Christmas is a magical time that is best celebrated when spent with a loved one. Christmas movies have been spread across all genres but rom-coms have especially made their place within the bracket of Christmas movies to enjoy on a Christmas eve due to their feel-good energy and soothing storylines. Here are some on-brand rom-coms that you can enjoy over the holidays.
1. Love Actually (2003)
A Christmas rom-com with focus on more than one or two couples (or maybe eight) and it has a cast from your dreams? Richard Curtis understood the assignment back in 2003 when he came out with this masterpiece starring Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Keira Knightley, Liam Neeson, Alan Rickman among others. Love Actually revolves around love, Christmas and London, along with a whole lot of other things, making Christmas so much dreamier and romantic. Love Actually has, well, love, it has laughter, and it has those hurdles which makes everything all the more worth it in the end.
2. Love Hard (2021)
What if Die Hard and Love Actually had a baby? Well, it would be Love Hard. Starring Nina Dobrev and Jimmy O. Yang and based in L.A., it revolves around the story of a woman looking for love and her search leads her from a dating app to New York only to find out that her digital “true love match” isn’t what she expected. Catfished on Christmas? Sounds horrible, but this very bump in the road can lead to some magical moments under the mistletoe, so it’s safe to say that it’s all good in the end. Love Hard takes the saying “looks can be deceiving” and turns it into a hilariously romantic flick that you won’t be able to stop watching until the credits roll.
3. Falling for Christmas (2022)
Lindsay Lohan and her Christmas rom-com streak has gone very strong over the past couple of years and in Falling for Christmas, it’s about to get even more cozy and warm. Picture this: Getting engaged to your Instagram famous boyfriend on a ski trip, tripping from the proposal spot (a.k.a. a mountaintop), losing your memory and landing into the care of a handsome, wood-chopping, brooding man? Oh, and he’s a girl dad too? Extra candy cane points right there! Falling for Christmas is a romantic pit that you can gladly fall into with zero regrets, lots of laugh-out-loud moments and no amnesia. Guess it’s time to bust out that skiing gear, because apparently ski trips are memorable meet cutes.
4. Hotel for the Holidays (2022)
Imagine being a hotel manager who works on Christmas and has interactions with some of the finest men checking in for the holidays? Well, get ready to be envious of Georgia, whose love life is about to get tangled up like Christmas ornaments in a box. On one side is the handsome chef, Luke, who is also Georgia’s “good friend”, and on the other is a dashing European ex-prince who is equal parts etiquette and charm. Whose side would you pick? A fallen prince with dripping Euro charm or the dependable guy who’s always been Georgia’s rock since day one? Hotel for the Holidays has all the cheery and ooey gooey sweet vibes that OG rom-coms have.
5. The Holiday (2006)
Swapping places with a stranger for the holidays sounds dangerous, but when two women from different countries and lives decide to swap each other’s houses for Christmas, it’s the prelude to the best decision of their lives. They both meet someone special, make new connections and life finally starts to sound like a rom-com title track. Wait till you see what unravels from that point on. The Holiday is romantic, fun and hopeful all tied up perfectly with a red bow.
