I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… I will NEVER understand the fascination the American public has developed for watching people on TV sing karaoke. Seriously… what gives? Anyway… no matter how much I think it’s the embodiment of total cultural stupidity, there is no denying that impact and popularity of American Idol. It’s beyond huge and (sadly) shows no sign of slowing down. The only question left to the producers is “How can we make even more money off of this?”
Simon Cowell (the darth vader of American Idol judges) thinks he’s come up with a way… make a movie! But the film will not be called “American Idol”. No no no… that would be too easy. He’s going to call it “Star Struck”. But it basically is American Idol when you read what the good folks at ComingSoon have to report:
Struck” is set behind the scenes of a TV singing competition in the vein of “Idol” and the Cowell-produced British show “X-Factor” and follows 10 contestants trying to make it to the top. “The story is told through the eyes of those 10 contestants,” said Cowell, who will produce “Struck.” “We want it to be the musical version of ‘Rocky’ — an underdog story, a feel-good film.”
For authenticity, the leads in the film — playing participants in a TV singing competition — will be cast through nationwide open call auditions similar to those used on the reality shows. Cowell, who hopes to hold the calls early next year in seven or eight cities, believes casting unknowns for the leads is crucial. Just as he does as a judge on “Idol” and “X-Factor,” Cowell will be at the auditions for the movie. And just like a singing reality show, “Struck” will open with clips from the auditions.
Soooo basically it’s American Idol in every way, shape and form right down to the last detail, except it will have a different name, and be done on the big screen without people voting… but every other nuance (right down to showing the auditions) will be exactly the same. Why not just make “From Kelly to Justin 2” instead? It will probably succeed just as much.
Honestly… even if you’re a fan of American Idol… does this interest ANY of you at all? If so, what is the appeal?
