Who Is the Best Black Actor? We Tried to Build the Mount Rushmore

There are certain debates that never really end. Best rapper. Best hooper. Best movie of all time. And then there’s this one: who is the best Black actor ever? On a recent episode of The New Blerd Order, I sat down with Vince and BadTye to try and answer that question the only way we know how. By arguing about it.

The challenge was simple on paper. Build a Mount Rushmore of Black actors. Four names. No safety picks. No dodging the hard decisions. Just your list and your reasoning. What we quickly realized, though, is that this conversation is way more complicated than just naming your favorites.

What Are We Really Measuring?

Because what are we really measuring? Is it talent? Is it impact? Is it consistency? Or is it that feeling you get when somebody shows up on screen and completely takes over a movie? That’s where things started to get interesting. Some picks felt automatic. There are certain names that carry so much weight that leaving them off almost feels disrespectful. But even then, once you start locking in spots, the pressure builds. Because every name you add means somebody else gets left off.

And that’s where the disagreements kicked in.

At one point, the conversation turned into a real debate about generations. Are we giving enough credit to the legends who paved the way? Or are newer actors bringing a level of versatility and range that changes the conversation entirely? There’s also the question of career arcs. Do you reward longevity, or do you prioritize peak performance?

And then there’s versatility.

We got into it over actors who can do everything. Drama, comedy, biopics, action. The kind of performers who don’t just stay in one lane but dominate across genres. That’s a strong argument in this conversation, because being the best is not just about one great role. It’s about showing you can do it all.

Impact vs. Pure Acting Skill

Still, not everybody values that the same way. Some of us leaned more toward cultural impact. The actors who shifted the industry, changed the perception of what Black leads could be, and opened doors. Others focused more on pure acting ability. The craft. The transformations. The performances that stick with you long after the credits roll. And of course, there were a few picks that had everyone looking at each other like, “Wait… you serious?” Those are always the best moments.

Why This Debate Never Really Ends

Because at the end of the day, this is not a conversation you can win. There’s no definitive answer. Just strong opinions, personal biases, and a lot of passion for the craft.  What we ended up with were three very different Mount Rushmores. Some overlap, some surprises, and a few choices that will probably have people in the comments ready to argue. Which is exactly how it should be. So now the question shifts to you.

Who is the best Black actor of all time?

And more importantly, who makes your four?
