Cruise in Top Gun 2?

Remember the days full of sunglasses and shirtless volleyball playing? Those were the days. Well, how about going back to them? Mmm yes, I’m serious. Apparently, Jerry Bruckheimer and Tom Cruise are talking about a possibly making a Top Gun 2.

CinemaBlend reports:

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer tells MTV that there have been attempts in the past to get a Top Gun sequel done. Cruise was even actually involved at some point, but it never quite happened.

Now though, Bruckheimer says interest in a Top Gun 2 has been renewed. After being recently approached about the possibility of a sequel he explains, “We kicked around some ideas because the aviation community has completely changed since we made the movie a long time ago. So we have to find a way in and how to incorporate the Maverick character into it.”

Wow. Talk about flashbacks. I adore Top Gun. It’s one of those movies that every man HAS to see. If you’ve never seen it, you ned to get on it ASAP. But going back that material? I just don’t know. I won’t lie, I’m intrigued and a little excited at the idea of revisiting Top Gun with Cruise back on the lead. But what possible story could you do that could work? Isn’t Cruise too old to be a fighter pilot? Hasn’t the aviation industry changed a lot the last 25 years? I wouldn’t want it to be just a cheesy overworked plot that puts him training now a younger generation. That’s just not worth the time and effort, at least for me. We’ll see…

What do you guys think?

  1. I’m excited about this! I would like to see Tom Cruise back in the film, but as a lesser role. Possibly as a trainer to new pilots.

I really hope they use real fighter planes to make it like the 1st one.
I would hate to see a film like this made of CGI.
The original has been a timeless film because it was all raw footage.

  2. Spielberg said that Cruise’s character from war of the worlds was how Maverick would be if things didn’t quite work out for him, so I say that’s a great way to go, having a very talented and cocky pilot now in a middle life crisis realizing things didn0t turned out as he hoped.

  3. IceMan is now a Top Gun instructor, for some reason dog fighting is required again and as the best pilot for flying by the book who better to train new recruits, conflicts arise and IceMan is required to return to active duty with the new rookie pilots to go up against the best of the best from whatever country, he only has one condition…

IceMan: I get to pick my own wingman.
TopGun Officer: You got someone in mind?
    IceMan: I know a guy…

  4. if tom cruise were to get mentor role, i hope the writer can come up with a very good story. perhaps like a very improved rocky 5. or how about as a very bad mentor like denzel washington in training day. i’d love to see tom cruise as a bad guy..

  5. They should try and make the sequel keep up to the original base story, time period etc. taking into consideration Cruise’s age and the role he will be playing. But I have to say, I would also like to see Val ‘Iceman’ Kilmer playing a role.

  6. hmmm these days it’s all “fire and forget”, dog fighting is a thing of the past… maybe set it slightly in the future, planes are pretty much almost fully automated, suddenly the US is at war with Russia and cyber terrorists have knocked out the US comms systems so that the auto pilot and targeting systems are rendered useless and pilots are forced to dog fight… what to do? cut to mountain cabin, maverick in a lumberjack beard chopping wood, a couple of gov guys talking him out of retirement “do it for your country”… yeah ok i’m bored :P

  7. Yeah I’d like to see another Top Gun but not if its as you say something cheezy plot that makes him a flight instructor, or god forbid they get some new guy to be his son.

Personally I think that for a Top Gun 2 to work it would almost require not having Cruise in it. In fact I’d go as far as to say that maybe they should just bring in a whole new generation of young pilots and make it all about the academy rather than trying to tie it back to Maverick.

    1. And Val Kilmer hasn’t been good (or bankable) in a long time.

I dont need these two again. But if there has to be a sequel it should be about the Top Gun flight school…. not the characters.
