Sean Penn is moving behind the camera for his next project. The actor and filmmaker is set to write and direct an untitled drama centered on a police officer involved in the events of January 6th at the Capitol Building. The film is currently in development at Warner Bros.
Penn will also produce the film alongside John Ira Palmer and John Wildermuth under their Projected Picture Works banner. While the project is based on the real-life experiences of a police officer, the identity of the subject remains under wraps. Reports indicate that the story focuses on the subject’s early journey and is framed as a story about friendship rather than a traditional political film.
Bradley Cooper is currently in talks to star in the lead role. If the deal moves forward, production is expected to begin in mid-2027. This timeline accounts for Cooper’s upcoming commitments, including his work on the Ocean’s Eleven prequel, where he is slated to write, direct, and star.
A New Direction for Penn and Cooper
This collaboration marks a significant new venture for both Sean Penn and Bradley Cooper. Penn, who recently earned an Oscar for his work in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, continues to balance his acting career with his directorial efforts. For Cooper, the potential role adds to a busy slate of projects as he expands his involvement in both acting and behind-the-scenes production.
The project is notable for its focus on a singular, personal narrative within a larger historical event. By centering the story on the officer’s personal journey, the filmmakers aim to explore themes of heroism and friendship that extend beyond the immediate context of the Capitol attack.
