Apple Original Films has officially unveiled the trailer for Mayday, an upcoming action-comedy that promises a genre-bending take on the classic spy thriller. The film is set to premiere globally on Apple TV on September 4, 2026.
The story follows Lieutenant Troy Assassin Kelly, played by Ryan Reynolds, a hot-shot U.S. Navy pilot whose top-secret mission into Russian territory during the height of the Cold War goes wrong. Stranded behind enemy lines, he is discovered by Nikolai Ustinov, a gruff ex-KGB agent portrayed by Kenneth Branagh. The two form an unexpected alliance that serves as the heart of the film.
Directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who also wrote and produced the project, described the film as an ode to the buddy movies of the 1980s. They noted that the film aims to blend humor, danger, and genuine heart while exploring themes of patriotism and humanity through the unlikely pairing of its two leads.
A Cold War Buddy Comedy
The film is produced by Skydance Media and Maximum Effort. In addition to the lead stars, the cast includes Marcin Dorocinski, Maria Bakalova, and David Morse. The production team features a heavy roster of industry veterans, including David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger from Skydance, alongside Ashley Fox and Johnny Pariseau from Maximum Effort.
You can watch the official Mayday trailer on YouTube to get a first look at the action and chemistry between the two leads. Additional promotional materials, including key art and film stills, are available on the official Apple TV press site.
With the release date approaching, Mayday looks to continue Apple’s push into high-profile feature films. The project arrives as the streamer continues to build its library of original content following the success of previous titles like F1 and CODA.
