Return to the Caves in 4K
Horror fans looking to revisit the claustrophobic terror of The Descent: Part 2 have a new reason to head back underground. Lionsgate has announced that the 2009 sequel will be available on 4K Ultra HD for the first time in the United States on August 11. The release features a limited edition Steelbook design by artist Matt Ryan Robin.
Directed by Jon Harris, the film picks up immediately after the events of the original movie. Sarah Carter, played by Shauna MacDonald, is found dazed and alone after escaping the Appalachian cave system. She is soon forced back into the darkness to assist a rescue team, only to discover that the subterranean threat is far more dangerous than previously imagined.
A New Look at the Horror
This 4K release includes a Dolby Vision presentation and English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. Beyond the technical upgrades, the package comes loaded with both new and legacy special features. New additions include a feature titled Flashback on The Descent: Part 2, which highlights insights from cast members Shauna MacDonald and Krysten Cummings.
The disc also carries over a wealth of legacy content, including an audio commentary track featuring Harris alongside MacDonald, Cummings, and Anna Skellern. Other included materials are a making-of featurette, deleted scenes, and various production galleries. For those interested in the technical specifications or pre-order details, you can find more information on the official Lionsgate website.
The release serves as a solid opportunity for collectors to upgrade their horror libraries. While the original film is often cited as a modern classic of the genre, the sequel offers a direct continuation of the intense, creature-driven survival story that defined the franchise.
