Written by Uday Chopra, produced by Aditya Chopra, and directed by Shiv Rawail, this Yash Raj Films’ Spy Universe action-thriller was released theatrically on July 3, 2026. It features Anil Kapoor as the parallel male protagonist opposite Alia and Sharvari, and Bobby Deol as the lead antagonist.
Story Overview: Once You Go “Alpha”, You Can’t Go Back!

Time To Go “Alpha”! Starring Alia Bhatt (Right) as Sita and Sharvari Wagh (Left) as her twin sister Durga
The story begins in the aftermath of the Kargil War. Colonel Fateh Singh Lakhawat (Bobby Deol), with support from Lieutenant Colonel Vikrant Kaul (Anil Kapoor), initiates a covert super-soldier program titled “Alpha”. The program comprised an injectable serum called the “Alpha serum”, which was intended to convert Indian Army soldiers into invincible superhumans.
Colonel Lakhawat’s Alpha program failed miserably as the soldiers he had injected with the serum suddenly succumbed to brain haemorrhage. Meanwhile, Kaul, whose wife was struggling with pregnancy as well as congenital heart disease, had injected her with the serum so that she would be in good health while giving birth to their child. To his horror, Kaul now knew that his wife would meet the same fate as the Alpha serum-injected soldiers. She died during childbirth.
Featuring The Two Badass “Alpha” Girls: Alia Bhatt as Sita and Sharvari Wagh as Durga!

As the girl child was born, Lakhawat tried to take her away from Kaul, saying that the Alpha serum now runs in her veins and she belongs to the Indian government. However, unknown to Lakhawat, Kaul’s wife had given birth to twin girls. The one Lakhawat took with him to his lab facility was named Sita (Alia Bhatt), and the other, who stayed with Kaul, was named Durga (Shavari Wagh).
Sita was raised by Lakhawat to become an assassin with superhuman abilities. But as she learns that Lakhawat wants to kill her to obtain the Alpha serum from her brain to create more superhuman soldiers for another sinister and deadly program that would put India in danger, she teams up with her long-separated superhuman sister Durga and her real father Kaul to end Lakhawat’s evil intentions once and for all!

The Good:

Introducing Bobby Deol as Pakistani infiltrator Zarrar Khan, who was disguised as Colonel Fateh Singh Lakhawat in India
Alia Bhatt has fired up the screens with her high-octane, powerful action coupled with a carefree and bold attitude in Alpha. She is a complete “one-woman army”, ready to destroy hordes of bad guys. Her role demanded intense physicality, and she effortlessly matched it despite her fragile frame.
Initially, Alia’s highly trained assassin character appeared to be the villain of this story, as she was raised by a traitor named Fateh Singh Lakhawat, who was actually a Pakistani terrorist disguised within the Indian army. The screenplay has surprising twists and revelations as Alia Bhatt teams up with her on-screen super sister, Sharvari Wagh to take on this traitor who had raised her. Although Sharvari appeared comparatively weaker than Alia, they both teamed up pretty good in this well-executed female-led violent and energetic action drama. To be honest, Sharvari’s role was merely obligatory, and she was more like Alia’s sister-companion than a solo warrior. One of Alia’s highly impactful dialogues from this movie was “Ab Sita Lanka khud jalayegi”, meaning “Now Goddess Sita will burn Lanka herself”.

And I have to say, the twists in this super-soldier tale are jaw-dropping! At first, I was like, okay, at least Bobby Deol’s villainous character is a patriot who is trying to equip our army with invincible super-soldiers. But I was taken aback when his true intentions were revealed. He was indeed a patriot, but not of India, but of Pakistan! Again, the same India-Pakistan conflict story. But this one’s unique for sure. The screenplay is gripping. I was unable to leave my seat until the very end owing to the thrilling instances that unfolded and the exciting, raw, and bloody action sequences, comprising skillful hand-to-hand combat and advanced weaponry, which consumed the major part of the screenplay.
She’s Got The Fire: Alia and Sharvari Go “Alpha”!

The events, although impractical, are tense and fast-paced. Before watching this spy-actioner, I had heard rumors that the screenplay of Alpha is sloppy and confusing. But it’s not so. In fact, you have to watch this movie very attentively to grasp every instance within its screenplay. Once you are able to grasp all unfolding incidents, the story becomes clear as daylight. The film has a continuous flow and does not fluctuate. So, there remains no space for confusion.
The visuals are gritty with dark, shadow-heavy frames and rain-soaked shots to raise their intensity. The film has been shot stylishly with a high-kicking and weapon-discharging action choreography.

Besides Alia and Sharvari, Bobby Deol as the lead antagonist and Anil Kapoor as the heroic fatherly figure and resolute RAW officer have given equally powerful performances, with espousing dialogue deliveries. While Anil Kapoor’s character relied more on brain than brawn, Bobby Deol’s rogue commander character was immensely sturdy and mighty. During the climax, at some point, I had the feeling that Bobby too was injected with the Alpha serum. Being a normal human, the way he manhandled Alia’s superhuman character in their ending fight scene was indeed astonishing.
To those who are saying that “There’s no story in Alpha”, I would suggest them to watch this movie again. And this time very attentively. Upon doing so, you would find it an engaging one comprising heart-touching family emotions, alarming suspense, and fierce action. A complete feast for action-thriller lovers!
Brace Yourselves For The “Massacre” With Alia and Sharvari!
The Bad:

Presenting Anil Kapoor as Sita and Durga’s father and RAW chief, Vikrant Kaul
Songs form a decorative aspect in Hindi cinema. Without music, Hindi movies look bald. That’s where Alpha fails. In the effort to create an aura of feminine machismo, the makers failed to concentrate on creating appealing music for this film. None of the musical tracks is delightful enough to remember after leaving the cinema hall. You would probably forget them after they have played.
Fact is, there’s no romantic hero in this female-led YRF Spy Universe film. It’s only two young girls against an aged villain. So, there remains no scope for some melodious romantic tracks. Even in a scene, Sharvari tries to joke with Alia regarding her love life. To that, Alia’s blank reaction gave away everything. “Who wants to love when it’s time to kill?!”
I also feel the cameo of Hrithik Roshan as the legendary YRF Spy Universe’s Major Kabir Dhaliwal was absolutely unnecessary. And his fight sequence was funny as well. He appeared dressed as a monk, initially telling the two girls, “There was a time when I used to be energetic and fearsome like you”. I burst out laughing when, in the next instance, there was an attack in his monastery, and he immediately shed his monk’s clothes to reveal his soldier attire, ready for a fight. What was he doing there, disguised as a monk with his soldier’s attire beneath? And that too, lying to the girls, “Once upon a time, I used to be like you, but now I am a peaceful monk!” He was no real monk, just pretending to be. This instance was literally amusing as well as unconvincing.

Moreover, I also have a personal concern regarding Alpha. It showed a Pakistani rogue infiltrator who was disguised as an Indian Army commander for decades! Dhurandhar just destroyed Pakistan, but is Alpha trying to act as its antidote?
The Verdict: An Underrated Master-Blaster!
Now for some fun facts! Whether it’s a coincidence or was pre-planned, you would be amazed to learn that not only has Alia Bhatt played the character named Sita in Alpha, but her husband Ranbir Kapoor is all set to star as Lord Ram in the mega-epic Ramayana, which will be released by the end of 2026. So, was this a strategic move by the Bollywood industry to highlight and promote this couple? Maybe! Due to nepotism, star kids are reigning the film industry nowadays!
I also feel pity for Bobby Deol, who has transformed into a dreaded Bollywood antagonist after aging. I still remember the days he was the heartthrob of every woman and used to be a very handsome romantic action hero back during the 90s and early 2000s. Now, the poor guy is taking severe bashings from both Alia and Ranbir. He featured as the main antagonist named Abrar Haque in the 2023 action-thriller Animal, where he took beatings from Ranbir. Now, in 2026, he took severe beatings as antagonist Lakhawat from Ranbir’s wife, Alia. I mean, what on earth? Do Ranbir and Alia have some personal grudges against Bobby, such that whatever movies they do, they make him their punching bag? Anyways, jokes apart!
Behind the Scenes of “Alpha”: Two Deadly Girls, Built To Kill!

I am surprised to see the number of negative reactions Alpha is receiving. Because of the fast-paced incidents within the screenplay, many are unable to keep up with it. Due to this, the film has drastically underperformed and may flop at the Box Office. Unfortunately, Bollywood happens to be highly male-dominant. That’s why this film might have been underrated by the Indian audiences, as they may find it hard to accept a female-led action drama. I also feel that as Shiv Rawail is a debutant director, with time, he would gain the necessary experience to execute his movies as per audience preferences.
Whatever may be the case, Alpha is a must-watch for you! This would have been a masterpiece had the general public understood its screenplay. And if you are unable to grasp the story after watching it once, I would suggest you watch it again! Trust me, this action-packed thriller is worth your time and money!

Overall
Alpha (2026): A highly underrated masterpiece entertainer filled with raw action and thrill!
Bobby Deol goes rogue once again after Animal. But this time, he doesn’t face Ranbir Kapoor; instead, it’s Ranbir’s wife, Alia Bhatt! And sorry for the spoilers, guys! They were necessary, as many have not understood this movie at all.
Of course, the story is predictable as evil always has its gruesome end. But the suspense that converts into unexpected revelations, coupled with heavy action, builds the thrill.
Pros
Suspenseful screenplay blended with unexpected twists
Raw hand-to-hand combat, gunfights, and bloodbath add to the excitement
Powerful performances and espousing dialogue deliveries from the lead cast
Spectacular and stylish cinematography
Cons
Unappealing songs
Hrithik Roshan’s sudden, amusing, and unconvincing cameo appearance
Underrated by the Indian audiences due to its fast-paced screenplay, which they may find confusing, and also might be because this is a female-led film.
