Mike Myers to Play Keith Moon

MikeMyers32.jpgI’ve always liked Mike Myers all the way back to his Saturday Night Live days. So I Married An Axe Murderer still sits in my top 25 all time favorite comedies, and his short appearance in Mystery Alaska as an old “Don Cherry” type hockey veteran commentator still puts me in stitches every time I see it.

So now it’s been announced that Mike Myers will take on a different kind of role. Myers is set to portray Keith Moon, drummer for The Who in an untitled project. The good folks over at CommingSoon give us this:

Moon’s penchant for destroying drum sets while bandmate Pete Townshend smashed his guitars helped to forge The Who’s rebellious image. Moon was just as wild offstage and the lunacy nearly overshadowed an instinctive power drumming skill that fueled The Who. The hard living caught up to Moon, who died in 1978.

The only other time Myers has even attempted a “dramatic” type role was in 54 when he played Steve Rubell. The results of that attempt were questionable. So the real question is: “Can Mike Myers be a successful dramatic style actor portraying a real life character”? I honestly don’t know… but I’m curious to see the attempt.

What do you think? Can Myers pull a role like this off?
