Disney’s animated sequel Zootopia 2 has taken the lead in the 2025 box office race. The film earned an additional $26 million in its third weekend, pushing its domestic total to $259 million. At the same time, the movie continued to dominate overseas markets, adding $131 million for a total of $877.7 million abroad. More than $500 million of that foreign haul came from China alone. The result is a worldwide gross of $1.13 billion, putting Zootopia 2 ahead of the former leader Lilo & Stitch, which sits at $1.03 billion.
Domestic Performance
In the United States, Zootopia 2 showed strong staying power. After three weekends, the film added $26 million, a sign that audiences still want to see the city of anthropomorphic animals. The domestic total of $259 million reflects steady weekly growth. Compared with other releases, Zootopia 2 outperformed the horror sequel Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, which earned $19.5 million in its second weekend and now sits at $95.4 million domestically.
International Success
The international market proved even more lucrative for Zootopia 2. The film earned $131 million in its third overseas weekend, raising its foreign total to $877.7 million. China contributed over $500 million, showing the power of the Chinese market for Disney titles. This strong performance helped the film reach the $1.13 billion worldwide mark, a figure that suggests the final run could exceed $1.5 billion.
How Other Films Fared This Week
While Zootopia 2 surged ahead, other movies saw mixed results. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 dropped 70 percent in its second weekend but still managed $19.5 million, bringing its domestic total to $95.4 million. The family film Wicked for Good earned $8.55 million this week, raising its domestic total to $312.1 million and its worldwide total to $468 million.
Indian production Dhurandhar held fourth place with $7.9 million in its second week, edging out Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, which earned $2.38 million in fifth place. James L. Brooks’s dramedy Ella McCay opened at six with a disappointing $2.1 million, marking one of the lowest starts for a Disney title in recent memory. Horror remake Silent Night, Deadly Night also struggled, pulling in just $1.1 million despite decent reviews.
Re‑releases added flavor to the week’s lineup. Classic titles How the Grinch Stole Christmas and The Shining returned to theaters, landing in eighth and tenth place respectively.
The strong showing of Zootopia 2 underscores the power of Disney’s animated franchises and highlights the importance of the Chinese market for global box office success. As the film continues its run, industry watchers expect it to cement its place among the highest‑grossing releases of the decade.
