X-Men 3 Reviews

X-Men-3The early X-Men 3 reviews are starting to roll in… they’re actually a little better than I was expecting. At first everything looked like it would be disasterous, with mumblings of lack of proper budget… a rushed shooting schedule… and don’t even get me started about the director fiasco.

Then some images and trailers started to come out, and optimism began to spring forth anew once again. Perhaps X-Men 3 wouldn’t suck as baddly as we all feared it would. Well… it looks like that is indeed the case.

Here are what some critics are saying in their X-Men 3 reviews:

“X-Men: The Last Stand” is a comic book movie that crams in a stunning number of characters while still managing to map out significant emotional underpinnings.”
Cole Smithey, COLESMITHEY.COM

“At least Ratner knows how to handle both action and drama on screen, even if subtlety and substance fall by the wayside.”
Rich Cline, SHADOWS ON THE WALL

“A thrilling third chapter that delves deeper thematically while expanding the universe of franchise characters. Thus far, it’s simply the most X-citing film of 2006.”
David Foucher, EDGE BOSTON

“The stunts are non-stop and we marvel at them all. Yet the heart of this third film about the mutant Marvel comic characters is overtaken by splashy effects.”
Urban Cinefile Critics, URBAN CINEFILE

As fo this moment, X-Men 3 is carrying a 63% on Rotten Tomatoes (Which is by the way 41% HIGHER than Da Vinci Code has… who on earth would have thought that a month ago?)

  1. boys and girls, you obv dont understand..

The “cure” was a tempory cure.. Mystique had already started to regain her powers, hence why she helped out and gave the goverment the wrong location. Magneto is regaining his powers, as will rogue! and the Dr is not dead, remeber the guy in the coma he was teaching about, about transfering a person into another, he has done that. if there is another movie, which there should be all this will be clear..

  2. As the trilogy comes to and end you would expect good things but i’m afraid as a loyal x-men cartoon fan that this film didn’t get me excited don’t get me wrong the fight scenes were brilliant but who had to cast Vinnie Jones! What a pointless character he was! Also Scott he was only in the film a few mintues then never seen again. I wasn’t sure about Kelsey Grammer but i actually liked his performance which surprised me! Overall this film was adequate not as good as the first two x-men, the director has let this film and fans down.

  3. I CAN’T BELIEVE THOSE RETARDS KILLED CYCLOPS…I WANT YOU ALL TOO KNOW THAT THE ONLY WAY I’M GOING TO SEE THIS PIECE OF **** IS AT A MATINEE SO I CAN SPIT AT IT. SHAME ON MARVEL FOR EVER LETTING IT BE PRODUCED AND DIRECTED BY SUCH UNINSPIRING, LAZY IDIOTS. IF ANYONE TOOK THE TIME TO READ THE PHOENIX’S SAGA AND STUCK WITH THAT STORY…WELL IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A MUCH DIFFERENT, BETTER MOVIE…SHAME ON MARVEL…

  4. X-men are real!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can call my friends on the phone satnding 20 feet away from the reciever. It a cordless but it doesnt make a difference. I can also punch through a building. so what if its legos.

  5. I don’t kno is this was already been said, but im really pi**ed that they killed off cyclops. Firstly i think he’s cool. secondly he is lyk one of the main x men. Thirdly in the comic after xavia died cyclops was surpposed to lead the rest of the mutants. THey should stay tru to the actually comics.so this means that the pheonix should have the kick ass costume and fire. Also they shoudn’y of taking away rogue s powers. i FIND A CRIME AGAINST THE ACTUAL X MEN. and when is she surpposed to get her super stregnth and flight. To me i think theyv’e ruined the story. Good film though!!!
hope theres a fourth one where they can fix all the thinqs they skrewed up. e.g cyclops, rogue, mystique and kick halle berry off it. my god she can act and wrecked the movie because she thought storm should get a bigger part. There was to much goin on. ThATS all i have to say.

  6. i’m disappointed with this. With Xavier and Cyclops dyng. Wasn’t he meant o marry jean any way? Also Magnteo lossing his powers was stupid he is maent to be a really powerful mutant. Also (this relates to X1) killing of sabertooth was a bad idea. Saberooth had so much potential. They should of made a 4th of a Apopolycse.
But it had good fight scenens.

  7. I really really want them to make another one BECAUSE they messed up the third one so bad. well.. all in all it was a great movie… if some of your favorite characters werent totally eliminated… I was just left so unsatisfied that i need more closure.I so want jean, scott and even dr. x to come back.. the problem is : how many times can you bring a girl back to life? why did it have to be this way!

  8. Umm…i really liked the film…and I think everyone complaining needs to relax, because obviously there will be a fourth. I think that number three and four are the same movie…BUT…they are too long to be one movie…so they split it up, so next time will be more explanation, and more character devolopment, and HOPEFULLY gambit, because he is number one in my book…OH and also i was readin all the posts, and some guy named DONALD was complaining about how his 10 year old son was startled by the vulgor used by some characters…PST…the movie is rated Pg-13…was your 10 year old son startled by the blood in Hostel???

  9. Looking at all of the reviews, it’s nice to see a wide range of people reviewing..

It is however sad to see that half of them seem to be barely educated..

I agree with people saying it was a huge variation from the comic books (or more generally, the original source material) but I don’t necessarily see that as a bad thing..

Juggernaut – Well he was a mutant in this, but was also in X-Men Evolution and the Crystal of Cyttorak (sp?) was described as a gem that would advance the mutations..
Surely having the Juggernaut as a mutant is far more believable than having him as something of basic magic..

Having never explained that Xavier’s mother remarried etc it would seem slightly pointless adding in an extra plotline of them being related..

As to Cyclops dieing.. well Marsden wasn’t exactly a good Cyclops..

Wolverine- I agree with Phoenix, “Xavier has tamed you”, surely when Xavier “died” Wolverine would have started hitting stuff not started blubbering more so than Storm.
The only time we saw a closer Wolvering was the fight in the woods..

  10. i just watched the film and i thought it was amazing!! the ending was pretty sad but i didnt really like scott anyway so i wasnt bothered, also if you had stayed till after the credits theres an extra bit! my sister heard it on the radio and we waited and you know xavier!? he isnt dead he put himself inside that guy like he was saying whilst teaching the students!! not sure if this has been said

  11. Hey, everyone’s talking about a sequel to this last movie. Does that mean that the movie was made just to a have a sequel to it? I mean, man, where’s the story in that? That is just really a bad way to make a movie! Anyway, I thought the movie really lacked the true essence of a story, a great plot and a superb ending! Hanging endings are for people who can’t make up their minds on what to do next!!!!!! But nevertheless, excellent special effects! Though, we all should expect this (special effects) because of the technology that we have right now!

  12. Well, overall i think it was a great movie!
I’m not a huge comic fan but Xmen and Spiderman are the only ones i watch. Xmen is the greatest though! I was a little disappointed that Cyclops was taken out of the movie so fast, he had so much potential, he was the successor the of Xavier School! Rogue, another character that has potential, i wish they would have focused more on the original Xmen team rather than just briefly mentioning the characters. I think we would be able to feel for the characters more if we knew more about their past and how their powers affected them. Still, such a bummer that Rogue and Cyclops did not recieve big roles. Another thing, Storm and Wolverine looked really weak in X3! I thought since they were the most senior mutants at the school they would be more powerful! I almost cried when Jean killed Xavier, he tried to help her and was with her since she was a little girl, i can’t believe it! I don’t know who is reading this but i hope someone will reply to me and comment on my comments.
The ending of X3 was alright, but how does Magneto gain his power back ?? It’s so stupid if he did because everythign will just go back to where it began! It’s cool how Xavier took over that man’s brain in the end.

** Mortis, what kind of connections did u see throughout the 3 movies about Xavier teaching?

  13. If you watched the very last second before the credits you would see that Magnito started getting his powers back, which means mystique will also. Also if you watch after the credits you will see all the X-men who died not all of them are really dead.

  14. i think the movie was the worst movie id ever saw. I mean that the movie was a complete waste of time of no plot leading no where. By that i mean if they wanted to kill the professor and the x-mens and revive them back in x-men 4, then why make movie number 3 in the first place. apIt is a total letdown and disointment. There is no casts of the “true” x-men participating in the movie i.e. cyclopes, rogue. the movie was so horrible that i left without seeing the credits :O. this movie was just pointless, and the entire point of the movie was the mutants can killing each other, because they never got the kid(which was boogus), and all the mutants died and lost their powers for no typical purpose. you should still watch the movie if you want to watch the next x-men movie(i never said not to watch the movie :P). Why? because the x-3 ONLY provided three reasons: the kid who can “cure” mutants, and the deaths of many mutants ( Mainly x-mens), and magneto and mystique losing their powers.

  15. The only reason why I can see Angel being is this movie is for character development. This is so that when (not an if) they make the next movie they will have Angels character for Apocalypse to transform into the Angel of death then ark angel.
If this isnt the case then what was the point of having him in this movie? He did nothing.

I wont repeat what most of the other comments said, but this movie should have done some more character develpment, i.e. should have shown that some mutants can be related, it is possible! Spike is Storms nephew and I dont think that she would have hit him with lightening, but she did. Juggernaught is Xaviers half brother, he hates him, so I dont think he would have just let him pass him by. Plus juggernaught hated all mutants so he wouldnt have worked for Magneto. I guess the movies can have their own characters, but if they do this then leave the animated series and the comic book characters alone and dont use their background.

  16. What happened after the credits, coz ma pal told me 1 of the 3 dead ppl, ctclops, proffeser xavier and phoniex, one of them ,u see one come bak alive.

  17. Personally, I am very disappointed with X-Men 3: The Last Stand. The director did not learn from the fact that Fantastic Four and the Incredible Hulk steered too far from the original comics and it cost them. I found the same problem with X-Men 3. The director should have done his homework before messing around. Here are the top 10 things I hated about X-Men 3:
While my 10 year old son loved X-Men 1 & 2 tremendously, he was startled by the steamy scenes between Jean and Wolverine and the swear words used by Juggernaut and Mystique.
Everything was rushed and too much happened in too little time
In comics, irrespective of Jean’s state of mind, she would never hurt Scott.
This director is totally off with Callisto’s powers. For the other readers, here is a synopsis of Callisto’s powers:
    Powers
Callisto has heightened strength, agility and reflexes, augmented by her tentacles, which can adhere to any surface. Her five senses are superhumanly augmented. She has particularly good night vision.
    Abilities
Callisto is a natural-born leader, huntress, and fighter skilled in virtually every form of hand-to-hand combat.
    Weapons
    She frequently employs throwing knives.

Juggernaut is Xavier’s brother. Apparently, the director did not know this while my son’s comment in the movie was, “Why didn’t Juggernaut even say, “Hi brother!”.”
Juggernaut is not a mutant. His powers are mystical, which he got from the Crystal of Cyttorak. Hence, his powers should not be cancelled by this new mutant who has the ability to make other mutants “normal”.
If Jean and Scott and dead, I guess there is no Cable (Nathan Gray).
When Jean powered up, there were no lights around her persona signifying the Phoenix (bird).
Just like is X-Men 1 & 2, this director still has not captured Wolverine’s fighting ability. Maybe if he reads this he will know that Wolverine and Beast have similar fighting ability. At least they got Beast right. Jeez!!
Magneto is so powerful, he did not need to use the golden Gate Bridge to get the other mutants over to the island. He could have enveloped them is a magnetic force field and get them all there.
Anyway, with the death of Xavier, let’s see if they will fix it by bringing Bishop from the past to prevent the death of Scott, Jean and The Professor in X-Men 4. Remember, if Xavier is dead, then no one will be able to stop Apocalypse!! Nuff said!!

  18. I loved the first 2 X-Men but this 3rd installment left me cold! They should not have changed directors because this new one really screwed up the story. If they do make a 4th movie, they really need to bring Singer back. In this new movie, they gave way too much time to Storm. I remember reading somewhere that Halle Berry threatened to not return because she was not getting enough face time in the X-Men movies. Back then I was hoping she would come back because she had been an integral part of the first 2 movies but in this 3rd, she is shown way too much at the expense of the other characters. I now wish she had decided not to be in the 3rd one. I hate that they killed off major characters in the movie. It was really not necessary to the storyline. I have to say though that my absoloute favorite part of the movie was the make-out scene between Wolverine and Jean Grey. That was HOT! Too bad it was so short. In the end, it’s a movie I would recommend for it’s entertainment value but really should have been done much better for X-Men fans. Any future X-Men films need to be longer in length with more attention to character developement and storyline plot.

  19. My thought on Mystique wanting vengence on Magnito. I think maybe Mystique started to get her powers back and talked to Magnito. Why else would Magnito leave multiple man at the base to distract the army and have them miles away when they did there attack on Alcatraz. It almost seems like he wanted Mystique to tell the army where the base was so he could send them on a wild goose chase to only find Multiple Man and he could be free to stage his attack with most the army far away. Just a thought.

  20. Was that a X-men movie I just watched yesterday? I mean, all the characters were there but the story was all wrong. Wait a second. Where the hell was Nightcrawler? As the movie unfolded, I found my self becoming more and more disappointed as the film went on. The killing of Cyclops was huge f-up in the beginning. Why did they have to kill him?!! It was a total slap in the face to off him in that way. I could go on and on. Bottom line is that the writers had no clue what the X-men were all about. How could Marvel put their seal of approval on such garbage?!! I love the X-men. The movie totally ruined it for me.

  21. I really enjoyed the movie. as for the bummers everybody keeps talking i don’t agree that they are all bummers. Scott is never truly found to be dead not that i particularly liked comci or mive wise still theres hope for him. Charles obvioulsy not dead i people didnt always rush out of the movie theatres you would know that. Mystique and rogue losing there powers shouldnt be permanent being that Magneto is getting his back. I doubt Mystique will go back to Magneto anyway being he betrayed her soooooo badly. I agree that their spin of the phoenix is slightly better not to mention less tiem consuming but i was a little bothered that they didnt give her the whole fire bird look but her power scenes were incredible. Ofcourse jean is coming back if they make a fourht movie the phoenix cant really die. I found it funny that in the official game of the movie nightcrawler is a character but not in the movie. Im hoping that if they make a new movie Apocalypse is the villain. He was a major part of the comics. I think the movie shouldve been longer but i cant balme them im sure the SFX were expensive. My last comments are for the ass kicking storm although in the comics shes is a bit more african goddess less urban chic i think she was definitely one of the better characters (in terms of writing) of the movie. All in all a good movie and i will always have hope for X4!!

  22. I thought this movie was really good. I went and saw it twice because the first time I did not wait after the credits, and found out later online there was a hiddin ending. I also didnt see the chess peice move slightly at the end the first time which shows the cure is not permanent. I was bummed to see Mystique lose her powers then the professor die and Magneto lose his powers also all really bummed me out at first. Seeing Magneto move that peice made it all better showing he can be back along with Mystique, and the hidden ending shows Professor Xavier can be back also. Xavier will probably not be Patrick Stewart any more which kinda sucks but I can give a new guy a chance. I dont really mind that Cyclops is gone he is no where near the top of my list as favorites. This movie is so worth seeing it opens way to a much better fourth movie which will probably be so awesome and needs this movie to be the way it is to make the next be so great. I hope it will all be worth it and look forward to the next one. I dont expect it to follow the comic exactly and dont mind that it didnt, it could have been longer but it was still agreat movie. I suggest going and seeing this movie I will probably be going again before it leaves the theater.

  23. …And as a reply to Brick…watch the beginning of X3 when Charles is teaching the class about Mutant Ethics. He shows a video of Moira McTaggert, an essential character in the comic book series (actually I think she’s suppose to be Russian, and the sister of Pete, or Colossus). Anyway, he mentions that the incapacitated victim in the hospital bed is unable to operate because he is brain dead, but the body still works (organs, veins, etc.). Then he says “Is it immoral to transfer the mind of, oh let’s say “a 40-year-old father of four” into the mind of this man. Then he stops because he senses the Pheniox. At the ending credits, it shows Moira walk into the same hospital room where the incapacited man is laying, then he turns his head (without showing his face) and he says “Hello Moira”, and she replies (while studdering) “C-Charles?” and the screen goes blank. This obviously means that the beginning is essential to his “death” and the end of the movie. And a more important note, this means that there is/should be a 4th X-Men movie. If there isn’t, it would be a terrible ending to a fantastic X-Men trilogy. If one comes out, I estimate anthor 3 years, so we’ll see them in 2009, and hopefully with the first director (SORRY BRETT)

  24. Honestly, for a comic book movie, this was one of the most awaited since X-Men 1 came out in 2000. As a finale, it cannot be, but because of the significant events throughout the movie, there should (scratch that) BETTER be a forth. The story still has more to tell, it can’t possible end. Overall 10 as a movie, but a 6 as a finale to a legendary comic book.

  25. I thought this X Men was very good, actually. I really loved it. I do think it might have benefited from some extra screen time, but I thought the heart was there, despite what others may say. It is a very emotional film, perhaps more so for the fans who are particularly fond of the characters, and the special effects are amazing. The first time I saw it I left during the end credits, however, I received a tip-off, and decided to see what came after the credits the second time I saw it. I was very happy, of course. There is much reason to believe they will continue with the X Men journey, and I surely hope they do. It seems the professor is not gone forever – how could he be, after all? As for the other killed off characters, however, I think it would seem rather inappropriate to bring them back. And the cure, it seems, is not as permanent as everyone thought. I only worry what will become of poor Bobby Drake the next time he tries to take advantage of his girlfriend’s new found accessibility.

  26. Lol too true mini, I mean to say 180 :P thanks for correcting me so I didnt look totally dumb arse. I sorta agree with you, I didnt feel the deaths were too bad(im not caring who they killed off so much as why)just they had little to no purpose, but I am sorta glad cyclops is dead, it was a weak character through the whole series next to what it should have been.

  27. Well, Scott was never actually shown dying, he just wasn’t where Logan and Storm went to find him anymore (though his glasses were). He was likely an off-screen victim, but since they never actually showed it, it leaves room to manuever, if they wish. Xavier is a little tougher, as his body was destroyed, and all that remains (seemingly) is his mind… Maybe there is a way to return his body, or maybe he becomes Onslaught… I think the way they left it with him being somewhat dubious a character to block out part of Jean’s mind is not the way you want to remember him, so I’m sure he will be redeemed. Last I heard, this movie ties up the trilogy, but there may still be another film… It was in an article in recent edition of a magazine I was thumbing through (~’X-Men 3 puts the X in Sex’ was the article/cover story, but can’t recall the magazine–it had two varient covers, each one with 3 X-characters, centered with either Jean or Storm). Anyway, it was just on the shelf a week or so ago, so it should still be at your local bookstore, if you are interested in reading it.

  28. hey, this movie was a good movie and all, but what really sucked was that xavier died, he was the main part of the whole thing i mean come on, but so did scott, and the worst was that jean died, i mean ya she deserved it but im pritty sure that dident happen in the comics.

the biggest thing about this is that they have to make another one, the reason y is because it left it so blank. i mean the cure for mutains is still alive and megnito has his powers back, so wouldent the humans still want to cure the mutains especially after what jean did, and wouldent megnito want to kill the humans. the movie basically went in a circle bc the humans still have the cure and magnito stll has his powers, and that would also mean that rogue and all the other mutaints that lost tere powers get them back.

and at the end of the movie after the credets, does that mean that xavier isent dead, which is amasing but does that mean that scott isent dead eather, this movie did not clear n e thing up at all and there better be another one

  29. hey everyone i just wanted to say i loved the movie even though it was a little short and i hope they make another they left it opened because magneto was starting to move metal again at the end so there is hope even though the title implys something diferent i mean the last stand it sounds so sad *tear* ps angel was asume even though he was not on screne as long as some would have hoped
    kagome(i cant spell)

  30. Well, I liked it (like anyone cares) but for those who are upset over who “died” and who was “cured” please note that everyone (important) who died was “killed” by Phoenix. Everyone who’s been to the back of Barnes and Noble knows that Phoenix doesn’t really permanently “kill” anyone important.

And Leech (or any liquids taken from him) never permanently “cures” anyone. Beast got his furry hand back, Mags is on the rebound already after four doses etc. Scott can come back, Jean can come back, Rogue can get her powers back, Mystique can get her powers back, the varoius B-listers that Phoenix dismantled can come back. Heck, they can even mention in X4 that Juggy is Chuck’s half-bro and that McCoy is also a doctor etc.

It’s make-believe people, anything can happen.

I can totally get with people who felt it was too short or rushed or who didn’t like the directions they took with some of the characters, but the franchise is fine.

Wolvie with have his own flick (maybe with Kitty?) and so will Maggs (prequels both maybe?).

All it would take to bring everyone back from the “dead” is for the prof to use his new host (lol for anyone who ducked out during the credits) to plug into cerebro and “find” Scott and anyone else Phoenix vaporized. And then Mags can fiddle with his machine plans from X1 and speed up the return of his powers and anyone else that was “cured”. Or they can just come back on their own between movies.

Don’t get me wrong, the passion shown here is fantastic (oops – that’s a bad choice of words for comics/movie fans). Just don’t give up on the franchise. Wait for the DVD and commentary/deleted scenes and by then X4 will be in pre-production anyway.

BTW – noticed they did a 180 (not a 360 kids – that’s complete circle returning to where you started) on Wolvie’s “you might not come back, she might not come back” speech. Liked the first one better I think.

  31. SPOLIERS!!!!!
The first two movies felt flat to me and mostly dull, sure they were good movies but I am not a fan of how much Singer toned it down.
This movie is a total 360, from the flat drawn out direction of Singer, to the hectic and cramped style of Ratner, a total flip…and it landed on it’s face.
    The crap…
The pacing of the movie is just stupid, the deaths for the most part are meaningless(or used to drive the plot for lack of better writing). The Juggernaut and Multiple man joining the brotherhood scenes are just idiotic(MM joins just because Magnus asks him and Jugg cause he was let out so he could pee…). Angel is introduced so dramatically and then just dissapears until 2 very short scenes at the very end. The Morlocks are effectivly wasted, Callisto has a few rockin fight scenes but is changed from morlock leader to Magnetos tracking dog for the movie role. Multiple Man, a character with so much potential for some awesome fight scenes serves as a decoy. Psylocke is given the glorious role of “Morlock Lackey”, and then killed in the end for no apparent reason. Alot of the wire work is utterly pathetic. Pyro Just shoots jets of fire, no creations. The treatment of the Phoenix explanation, remove the shi’ar/fiddle a bit with the origin so it isn’t too far out there, but FFS leave it as a force possessing her, not some “bad Jean” pissed at the world.
    The Good…
Storm kicks ass, a stronger storm is presented, both in presence and power. Iceman ices up and I loved the look. The beast is great, it isnt the scientist/doctor we all know from most the comics but is works, and the blue fur really works in the film I thought. Magneto owns and it was nice not to see him near collapse after moving the bridge like I believe Singer would have had him do(he wouldnt have had the bridge scene though I guess :P). The Juggernaut suit, besides the helmet I thought it really worked and I totally hated the pics of it. Rogue choosing the cure, she would have in the comics and TV series’ I believe, she has always struggled hard with her power. We get to see Jones again :) I also loved Kitty Pryde’s actor, I think they nailed that choice, petite, cute and sassy.
Thats all I can remember. Basically I hated most of it, but a few gems shine from it, I am just praying the Directors cut DVD is about 2 hours long if not a little more so Ratner can win over some of the fanboi crowd, I think he showed promise, he just needs to make it a bit more relaxed pace wise and delve into introduced characters beyond a 2 minute intro scene.

  32. no rogue turned metal because colosus touched her so she absorbed his power and turned metal anyways i thought it was alright i dont know why scott died and was kinda hoping that some other characters like jubilee or gambit would show up but it was cool you had to see the last part after the credits if you didnt see it go see it again and maybe youll change your mind

  33. First of all I would like to point out that Stan “The Hack” Lee Never created the X-Men, or Spiderman, and pretty sure any other comic in the Marvel library besides his failed Savage comic. If anyone remembers. Jack Kirby is rolling over in his grave right now.
This movie left me wishing I still had my 20 bucks back. At least my kid liked it, but he’s 5 and don’t know any better. I know some of you are focused on a sequel and they may bring them or some of them back, but it never should have been the case. Why ruin a perfectly good 4th movie on crap that should have never happened in the first place. This movie had so much potential, but it was a big letdown for alot of people. Oh, the screw ups how do I count the ways. The very fact the they turned the Phoenix into an alternate personality of a schizophrenic is a complete 360 from what she is supose to be and by looks of the second movie no where near what they had in mind. The last movie was gearing toward the actual Phoenix charactor, with the flames and sudden power surges and even the silohette of a bird below the water at the end. This one made me want to vomit. They didn’t even give Cyclops real part in the movie. They treated him like a throw away charactor. He might as well have been one of the Tattoo freaks some people call Morlocks. Which not many of them looked like any of the Morlocks i’ve ever seen in a comic. Juggernaught was retarded, no mention of him being Proffessor’s half brother and he is not a mutant. The helmet looked like he carved it out of a rock. Collosus don’t speak with a russian accent, but that kinda bothered me from the second movie. And he did something in the danger room he can’t do. He turned Rogue “I believe” metal with him to protect them from a rocket or debri. Crap, Crap, Mega Crap. And they killed Xavier, I mean what the poop was that all about. He is the back bone of the X-men, with out him it’s not worth doing another movie. Especialy if they bring him back as some other guy. NOT THE SAME. It’s like hanging out with a group of friends when your best friend isn’t there,…. AWKWARD. After all the sequal screwups in the past you would think people would learn their lesson. But I think they sit around and think of ways they can make people mad with out loosing money. The writers and director and who ever approved of this movie at the studio needs a big smack in the face, oh and fired. I can live with a few changes here and there lord know I did for the first two movies. I let them slide and loved the movies for what they were. But they took it toooooo far and just alienated me. There are a few other Tard mistakes I won’t rant about I.E Rogue, Angel, Multiple Man. But you get my drift. Show me a person who hated it and I’ll show you a true comic fan. For the rest of you enjoy, cause you don’t know any better or care.

  34. Well i saw it last night and i loved it. So glad i stayed after the credits. So many hidden messages in that movie. Im wondering if there is going to be a fourth one. its possible with all the unfinished things. What with Magneto, Mystique. i think she’s going to want revenge on Magneto. I wish Angel was in it more, he was awsome.
    I LOVE’D IT.

  35. As an X-men Fan from the original comics this movie did flop out from the storyline a bit probably because of the change with directors more than anything. and let me just say that everytime sequels are made and they change any of the main characters/producers the movie either is looked down upon or is just not done. I recall a certain movie “lost in space” made back in, I don’t know 1996?, that was expected to make at least three sequels supossedly with signed contracts by the actors therin to do all three. has there even been a Sequel? NO. However the bright side is their is hope for this sci-fi story yet. sure it may not follow the exact comic but if FOX gets their butts in gear and really takes time on the fourth one and gives us back the original directors of the film the third one can be considered merely a stepping stone in the X-men movie chronicles like Episode 4 or 1 of the Star Wars Trilogy. We simply need to move past it and hope the writers will find a genius way of not only putting more new characters in next time but also finding a beleivable way of bringing characters supossedly dead back into the story. No one can be as perfect as stan lee’s original comic but we should continue to strive for excellence rather than give our audience a short film making the next one the big hit. lets just hope thats the case for us true x-men fans out there.

  36. I Thought this movie was great!

If any of you would of stood after the credits you would of noticed that Xavier is not dead he speaks through the body tht he spoke of in the begining of the movie to the class..tht is the tru ending of the movie not the magnetto moving chess piece..therefore if Xavier is alive cyclops is aswell, and jean dies how many times in the comics an still manages to return so i believe jean will rise again..my only guess is the phoenix sent them to an alter world i 4got the name in the comics sum plane astral plane or sumthin to that nature an tht xavier is using his power to speak through sum1 elses body which makes sense!

As for Rogue first of all she was the worst cast person in all of the movies i thought Rogue was supposed to be sexy anna paquin is n e thing but sexy, no wonder why iceman leaves her for kitty

  37. They totally screwed things up for the X-Men universe. They screwed it up SO bad, that it’s not even funny. BUT, that’s Hollywood for you.

I agree with many of the previous posters. If you’re a fan of the comics, chances are, you’ll boo the movie throughout. Why do you think they never showed Scott Summers get killed by Phoenix during the beginning part of the movie? Cause they know they fucked up. However, if you’re not a fan of the series, you’ll enjoy it just like another sci-fi-ish movie with cool and elaborate effects.

Because of the HUGE cast, many of them got the shaft, and the movie suffered in the area of character development. In the end, this is a movie that’s more about Phoenix killing and going crazy than anything.

I didn’t like it. I believe this is the worst way to kill off a series on the big screen, even though they hinted that Magneto might get his powers back, and that Xavier will return in another man’s body. But, quite frankly, it’s all a sham. Do you see a second Street Fighter out even when they included a tid-bit at the end about Bison not being dead? Of course not. It’s not about what special little twist at the end of the movie… it’s about the movie as a whole. And, as a whole, it was very disappointing.

  38. I just watched the movie last night and I was some what disappointed. Yes, Angel is this movie. He plays a very insignificant role. I was most upset though that they killed off Cyclops, Prof. X, and Jean Grey. I do remember the comic books and the multiple storylines. The only thing that I can figure on is that they are going to make a sequel to this. If those of you remember correctly the vaccine actually creates a virus called the T-Virus. This is a deadly disease that could only be reversed by turning the mutuant gene on. I believe that Cyclops soul is absorbed by Apocolopes which makes the Pheonix look like a pussy cat. As for Prof. X and Jean Grey they go to the Mental Realm and they are trapped by a character called Shadow Beast and the X-Men would need to go into this realm using Cerebro (the device Prof. X uses to tract other Mutuants). Remember that there is hope because of the ending with Magneto. It would be such a shame to end the X-Men movie series on such a bad note. Hopefully, Brian Singer comes back as well. He really did a nice job keeping true to the X-Men comic book series. Well I guess we’ll have to watch and see what happens.

  39. With regards to the depowering of Rogue, surely she would’ve done this in the comics had the cure not been a trick..

The transferrence of Xavier was admittedly predictable (but only when you know there’s a scene after the credits is it obvious.. nearly everyone walked out before lol..)

Can’t say I recall Callisto posessing superspeed, but I could be wrong! Her sensory perceptions were more impressive than I remember too..
Then again, I don’t recall Leech being white.. (he was green?)

The concept of Phoenix being a dual personality was not that bad really.. was a lot more believable than the addition of aliens and the shi-ar.

The killing of mutants.. well at some point they’ve all died lol..

The depowering? I don’t get why people have suggested it’s unfaithful.. House of M anyone? Admittedly that as the Scarlet Witch but still even Xavier is powerless..

Was it me though or were Phoenix’s powers closer to Scarlet Witch’s?

  40. I did not see the movie but was in a theatre today and heard MANY people (mostly guys) say they hated this xman and that brett Ratner ruined it. WHY would they give this movie to him? He is not so talented and leans heavily on his DP’s to make things happen. He should stick to music videos.

  41. Hey everyone hows it going.
Ok, like all or most of you out there who WILL see this movie regardless of what we say or your friends tell you… we are all huge x-men fans. Even down to the point when you taped the phoenix saga on fox when you were a kid. Yes, I was one of those kids too.
Let me start of by saying that I agree with the ones who feel that the movie slipped away from the comics. Its not right, its not justified, but unfortunatley it was done. Than again we all knew that was going to happen by the first 15 min. of the first film.
I didn’t like the way they killed off everybody (sorry I’m not really sure whats going on with the “end of the credits” thing. My dumb ass had to go to work), I felt that they had really important roles, and I would’ve liked to have seen boyscott Cyclops in a little more action than just chillin on his bike, dude has potential, and ya killed him.
Although going along with the other films, I felt it did good. Doing all that introduced new characters and let the old ones retire. Lets face it, we can’t copy Stan’s vision word for word. We’d end up with movies a lot longer than any Blockbuster can hold. But thats it. Thats what we have to keep in mind. This is the time they have to work with (although it could’ve been longer, really guys), but give it a shot.
If you don’t like it, fine, trust me, we all have the same reasons why you don’t like it. If you do, great, you saw a good flick, and you had fun. But if you’re like me, and you’ve seen it. Thought about it. Compared it to others. And feel the same way you did after the other 2; a sence of– that was good, but i wanna see more– than all we can say is that we ALL feel the same way about one thing…….I’d like to see another one, only better than the one before. Just like I felt since I saw the first one. Maybe one day Fox studios will bring in the Apocolypse saga or something. They’ve got a shit loud of room to pick from. But hey, we’re X-Men fans, pickey, stubborn, and set in our ways, Don’t let us TOO much.

  42. Alright, before I say any of this, I need to preface it with that I am a HUGE X-men fan, I’ve liked it since I was a little girl, got hooked by the 80s series, have read LARGE quantities of the comics (and am still collecting), twitch when anyone mentions Evolution, etc.

That said, I really enjoyed this movie. Whatever the actual running time is, it did not feel that short to me. I did think they cut the whole Phoenix thing a little short, given how damned cool it is. And I have to say I’m a bigger fan of the /other/ version of Phoenix. But to those who said there’s no way to do another film, they killed off all the leaders, etc., you obviously didn’t stay for the credits. Which, in my opinion, is kinda rude considering how many people worked on this thing. Not to mention the fact that at the end of the LAST movie they did a clip that hinted at what was going to happen in the next one. I also have to point out that you really need to pay attention to whatever Xavier is teaching in each of the 3 movies. If you do, you’ll see some serious connections.

The other thing I have to say is that if you want an X4, you should go see this movie as many times as you can tolerate. Why? Because if it does as well as the last 2 (grossing $300,000,000 over budget), Fox will reconsider their really stupid ‘we won’t do another one without Wolverine’ ruling. Because if we can prove that the fan base is still there for more movies, they’ll keep making them. And at least Patrick Stewart has said he will do as many movies as there are decent scripts for (I realize this might be difficult, but not as much as you might think).

And seriously, people, it may be a natural part of her in the movies, but Jean is the PHOENIX. How many times has she resurrected herself now? ‘nough said.

  43. I just saw the film and read the reviews after I had seen it. I see two thoughts here, if you are a big special effects fan, you will love this film. However, if you are a big X-men fan, this movie will dissapoint you. I don’t like the fact that they managed to kill off 3 main characters at the end of the film, with no way in sight of their returning. They are the core three, however, the San Francisco Bay Bridge to Alcatraz, was an impressive stunt. I do think they need to change directors, and try another story line. It kind of reminded me of how I felt after seeing the third matrix film, like, well, that could have gone a bit better. However, there is hope. The Batman Begins film can prove that you can take something that has been franchised, and turn it into something better than the original franchisement.

  44. Hypocrisy abounds. I just got back from the film. I liked some of it, but found it hard to determine which side to root for, among other atrocities. The comics never left a doubt. In fact, in each of the hundreds of X-men comic books I read each one quite clearly spelled out who was the scoundrel and why. They never presumed it to be so.

The main premise, and unfortunately the only plotline in this film, was a seemingly clear-cut justifiable and defensive action taken by those who felt threatened that they would be forced to change how God made them. In X-men 3 it would be easier to argue (as Wolverine ironically stated himself) that “often the best defense is a strong offense”. So it is a mystery why the audience should witness why he and his fellow X-men immediately position against Magneto’s freedom fighters.

I fail to see the motivation for the X-men to step in and literally kill mutants in an effort to make certain at all costs these “bad guys” are not allowed to destroy the “cure”. To add further insult, the subsequent hypocritical injection of Magneto. If Wolverine was willing to die to save Jean, why not inject her (and himself if he was so gung-ho about it)? When he and Beast are “victorious” by assaulting Magneto themselves (which I remind you that Charles did not encourage while he was last alive), is the audience expected to cheer this action from our “heroes”??

  45. i knew this was gonna happen the moment they lost Singer and Hayter the moment Fox lost them they were fucked i mean both Bryan and David wanted to do more with Wolverine/Rogue in the third film, i heard Singer and Hayter were seriously thinking of putting Wolverine/Rogue as a couple in the third film if they were involved Zak Penn Simon Kinberg and Brett Ratner should never touch another x-men script again, Anna Paquin gets forced back for x-3 to do what nothing i saw an interview with Anna and she looked so sad like she did not want to promote x-3 if by some maricle they do an x-4 they really need either Singer or Hayter back.

  46. OH MY GOD. X-MEN 3 was definitely the best movie of the trilogy, by far. The special effects were jaw-dropping and simply amazing. So many unexpected things kept happening, it totally kept me guessing. And the last like 5 seconds definitely say there will be a 4th installment, which I am definitely NOT complaining about, becuz there’s no way they can just leave it like that. My god that was a good movie…I could almost cry.

  47. Man o man what a bad movie. The first two were great, especially the 2nd one. But this one just went down hill. Why the hell does xavier die? He’s the most important person who keeps everything together. Cyclops also is part of the main xmen. All I know is Wolverine, Cyclops, Rogue, Jean Grey, Gambit, Beast, Ice Man, Colossus are all part of the true X-men. Beast looked retarted in the movie. And whats up with jean grey. THey could have made it so much better with her turning into the phoenix. And whats up with magneto and the gang meeting up in the woods? I felt like I was watching lord of the rings or something. ANd what about stupid juggernauts helmet? Its supposed to be red and look better then a stupid rock thing. ANd ANgel? what the hell did he do but fly around for 2 scenes?

This movie was really bad and I think X-men is ruined and they shouldn’t even go on with making more. THe only thing to do is take this one out and redo it or something cuz its so bad.

  48. I just saw the movie like 2.3 minutes ago and i thought it was really good especially graphics wise but i was disappointed because rogue is my fav. character and she got totally jipped. she’s such a strong character in the cartoon and comics but she lost her strength in this film. And i get why the director chose to illiminate some characters like cyclops, xavier, and mystique because there are always casualties and losses in war but cmon man. Wolverine was hot and good as usual but i am still in shock about rogue. At least the ending gave me some hope~

  49. OMG i thouhgt this movies was gonna b SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better….wat the hell happend to cyclops….YYYYY did they kill him off he was soo awsome…ooo and angel they made him seem like a big part in the movie but he was barely in it….AND….wheres night crawler wasnt he part of the team now??? and proffeser X y did he die….they director really messed up on this movie…i expected it to b SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much more better…o well ii hope if they ever make another one that they make it better…but overall it was still pretty good

  50. This movie was a heart wrenching crash to x-men fans, def. not what i expected. Angel was over played by the previews, and for gods sake where the hell was Gambit and Banshee!!!!!!!!!!

  51. I truly did enjoy this movie, albeit, it was very short for a movie with this much story line. I think many of the characters could have been expanded such as Ben Foster’s character of Angel. I’m not going to lie, I was disappointed to not see more of him. However, if you’re looking for an entertaining and pretty cool movie, go see it. Don’t depend on other people’s opinions to tell you whether or not YOU will enjoy a movie.

  52. I saw the movie last night, with a million other people, I’m sure, and the whole movie, my mouth was on the floor, its about time Storm had a real fight scene. Lets not forget the ending which led to a 4th installment almost indefinatly.

  53. It was a Brilliant film. I kept getting pissed off some of the things done in it, but then is was totally like “oh my ****ing god, yeah man”
Still can’t believe some parts in it,Mystique, damn it is all i can say. Damn it to hell.
But apart from my one maybe two upsets i loved it. Nearly took my boyfriend’s arm off, it was that good. GO SEE IT PEOPLE

  54. I have been in love with X-men since I was a little girl and I wanted to walk out of this movie. Anyone who knows the X-men comics or characters is going to hate this movie. This movie should only been seen by people who know nothing about X-men. I cried at the end because I felt so bad for Stan Lee; for over fifty years he has been creating storylines, charaters, plots and all his work was pissed down the drain in this movie. The director obviously did not know X-men or the charaters and just hope for anyone who really loves X-men that they skip this third movie.

  55. I just came back from watching it (released today in Australia) and HOLY FUCKING SHIT was this movie AWESOME. I fucking LOVED it – on par if not better than the first two.

Also the staying after credits is totally worth it. I was giddy with excitment coming out the theatre.

  56. this film was horrible, sorry to be the one to disapoint all the fans out there that havent seen it yet, they made it quiet clear in the movie that there wont be another, i was disapointed that they didnt add gambit, it has way to much story for only 97 minutes. I love X-men but this just about wrecked it for me.

  57. Okay, I can understand Fox/Marvel being pissed about the link to the “ending” (or spippet therof) but it’s not like MB put the darn thing up themselves at that Utube or whatsitcalled.
But they didn’t get pissed OFF, did they?

*The podcast is a broken link on myspace.

*the podcast is not on iTunes. (!)

    * the podcast is not here, and neither is the comments page. It was up for a short time – it had to have been, since the front page suggests there was one comment already made. Also, on the myspace Movie Blog ” blog “, someone left a comment regarding the podcast.
    So…it exists…somewhere…

  58. From what I heard, do not expect miracles with this movie. I know someone who saw an advance screening, enjoyed it but nothing special. To many things going on. Sounds like they did what the sudios love to do, cram as many things onto the screen as they can. Besides I heard Rothman wants to end the franchise here, because he feels the X movies are getting to expensive to produce. Thats why he asked for eveery storyline to be crammed in here. To bad too, I was just interested in seeing the phoenix storyline played out but it looks like another studio screwed things up.

  59. Sorry to be the naysayer but, yeah, Aint It Cool are giving it average-to-bad reviews. There’s one or two people who like it but a lot who don’t. Their general opinion seems to be that it’s okay if you don’t care about the comic or the previous films and it’s kinda mediocre.

    Some fun quotes!

“It feels like a twitchy abused child of a film. ” – Harry Knowles.

“Brett Ratner stands on stage, whips out his piece and pisses on each fan individually.” – Massa… worm?

“It’s not a franchise-killer, but it certainly hobbles it.” – Quint

They do have a couple of good things to say about it so it could be a fun night out if you don’t take it too seriously. I’m not really interested in this movie so much but I am curious as to who dies etc because I think X-movies still have a lot to offer and I’d like to see where the series is going. Man, I hope they get rid of Halle Berry.

  60. Since this iis X-Men related and before tonight’s pocast, is it just me or did *something* go “bampf!”?

Was someone contacted to take that “ending” down? Not that I give a fig, but that’s what it appears to be.

  61. I just really hope this film is going to be good but i doubt it, like what Lou_Sytsma said, i dont think there really is going to be much emotion in it. I did see the clip with angel as a boy cutting off his wings which was sad.. and quite manky, but in general the film is going to lack the qualities of the last two films, too many new mutants which have no point to it and old characters were droped out for them to be in it. oh well i just hope im wrong.

  62. Despite all the bad reviews and predictions on the film, I’m still ranking this as the film I been waiting on all year. This film will make money on opening weekend. BECAUSE in order to review it bad you need to pay money to see it. So this film might suck but it will make money. Count On It, as well as Superman

  63. Well rest assured that Harry Knowles and his posse at ‘ain’t it cool news’ still think it’s a disaster. I’m expecting to be entertained by it if nothing else. The only thing bugging me is the 90 minute running time (minus credits). That is not right for a movie of this scale with that many characters.

  64. So far, this is the movie I’m most excited about. I’ve been avoiding watching too many clips because I DO want to be slightly surprised when I watch it (I’m even skipping the clip that was just posted! – Thanks for the spoiler alert John!).

I’m looking forward to the special audio edition tonight – I’m just hoping there aren’t too many spoilers!

  65. I am not convinced that the emotional underpinnings are there. Too many characters battling for precious screen time. Did I hear right? This thing is a piddly 97 minutes long?

And then there is the whole pedestrian nature of Ratner’s directing abilities…
