Sir Anthony Hopkins To Play Hitchcock?

Once again, Anthony Hopkins looks to play legendary director Alfred Hitchcock in a bio-pic film that focuses on the making of ‘Psycho’. First Showing gives us:

The book that ‘Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho’ is based on, first published in 1998, tracks how Hitchcock, at the height of his game as a director, decided to make a “lowly” horror movie. No studio wanted to touch it initially so Hitchcock scrounged for financing by himself. And the rest is history. At the center of the John McLaughlin (Black Swan) script is the relationship between Hitchcock and his wife Alma Reville.

Hopkins previously had his own project ‘Alfred Hitchcock Presents’ in the works, but it went nowhere. Here’s another chance.

It’s not that this isn’t great subject matter. It is. The big question for me here is how much interest common day filmgoers may have in the possible film, even if Hopkins signs on. Film buffs love hearing stories of how our director heroes took on studio politics- but such struggles dramatized will only draw in a select few, I fear.

What’s your take?

  1. Are you saying people won’t want to see this movie because it will be dramatized? or because people won’t have an interest in a movie about Hitchcock?

Biopics are always dramatized and usually do pretty well for themselves. RKO 281 was great btw, Me & Orson Welles is another great film.

  2. It’s quite an interesting take. It sure do be an oscar bait in the making.
Hitchock is a briliant yet enigmatic personality, wonder why there aren’t not or if any movie about him before? Sir Anthony Hopskins has all it takes to be this heavy character, and he definitely need to as his recent flicks didn’t show much of his best.
It remind me of a movie awhile ago about another brilliant director Orson Welles (playing with spades by Liev Schreiber) during his Citizen Kane project, the controversy and struggle and all that stuff. It’s a pretty good movie. Therefore, i’m all in for another storytelling on what inside a great director’s mind in his struggling and perseverance on bringing his landmark or highlight project alive.

    1. The film you’re referring to is “RKO 281”, right? Great film, and this also has the potential to be in the same league, if not better. Hopkins is certainly a good choice for Hitchcock – not in terms of looks, but in terms of acting ability (much like Langella playing Nixon). Looking forward to this one!
