” The book has a serious sense of foreboding and a tension that he would absolutely be able to bring across. Besides, even if he did it, dont expect to see a movie that would be VISUALLY that much different from the previous potter films. The cast is set in stone, the art direction has to mesh with the previous films. Same goes for the music. And the story is already pretty much set. The only real way Shamalyan could make his mark on a Potter film would be in the cinematography and in the editing room. Personally I think his input on “the half blood prince” would be awesome. Though he’s definetly not right for any of the other books, Im VERY glad he didnt get to do the first movie.

  7. i am willing to give him a chance, but then he needs to accept that he can’t change everything and have total control. I actually think Alfonso Cuaron was a odder choice

  8. Would love to see the man do it, but he will have to make serious concessions, what the hell is he thinking, no one is going to give him control or final say on anything, I have no idea why he would even ask, crazy talk.

  9. I’d love to see HP directed by M. Night Shyamalan, but I agree that there is a very little chance of this considering what M. Night Shyamalan said. But, still there is a chance, lets wait. I think he would make a good director of this installment in Potter series and now thing get more interesting in the story too. Well, who knows, mayby JK Rowling will change her mind ;)

  10. I love Harry Potter, and M. Night Shyamalan is my favourite living director. Obviously this sounds great to me.

I had a discussion with my friend years ago, about how much I would love to see Shyamalan take on an established franchise (I brought up Star Trek at that point) and make it his own to create something unique, and to show the god damned hates that not everybody can do the movies he is doing…

When Superman was mentioned I got excited, but that rumor didn’t last long…I hope this comes true.

HP 5 was by far the worst of the lot, so I can see them needing a big name to get audiences back in to see no 6, which was far superior and actually did get me excited to read the conclusion.

  11. He seems like such an odd choice for a kiddie fantasy film. Was this a real possibility at any point, or one of those crazy Kenneth Branagh is Obi-Wan type rumours?

I don’t know how many little ‘uns would sit still for a slow-moving, atmospheric Potter film with a preposterous twist at the end. Mind you, I haven’t read the book. Is that what happens?
