It is official! The holiday season is filmmakers’ favorite season to release crowd-pleasers they’ve been planning for all year long. These are the films that have captured the attention of both critics and audiences. Right from their conception, our eyes are on their release dates and it’s finally the time to unpack what’s been hiding behind the big screen. Here are the top 5 picks that are going to be among the most important releases from 2025.

Hamnet (December 5, 2025)

Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao is adapting Maggie O’Farrell’s best-selling novel Hamnet. The emotional rollercoaster is the tale about Shakespeare and his wife’s struggles after losing their child which brings him to write his play Hamlet. Starring Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal, and Joe Alwyn, we’ll be teleported into a tale that has been given less attention. The familial love and struggles of losing a child, Shakespeare’s journey of becoming a bard, and some insight into the life of Anne Hathaway who descended from a forest witch, are all the reasons you should watch it. Though the movie got a limited release on November 26, it will get a nationwide release on December 5.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (December 12, 2025)

Daniel Craig is returning as the beloved detective Benoit Blanc in his mystery series Knives Out. Written and directed by Rian Johnson, this third installment will feature Blanc in his most dangerous mission yet. This time an unfortunate catholic priest gets murdered and leaves a trail of suspects. We’re expecting sharp-witted humor and typical Rian Johnson twists from this new movie. The trailer seems to hint that this upcoming sequel will be the darkest one yet. It also has a star-studded cast, including Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church, to keep us completely occupied for almost 2.5 hours. It also got itself a selected theatrical release on November 26, but will be released on Netflix on December 12.

Avatar: Fire and Ash (December 19, 2025)

We’ll be entering one of the most wondrous and well-crafted imaginary realms of all time, known as Pandora, once again! The biggest movie franchise among those that have had billion-dollar box-office collections, Avatar is returning with another fantastic sequel. James Cameron has directed the movie and written the screenplay along with Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, and Shane Salerno. This time, the adventure will be centered around a fire tribe known as the ‘Ash people’ with new species and biomes. The tribe is also known as the Na’vi tribe who will be joining hands with Jake’s enemies, which may result in a devastating battle.

The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants (December 19, 2025)

Added to this list is the perfect animated movie to enjoy this Christmas; the fourth installment of The SpongeBob Movie “Search for Square Pants”. Tom Kenny will, as usual, voice the iconic SpongeBob, who is on another fun yet dangerous quest. To impress Mr. Krabs with his courage, he will be diving into the deepest depths of the ocean to confront the mythical Flying Dutchman. Stephen Hillenburg directs the new movie after 5 years since the release of the last movie. With the success of movies like Zootopia 2, SpongeBob is most likely to win everyone’s hearts at the box office.

The Housemaid (December 19, 2025)

Based on Freida McFadden’s best-selling psychological thriller, Paul Feig is bringing this chilling narrative to the screen. Starring a stellar cast including Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, and Brandon Sklenar in lead roles, the movie is already winning the hearts of critics who have watched the movie. It follows Millie Calloway, who takes on a job as a live-in maid to a healthy couple, only to find out there’s something sinister she’s unaware of. Millie also has a past of her own which is haunting her side-by-side. The trailer delivers all the lingering mystery one needs to anticipate one of the last mystery movies of 2025 will be serving us with!
