The Movie Blog: Uncut LIVE – Recorded July 21st 2008

Hey there guys. Here is the Live show that we recorded yesterday. As you can see we’re now doing things with LiveVideo.Com and we’re still working some bugs out. The green screen stage looks stupid as hell… but we’re only using that while they install new track curtaining in the studio sometime in the next 2 weeks.

Doing the show was a lot of fun and there is a LOT of Dark Knight chat. Check it out:

  1. Hey Eric,

For Sex and the City I was talking about opening weekend numbers. Pay attention next time to what the topic is.

For the death of Robin… opppss.. I accidentally named the wrong title. Sue me.

Since it was a topic brought up by a question on the board I didn’t “research it”. I’d like to see how many mistakes you make if you did a live show where you had to know everything off the top of your head.

The show is not, nor is it ever “researched”. It’s a conversation podcast, not a news show.

  2. Wow, I don’t think I’ve seen a podcast/videocast with so much misinformation in quite awhile. In your first few minutes, you guys manage to botch a dozen different movie facts. Do you bother doing any research at all, or do you just make this stuff up as you go along? FYI, “Sex and the City” has earned well over $150 million domestically, not $50 million as you state. And Robin (Jason Todd) did not die in “The Killing Joke”… nor was he killed with a pipe. He died in a storyline called “A Death in the Family” and he was ultimately killed by a bomb. He was beaten by the Joker with a pipe in that storyline, but this was not the cause of his death. As for the production budget of “The Dark Knight,” it is between $180-182 million. I’m surprised you didn’t know that. But at least you didn’t just make up a number. Given how far off base you were on most other topics, I suppose I should be impressed by that.

  3. I imagine they will bring The Joker back eventually but I will bet you anything that they will not include him in the next film.

I want Sean Penn as riddler in the next one.

  4. First of all, not a bad premiere.

But I really don’t like the inactivity of the whole thing.. I don’t know if that’s how Doug looks normally, but he looked really dead, uncomfortable and self-concious there. I don’t like the news anchor look as someone pointed out, so ‘in the studio’ look might work better.. Can you guys sit on the couch? Right now it looks a bit Larry King-ish, football commentators in studio-like. When I say football I mean soccer for you Americans.

    But that’s just one opinion.

  5. Oh, and I forgot to mention… concerning The Dark Knight I know neither of you liked the way that Two face ended up at the end of the movie, but I believe that to be an homage to Batman: Jekyll and Hyde.

  6. Ledger is easily replacable. He was hardly a great actor. There are many better actors who could deliver a top-notch performance as the Joker. His performance in The Dark Knight bring the phrases over the top and scenery chewing to new heights. But it was hardly a performance of great depth. Not a scene of the Joker goes by wtihout him pulling off some ADD gesture or quirk.

Most of what what was good about the Joker in TDK was WRITTEN IN THE SCRIPT. It was his actions. The Joker as Christopher Nolan and his brother wrote him will always act the same no matter who plays him.

Also, make-up and costumes contributed immensely to the look of the Joker. Really if any other actor had done it – would the Joker have looked any different? The Joker doesn’t even look like Ledger – I certainly wouldn’t have recognised him if I didn’t know it was him.

Depp (hello Fear and Loathing) could definitely sink his teeth into the role. And a part of me wants to see what sort of genius D-Day Lewis could bring to the role.

  7. I didnt like the news anchor look, either. I thought the lighting looked weird as well.

Aside for the cosmetic look the shows content was top notch…as always.

Hopfully chuck norris kicks a baby or something. He seemed very boring for the first run.

  8. “Nobody can play the part as well as Ledger did”

It’s funny. Back in ’89 the same thing was said about Nicholson.

Anyway, since I’m eh, the joker that brought it up, I stand by my question. If Nolan & co. want Joker in the third film, it will have to be recast. There’s no getting around it. It doesn’t have to be a major actor. It doesn’t have to be major screen time.

They recast Rachel Dawes, didn’t they? You can say “improvement” if you want, but don’t forget, folks, they *did* throw serious money at Katie Holmes before she turned it down because of other projects. A blessing in disguise? Perhaps so. But you can’t ignore it. Her part was recast.

In the previous franchise, three different actors played Batman; two different actors played Harvey Dent. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but if actors cannot repeat a part for whatever reason, the part could be up for grabs.

I hate to be the guy to piss on everyone’s parade here, but I’m going to throw this gauntlet down too. As good as Ledger was, part of his appeal is equal to that of Brandon Lee in The Crow. I know that’s a very unpopular statement to make but part of the Joker performance *included* the character coming out of a body bag.

Equally unpopular is that since “we know” The Joker is played by Ledger, and Ledger is so lost in the role if the late actor went uncredited you might never guess it was him…then yes, a recasting is possible. Aside from one cutaway scene, Ledger is never shown without Joker makeup.

And the new actor, regardless of who it is (and again, it is a hypothetical situation, since Joker may not even appear in the third film) can play the character slightly differently without missing a beat. One could reasonably assume Joker would incorporate a few of his traditional deadly tricks or come up with a mild re-invention to fight Batman and/or to get under his skin.

Do not misunderstand me > I think the late actor could get more push for accolades towards awards time. But if it came down between Ledger and, say…Eckhart? I’d give it to Eckhart, as a supporting actor. I also feel that there may be some future backlash regarding “the possible nomination” of Ledger, should it happen.

But while it is a tough choice, there was the promise that Joker would always be around in some form, personal or puppet-master, yes? So if they have to have the character…it can, and should be, re-cast.

  9. Have patience my friends and lets see where this goes. I’m sure John has thought this move through and while I have some big concerns myself right now, i’m just going to see how things pan out.

Certainly, the 20 mins of show that i could watch were great as usual.

A big shout out to SoulVideo if he’s reading. It is inconceivable to not have you around anymore sir. You became a big part of the whole package for me because you always made me feel so special when i called in. We’ll all miss you.

  10. Also, the homage to Killing Joke was also in the movie – the way the Joker told different stories about his background, tht’s what I’m guessing.

  11. Well, it was decent, the technical aspects and some have suggested the improvements (lightening, camera – add some zooming/panning – making it livelier for a lack of better word). The voices were audible and fine.

As a suggestion, maybe the background can have running wallpaper equivalent types of various movies that are being discussed.

For the inagural, the content was fine..hitting relevant movies and few discussions on upcomming material.

Need another question reader, someone more interesting. How about some California babe :)

    Anyways, a good start.

  12. I agree that the green screen stuff doesn’t work, but if that’s going to change then I can put up with it until you do. I’ve got to repeat what a couple of other people said though. SoulVideo was great, but he talked far too much on the show. I watch/listen to the show to hear John and Doug so I personally didn’t mind his absence too much.

  13. Hey, John. “Batman: Death in The Family” was the comic that Joker beat Robin to death with a crowbar in. But, I too thought that it was an homage to “Death in The Family” when the Joker had a crowbar to hit Batman with near the end.

Next comment is: You claim that it may be the best “comic book” film in your opinion. You say that it is between it and X2. However, Wanted is a “comic book” film and you definately like it better than The Dark Knight. Care to comment?

Another thing… I’ve seen the movie 3 times now at the theatre and that includes once at the IMAX and Batman def. has some type of device in his hand when he bends the barrel of the gun. So it wasn’t just a brute strength thing.

  14. Hey John, I listen to the podcast(audio version) at work mostly and download it on to my hard drive… Will there be a downloadable audio version that i won’t need to put onto my ipod? BTW Great show and everything looks and sounds fine. for the back drop of the green screen curtaining… you should just get a huge picture of Doug’s face w/ him smiling behind you guys…. that would be classic.

  15. Just one thing. Needs better lighting. Also “Chuck” should loosen up. Expect to improve next time. John and Doug were fantastic as always. Laughed quite a lot.

  16. I loved the show. Yes, the lighting needs to be fixed and you need to get rid of those backgrounds, but the picture was way better than the one at Now Live and it just seemed better to be over all.

As a side note, I loved soul video, but he talked way too much. The show is about John and Doug. Soul was good at interacting on the boards, but he just interrupted the “stars” of the show too much. Just my opinion.

  17. Lighting blows, and having the headshots without looking into camera is very distracting and off centering sucks. If you guys can fix those issues it will be watchable. Scrolling updates are retarded for people to view the show days later since some of us cannot cant the live show. I like the new look, but those issues are just too bad to ignore. Also having a wide view is better since we get to see your physical body language better, seeing Doug wider gives us a better idea of his reactions while he is talking. Hope this feedback helps cannot wait for the next one.

  18. Good show finally got to watch the whole thing, first version cut at 25 mins. “chuck norris” is John McCain isn’t he, Im sure he’ll improve, loosen up a bit.

Kinda liked the old look, you and Doug mics and all was quite nice, but I think if the lighting improves and doesn’t make it look like you’re speed racer and doug is the dark knight it will make a lot of difference.

Look forward to the next one.

  19. I can see themes in the Dark Knight, and certainly think it was great. But I wouldn’t call it the smartest written movie in the last decade.

@ Jubeel, with respect to you and Mr. Cogill – I would disagree that Dark Knight is a superior film to Old Country

  20. Can you guys not see the smarts in the dark knight? It’s the smartest written movie in the past decade. It’s so dense. I’m calling an Oscar Nom for best adapted screenplay.

  21. The video here is much clearer and the sound issues do not show up either.

Look forward to future installments. Does LiveVideo have the facilities for call ins?

  22. I can’t e-mail you guys anymore for some reason. Problem with my program, so I’ll give you my news bit here and check out this video after.

Over at comingson.net they have an article up about Lucas repurposing all 6 Star Wars episodes as 3D movies.

    Thought you’d like to know.

    Steven Carroll

  23. man, heath eldger deserves an oscar. after watching that insanely awesome preformance, i know he should. it’s a shame he died, were not likely to see that again, but great job!!!

  24. I have to disagree with you on the recasting of LEdger. Nobody can play the part as well as Ledger did. LEdger brought that perfromance; he came up with the voice, the mannerisms, etc. He said he wanted to do the voice like a ventriloquist dummy; different pitches, etc. This is LEdger’s role, he put his stamp on it. I believe somebody else can play the Joker, but it won’t be Ledger’s Joker. Crispin Glover looks like an evil dude, but i’m sorry, the guy cannot act. He just can’t. He has his extremes in performances (screaming, crying, etc.) That doesn’t mean he can act well. He isn’t on the same level as Ledger. How old is Glover? When was he ever nominated or given credit for a performance? Ledger defined the role. They will not recast him…that’s the fact.

  25. That image of the camera with the white tendril things is burnt in my mind. Please don’t use it too much.

Otherwise, I liked it. I’ll try and get in on the live questioning and stuff.

I’ve got another request to make though. The biggest and last comic book adaptation of the summer has arrived and most of us have seen it. So, as soon as Comic-Con buzz dies down, could you guys be sure to get talking about regular movies again? That would be a real refresher.

  26. John, Jason Todd’s death was in “Death in the Family,” not “Killing Joke.” That said, I too thought that was a homage (Joker using a crowbar, that is).

  27. i just tried again and it worked this time, seems like it was a problem at my end.

Sorry for the false alert, nice show as usual, but the background looks awkward indeed :)

  28. The new look, as most people have mentioned, did not work for me. There were of course techinical bugs that were annoying (I did not watch or listen to the video all the way through until this was updated).

I also did not “Chuck Norris.” He did not seem interested, nor did he care to communicate with you or the chatters. His voice also seems lifeless and uninteresting. I did not get a feeling of his true personality and that was one of the quirks of Soul Video. He had a personality, he was likable, he did communicate with you and the chatters.

The truth is, I miss the old format, as well as Soul Video. This new style is not even close to what nowlive brought you.

    Hopefully this will improve soon.

  29. In spite of the technical bugs, I thought the show was good. I will say that I did not really like the “news anchor” type look. I much preferred the “in the studio” look like Howard Stern. That really seemed to fit the type of show ya’ll do. I also think the chatboard should be expanded and enlarged so that chatting does not go so fast and I hope they give an option to call the show soon
